Premise: Charles Portis' novel is about a 14-year-old girl who, along with an aging U.S. marshal and another lawman, tracks her father's killer in hostile Indian territory. While the original film was a showcase for John Wayne, the Coens' version will tell the tale from the girl's point of view. The original starred Kim Darby as the teen, Wayne and Glen Campbell as the lawmen, Jeff Corey as the killer and featured Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper as fellow outlaws.

The Coens' latest feature will hit the theatres this December, clearly aiming to become another Oscars hopeful. The Coens have never been big figures at the box-office, but I think their past three films put them more in the spotlight than ever before.

No Country for Old Men won them the Best Picture/Director/Screenplay Oscars and went on to become their biggest film by far with $74,283,625.

Coming off NCFOM Burn After Reading had a small break-out in 2008 as well, making $60,355,347 and becoming the Coens' 2nd-biggest film.

Last year's A Serious Man gave them their third Best Picture nomination. It wasn't very successful, grossing only $9,228,768 at the box-office. However, however, it never played in more than 262 theatres.


True Grit looks like a far more commercial project, starring Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and last year's Oscar winner Jeff Bridges. Also, while the western genre hasn't been big in a while, it certainly does appeal to niché audiences. Back in 2008, Appaloosa grossed $20.2 million despite a not very strong cast and absolutely no Oscar buzz. A year earlier 3:10 to Yuma made $53.6 million before becoming a big hit on DVD.

I think that with right marketing and if it is as good as one would expect from the Coens, it'll easily top Appaloosa and has a solid shot at $50+ million.

My only question now is why is it opening on a Saturday? I mean I have never heard of a movie opening on a Saturday in wide release Christmas or not.

Movies tend to open on Christmas. So whatever day that falls on is when they open most of them.

Holy crap this thing looks AMAZING! I have never gotten this excited for a western until now. Hell I don't even like westerns that much.

Having seen the long trailer...yeah, I agree, 3:10 to Yuma is going down. Not sure about making as much as NCFOM, though.

I doubt it matters that much for this film, but it has been rated PG-13.

...average BO seems to be about $35 million.

Unforgiven's number could only be possible if it were a serious contender to win BP which most likely won't be the case, even if the film is very good.


Anything above $50 million is a splendid number for a western nowadays, though.

This movie is already having a MUCH! better run than most people expected so far. It will already be at $50M by today or Wednesday and that $100M+ barrier will come down at no time.

Still hard to believe that we had a §170+ million grossing full-blown western! And it also made $250 million worldwide! I mean 3:10 to Yuma and Open Range were considered success stories and those didn' even break $80 million worldwide...

I don't think we'll see a repeat like this in the western genre in the next ten years.

The success of this movie should definitely be attributed to Coen Brothers, I think without them this movie would have done about $120m or so...which would have been good in itself.

I was actually about to put that but then decided to go higher, the legs were exceptional and the movie did have good Awards season...even though the wins weren't that impressive.

Well, what I basically meant was a full-blown western like True Grit. If they make Lone Ranger like Sherlock Holmes (or like Wild Wild West - but better), I wouldn't really count that.

Cowboy and Aliens should definitely be considered in cowboy genre even if they have used technology with Aliens.
