Higher Opening: Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 vs. Diary 1
Seems like we haven't had a sequel vs. poll in awhile.
Tween trends are hard to predict. Usually a hit film for the demo will not have quite as successful of a sequel overall, and even openings decrease, but usually this is more true of films targeted for the entire family, where this is something that middle-schoolers can sort of claim for their own.
It seems this property has stayed fairly relevant with the current book series still running strong, but it doesn't seem much like Twilight in its ability to branch out to more demos and non-book fans. Even Harry Potter has not managed that from the first film.
My guess is it'll just miss, but like Thunder said I just cannot decide yet which way this is going. I'm a terrible judge of what kids that age are into since I'm not really ever around them.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

I agree that the gap really shouldn't be too long for a franchise in this demo - after a year the risk is that the kids will move on and not care about it anymore. They were wise to release on the same week as well.

I too think it's best to release it not long after before the people who loved the first become too old to care. I'm wondering how many new fans it has gained since DVD. I didn't see it until DVD and I liked it a lot. I'd be interested in checking the second out in theaters.

Looks like the sequel beat the original in OW numbers, though with inflation, the adjusted numbers might be on par or a little low from the original
