Post Pirates 4 vs. Cars 2 vs. Kung Fu Panda 2
I think it is a general consensus among most that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II will rule summer 2011 at the box-office.

However there are four other very high-profile sequels hitting movie theatres next summer which all have two things in common: they are all three in 3D and they are all aimed at family audiences.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens on May 20th, the weekend before Memorial Day. It is preceded by two other 3D films (Thor and priest), both also to be released in May. Pirates' predecessor took in $309,420,425 at the box-office, but had rather mediocre WoM (though not as bad as Shrek the Third's). The DVD sales were rather enormous as it sold around 14,500,000 DVDs since its release.

Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom opens six days later, also in 3D and facing another 3D opener - The Hangover 2! Until How to Train Your Dragon Kung Fu Panda was the best-received and most successful Dreamworks Animation film outside of the Shrek series. The first one made $215,434,591 two years ago despite facing WALL-E from its fourth weekend on. It wasn't absolutely huge on DVD, though, selling around 9,000,000 copies to date.

Cars 2 is an interesting case. Many woud try to argue that Cars was Pixar's worst-received film. In fact, however, there are few signs that point to that. It made $244,082,982 back in 2006, passing an opening-to-total multiplier of 4. It ended up becoming #3 of 2006 and the merchandise sales for it were probably the best for any animated film last decade. You can still see tons of Cars merchandise everywhere. It is said that Disney made over $1+ billion from that alone. Moreover, it is one of the biggest DVD bestsellers ever, having sold around 15,400,000 DVDs to date! The WoM among kids is most certainly terrific and with Pixar's history of delivering high-quality sequels when they try to do any, there's reason to believe that the sequel will be well-liked too. Of course Cars 2 will see a 3D/IMAX release (on June 24th next year)

Now I believe that all these three films have a solid shot at $300+ million. Cars 2 & Kung Fu Panda 2 are coming off very well-liked predecessors and Pirates as a franchise is simply huge, even with the predecessor that wasn't that well-received. I don't really see it pulling a Shrek Forever After on us. At the moment I see all three landing in the $300-350 million territory with KLung Fu Panda 2 seeming the most likely one to somewhat underwhelm, in my opinion (due to way smaller DVD sales and thanks to being stuck among so many 3D releases).

Right now I'm going to give a slight edge to Cars 2 thanks to Pixar's history of success.

1. Cars 2 - $325-330 million
2. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - $320 million
3. Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom - $310 million

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - $250-300m
2. Cars 2 - $250-280m
3. Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom - $220-265m

NASCAR fans will most likely get Cars2 to top 300m.

I say Pirates 4 will be bigger. I like the direction they are taking this time. They got rid of what didn't work anymore (Bloom, Knightley, Verbinski who got clearly tired of all this), kept the best things (Depp, Rush), added new fresh talent (Marshall, Cruz, McShane) and new angles to the story (Blackbeard and Jack's old love interest). And this time the movie has a solid ground in the form of an acclaimed novel.
I don't think Pirates 3 being an underperformer will cause too much trouble also. It wasn't that well-received, sure, but wasn't a franchise killer like Shrek 3 or Spider-Man 3. It didn't turn people away from the series.
And I think Cars will be the lowest grosser of those three.

Pirates.

The two animated films are being over-predicted.

Pirates with $300-$330m.

Cars and Panda with $240-$280m. Should be atleast $30m between the two.

Also true.

CGI films tend to be overpredicted these days just because of 3D+inflation when they aren't much different from normal flicks. Well, these are sequels actually...

And, yes, I know I'm guilty of overpredicting.

Pirates: 105/305
Cars: 82/300
KFP: 120 5-day / 285

All three of them will probably drop from their predecessors admissions-wise.

Kung Fu Panda is an international film, so it could very well be at Ice Age 3 levels on that side. I also think it has $350 m + potential domestically and $1 billion internationally. I see POTC 3 slightly underperforming which will help Kung Fu Panda. It also has a month to itself and room to show legs.

There has also been a significant drop in popularity of Nascar since Cars/Taladega Nights' release. Cars 2 will still be huge. But Cars 1 really didn't have much competiton until its 4th weekend with Superman. Cars 2 on the otherhand has Transformers 3 in its second weekend. Toy cars and toy robots have alot of audience overlap, and imo Cars will have a larger drop in its second weekend. Still looks good for $300 m though.

The last POTC film dropped nearly 1/3 in admissions between #2 and #3. Audiences weren't asking for another POTC movie yet, though wom wasn't at Shrek 3 levels. I think they could have waited another year or two. It still has $300 m potential because of inflation/3D, but the other two films are bigger.

I see the 3 movies making big numbers, all them will be in 3d

- Pirates 4 360m

- Cars 2 315m (this one could surprise and increase as hell, Toy Story 3 reputation could help it, if critics are ok and better than the last film will be great news for pixar)

- Kung Fu Panda 2 260m (this will perform better overseas)

I think rise of the apes is not a huge competitor for cars 2, green lantern and transformers 3 are,,,,,

kung fu panda will also have a difficult run against week 2 of pirates 4 and x-men first class, hangover 2 is not a direct competitor because it goes to different audiences

now all three films have showed their first teaser trailers, by the end of the year (in December) we could get at least the first officials trailers of each one, I still think Pirates would be first, followed by Cars 2 and ending with Kung Fu Panda 2 (domestic)

BJs Predictions:

Pirates4 - 105m| 355m / 3.3 (another substantial drop in ticket sales for the franchise)

Panda2 - 102m | 350m / 3.45 (about 5m more tickets sold with 3D premium)

Cars2 - 89m | 335m / 3.8 ( lowest 3D taking of the 3 films and around a 2m-5m ticket sales loss from the first film, I expect a 50/50 spit between 2D and 3D.)

Well, I thought this is pretty much the same just with one film less....it is about how all three perform against each other anyway.

If I go personally then I would love Pirates to top this. If I see the record from last year than Cars2 should top this. KFP2 is most definitely not going to increase cause Dreamworks has a tough challenge of making a good sequel.

Cars 2 - 325m
Pirates - 310m
KFP2 - 280m (because of inflation and 3D)

Kung Fu Panda 2 - $345 million
Cars 2 - $270 million
Pirates 4 - $240 million

Shrek went from $267 million to Shrek 2's $423 million. Kung Fu Panda's gonna be huge. Cars 2 has a lot of younger appeal, but not as much adult. It will still be one of Pixar's top grossing movies.

Even though it was 2007, it still doesn't feel like a long time since the last Pirates. This one looks like more of the same.

Offended your comic book heroes did I?

Thor looks like crap. CA still has a chance of not being crap.
