Encouraging openings, it's definately doing much better in Europe than pics like X-Men so is a the upper echelons in comic-dom overseas.

Although it was beaten by Fast & Furious in some markets like Spain, it wasn't by much and it's going to be interesting to see who has the better legs.

Great opening though as I said before Thor has opened in 56 markets and will face F5 next in most of those markets...after that week some markets will have Pirates in previews....so I guess it might see a harsh decline in holdover markets.

HR has more numbers, from Asia.

==

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/i ... hor-183952

Director Kenneth Branagh's interpretation of a Stan Lee comic book about an otherworldly renegade warrior defending planet Earth opened at No. 1 in the U.K. and Ireland ($9 million from 500 situations over five days), in France ($8.1 million from 579 locales), South Korea ($5.7 million from 513 spots), Italy ($5.5 million from 455 locations) and Spain ($5 million from 377 situations).

Thor also recorded first-place openings in several smaller markets, including Taiwan ($2.1 million from 58 sites for a per-screen average of $36,206), Singapore and the Philippines. In Vietnam, the opener yielded $308,000 from 19 sites, which Paramount said was a three-day debut record for the market.

So far, Thor has tallied an overall foreign gross of $93 million. The Marvel Entertainment outing opened last round in Australia, where this time it drew a second-weekend tally of $3.3 million from 226 locations, a 42% from the opener, hoisting the Down Under cume to $13.1 million.

Universal's Fast Five, which like Thor opened overseas last weekend (in the U.K., Australia, South Korea and New Zealand), drew $45.3 million this time from 3,211 playdates in 14 territories, running up its early foreign gross total to $81.4 million.

Fast Five ranked No. 2 on the weekend overseas; in the U.S. and Canada it opened at No. 1 on the weekend. Worldwide, the fifth sequel in the turbocharged car action franchise has grossed $128.9 million.

The action title starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and Paul Walker grabbed No. 1 slots in each of its 10 new overseas markets, with Russia leading the pack with $11.5 million drawn from 712 sites. Other No. 1 debuts included Germany ($10.2 million from 633 spots), Austria ($1.4 million from 82 situations) and Turkey ($900,000 from 175 venues, Universal's biggest opening weekend in the market ever).

The biggest Fast Five holdover was Australia, where it commanded the No. 1 slot with $4.7 million from 230 sites, off 41% from the opening round. Down Under cume stands at 20.9 million. Thor is set to open in Finland and China by next weekend, while Fast Five will open in 45 markets this week, including France, Italy, Brazil and Mexico.

==========================

Thor dropped 42% in Australia compared to Fast5's 41%. Obviously running pretty much neck and neck; though you have to keep in mind that Fast 5 had a 5-Day opening last week in Australia, so the overall drop is actually bigger, let's see how they thin out next week when it'll be a true level playing field, hardly any new notable releases.

Thasts right Arch. It also was holidays the week before last week so the holds are even better than they appear.

No, i'm sure there's been bigger openings. I don't have any comparisons to go by on the spot at the momment but i'm pretty sure its the case.

That HR report is wrong about Spain's Thor placement in the first paragraph. It opened in second position after Fast Five, not first.

Thor opened in second place here in Holland, behind Rio's second weekend (which surged up 55% from a muted opening)

1 2 RIO, WB(FOX) €374.346 [203/1.844] +55,1 €952.425
2 - THOR, UPI €366.114 [84/4.358] €431.827
3 1 GOOISCHE VROUWEN, IF €272.238 [130/2.094] -35,0 €12.530.434
4 4 SCREAM 4, eOne €80.584 [90/895] -48,0 €633.942
5 3 WORLD INVASION: BATTLE LOS A, SPR €76.271 [57/1.338] -56,7 €321.839
6 5 LIMITLESS, AFD €70.916 [67/1.058] -37,3 €843.665
7 - LINCOLN LAWYER;THE, eOne €66.818 [43/1.553] €99.410
8 6 JUST GO WITH IT, SPR €65.646 [66/994] -33,5 €731.626
9 7 ALLE TIJD, IF €48.559 [96/505] -30,2 €405.812
10 15 WINNIE DE POEH (NL), WDS €38.410 [101/380] +134,2 €102.410

I have no idea how that compares to the opening weekends of other comic book movies, since the information beyond the top 50 is sorely lacking. I know Iron Man 2 opened to a much better €525.009 last year.

Totals are easier to find though.

THE DARK KNIGHT €4.962.020
SPIDER MAN €4.207.552
SPIDER-MAN 3 €3.138.413
SPIDER-MAN 2 €2.403.560
X-MEN €2.349.210
X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE €1.893.693
IRON MAN 2 €1.784.523
X-MEN 2 €1.738.795
X-MEN: THE LAST STAND €1.538.080
IRON MAN €1.342.683
BATMAN BEGINS €1.195.055
FANTASTIC FOUR €1.011.810

I think Thor is going to end up in the lower end of that, especially with Fast Five opening this weekend. Fast & Furious made €2.681.470, better than most comic book movies perform here.

I don't get why local crap like Gooische Vrouwen makes so much money (#10 all time) while clearly superior movies make so much less.

THAILAND - Opening Weekend

Opened in 2nd place behind local Ladda Land. The opneing itself was quite dissapointing in a market which has delivered some pretty good grosses for comic book movies.

Iron Man 2 - $2,157,852 (253)

It's a good opening in my opinion. I don't think many people here expected an OW over 1m. It really overperformed on the weekend. It's Friday to Saturday increase was +66% and it increased 6% Sat. to Sun. Its 5-day looks even better since the opening Monday was a holiday. 5 day total is about 1.35-1.4m.

LOL. Sex & Zen's box office run has been nothing short of bizarre and awesome at the same time. Biggest OD ever, weekend collapse. Amazing opening Monday (non-holiday). 2nd weekend holiday (Easter) collapse (-56.4%). 3rd weekend holiday surprise (-46%).

Just a few more days it will pass The Incredible Hulk Worldwide. It's doing well enough to get a sequel, that's all I care about.

I really enjoyed Thor, so yeah. I actually don't want The Avengers movie happening now. Obviously The Avengers will have a big way on continuing the current Thor story and I don't know how Thor sequel and TA will mix considering different directors, writers, etc...

Thor dropping better than Fast5 and is now just $100k behind on weekend....from a gap that was $3m on opening weekend.

Thor looks set to do X-Men origins type numbers in Australia which is quite good around the $20m range.

The PTA for Thor kind of blows in Australia, Archangel. :P

Fast & Furious blows past Thor's 2 weekend total in its opening weekend here in Holland... I'm also disappointed that Thor decreased while Rio and the local Gooische Vrouwen improved over last weekend. I guess there was some kind of mother's day effect (Gooische Vrouwen is like a Dutch Desperate Housewives, based on a TV show of the same name) that Thor couldn't take advantage of. That and the direct competition from F&F kind of killed it.

1 - 1 FAST & FURIOUS 5, UPI [100/€10.339] €1.033.969 N/A €1.078.039
2 1 3 RIO, WB(FOX) [196/€2.406] €471.656 +26,0% €2.074.209
3 3 9 GOOISCHE VROUWEN, IF [128/€2.609] €334.019 +22,7% €13.176.439
4 2 2 THOR, UPI [84/€2.805] €235.651 -35,6% €881.624
5 - 1 WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, WB(FOX) [66/€1.459] 96.335 N/A €106.565

I expect it to end up in the lower end for superhero genre, middle of the pack at most. Not that great for a genre that isn't all that hot to begin with in Holland.

Post Re: COMICS 2011 (INTL.) - THOR
Thor was unable to claim the #1 spot in its 3rd weekend, beaten quite handily by Water For Elephants.

It did however have a great hold, better than Fast Five and it's about certain that it'll hit $20m which is superb. The good reviews is obviously generating into good legs as well.

Hong Kong

Disregarding the first 5 days, Thor has only been able to muster less than half of what it did in its first five days.

Really poor legs here and it barely crossed a 2 multiplier thanks to 2 different holidays. Regardless, the total itself is respectable and should be considered a success.

Can't believe it's opening this weekend, how time flies. X-Men First Class takes over from Thor in this thread.

In Australia, there's some select advance previews on Wednesday. I'll definately be seeing it this weekend. Can't wait, the reviews so far are superb (personally haven't read them but have been reading snippets and hearing a lot of good things). The 100% on RT counts for something :funny:
