Post subject: | Re: HK 3/8: John Carter, #1? Sunday Upd., ASL well out in fr
WOW for A Simple Life but even moreso John Carter. This weekend hasn't been the most straightforward of weeks. Here's the breakdown of the entire weekend: - John Carter opened on Thursday, in 2nd place behind The Iron Lady but doubles The Iron Lady in gross thanks to a ratio of 20 (gross:admissions). It is unknown if the admissions or actuals are at fault here but I'm leaning strongly towards actuals. Admissions seem to be line with the amount of business John Carter is doing. Also, 3D/IMAX movies usually only do a ratio of about 8-9, sometimes 10, but never as high as 20. - A Simple Life debuted to a strong number on Friday and its opening day results are still unknown at the moment. - A Simple Life is being highly boosted by the morning shows thanks to seniors going to watch this. One report said that their showing was 50% seniors. Ticket prices for seniors in the morning are a scant $10-15 each ($1-2 US). It could have a very big impact on its weekend. - John Carter lagged behind The Iron Lady even more on Friday. It only rose 4% with A Simple Life opening. - John Carter saw a 110% spike on Saturday. It is unknown if this was a correction for Friday or if more people really wanted to see this on the weekend. - On Sunday, John Carter's pre-sales have shot up more than the pre-sales it started with on Saturday. Sunday's pre-sales, while bizarre, can be somewhat explained. It got 2 screens on Sunday, up from 1 on Friday. - A Simple Life rose another 10% on Sunday's pre-selling admissions due to big early morning showing pre-sales. It is possible that A Simple Life and John Carter are both overestimated. If the John Carter ratio stays in the same range, it does have a chance of #1 but I've never seen a film lose to another film while doubling its admissions before and ratios that high never stay in the same range. I'm giving John Carter 15-20% chance of #1 and a 3% chance of a weekend over 1m. |

Post subject: | Re: HK 3/8: A Simple Life 3-day roasts John Carter, Iron Lad
Excellent number for A Simple Life. It's always a good sign when a movie with over 50k admissions Saturday increases on Sunday. That is dumbfounding for John Carter. That number makes up for the poor Thursday/Friday admissions. The Iron Lady has been doing steady all week. It might not be as big as A Simple Life or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde like John Carter but it had a very good weekend. Hugo fumbled. Love is Not Blind had a horrible drop.
Fantastic 3-day opening for A Simple Life. Some comparisons: it is behind Rise of the Planet of the Apes' opening weekend but leads all 2012 openers with the most number of admissions on opening weekend. It's better than Journey 2's opening weekend admissions but a little behind its 3-day Lunar New Year holiday admissions. Magnificent Sunday pulled John Carter ahead of The Iron Lady in admissions. The Iron Lady had a good opening. Hugo cracked.
Now, I want to turn the attention from this weekend to The Hunger Games' opening weekend. For those that believe The Hunger Games has a great shot at the top 5, I think you'll be pretty surprised when you see these statistics that counters your beliefs. There's a 3-year streak running with each of the top 5 being released with 4 or less movies on its opening weekend. No movie since 2008 has managed a top 5 showing while opening with 5 other releases. You'd have to go back to 2007 on the Sept. 27 holiday weekend where Lust, Caution topped the weekend with 1.4m while up against 6 other releases. Should one of the March 22 films move, only Kung Fu Panda in 2008 did it against 4 other movies. If you don't believe in trends or statistics, then maybe you'll like to read about The Hunger Games' competition after the March 22 weekend. March 29 will see at least 2 fairly big pictures in Wrath of the Titans and Love in the Buff (local film, sequel). The Grey, newly added, will hurt and steal screens (however small they may be) away from The Hunger Games. Afterward, Titanic comes out on April 4 and we get a slew of Easter releases on April 5. Last Easter, Hong Kong had 11 releases. I'm sure in the next couple of weeks, more titles will get added to the April 5 date. Let's just say that competition is definitely not in The Hunger Games' favour at the moment. I'd definitely like to hear what you guys are thinking, so flame away. |

Weekend actuals for top 3 1. A Simple Life - $1,073,756 2. John Carter - $916,495 3. The Iron Lady - $350,614 The top 2 actually increased. Fantastic for both. The Iron Lady held at its own pace which is also good. Top 3 combined for 2.3m. |

More about the March 8 weekend, A Simple Life's opening day was about $244,915. It's going to come down to actuals to see which of A Simple Life or Journey 2 takes this year's biggest OW so far. Thursday schedules
With Nightfall being an EDKO film, Broadway and AMC are putting this on 2 screens at most locations. A Simple Life gets regulated to the 2nd biggest screen while John Carter and The Iron Lady round it out with the smallest screens. It seems like Nightfall will be a pretty big deal. I think it's going ultra wide but not completely sure. March 15 Weekend Predictions 1. Nightfall - $750,000 2. A Simple Life - $700,000 (-35%) 3. John Carter - $400,000 (-56%) 4. The Iron Lady - $185,000 (-47%) 5. Love Strikes - $150,000 I think this weekend will come down to two things: how much people want to see Nightfall and whether strong WOM will lead A Simple Life to a spectacular hold. This weekend might come down to the wire if Nightfall does reasonably well and A Simple Life takes advantage of its WOM. Broadway/AMC is hoping Nightfall wins but MCL are backing A Simple Life, giving it 2 screens at most theaters. It'll be interesting to see which movie UA backs but I think they're going for A Simple Life over Nightfall. They're also promoting Love Strikes on their website so Nightfall does seem to have some setbacks. A Simple Life also has the benefit of having a 4-day 2nd weekend vs. a 3-day opening weekend. In any case, this should be a mildly eventful weekend after an exceptional weekend last week. John Carter opened to a good result last week but too much firepower this weekend with the Nightfall/A Simple Life duo will lead to screen/showtime loss. IMAX will be there for another week and there are no other action releases around to challenge it so it might slip by with a good drop. WOM seems to be mixed, however, and this isn't exactly known as an action film that people have to see. The Hunger Games/Wrath of the Titans are up soon and its proximity to those films might take away from its 2nd weekend. The Iron Lady had a fairly nice opening but there is some concern with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy opening that it will steal showtimes away in the business/arthouse district. In other places, they'll be supporting either Nightfall or A Simple Life but generally, this type of movie is not as affected as other types of releases. Love Strikes looks to go wide with UA as its main supplier of screens so it should end up in the top 5 by default with no other alternatives. |

UA theaters Thursday schedules
UA is promoting A Simple Life over Nightfall. A Simple Life is either getting the biggest screens or 2 screens at night while Nightfall gets the 2nd biggest. John Carter didn't survive as well at UA as it did at Broadway. The Iron Lady is still getting full day showtimes at most UA/Broadway theaters. Nightfall is doing better at Broadway/AMC at night on Thursday while A Simple Life is doing better than Nightfall at other theater chains and at Broadway/AMC locations in the morning. John Carter hasn't looked good at most theaters and The Iron Lady is doing ok with pre-selling. |

Post subject: | Re: HK 3/15: 2012 and all-time records updated; ASL v. Night |
All 2012 as well as all-time records have been updated. Note that those numbers for A Simple Life and John Carter are subject to change pending finals. Updated March 15 Weekend Predictions 1. A Simple Life - $750,000 (-30%) 2. Nightfall - $675,000 3. John Carter - $400,000 (-56%) 4. The Iron Lady - $185,000 (-47%) 5. Love Strikes - $135,000 A Simple Life is doing great judging from pre-sales so far. It is beating Nightfall at most Broadway locations at night and in the morning. It is way out in front at UA theaters and outselling Nightfall 2:1 with night shows. Nightfall will probably have better walk-ins than A Simple Life but I think it will be slightly frontloaded on Thursday. A Simple Life will take advantage of Saturday/Sunday and fill its showtimes to capacity. It should take another victory lap this weekend. |

Honourable mention - Don't Go Breaking My Heart This smoocher opened with a good $430,312 (including previews -- $365,308 without), however, it was the next weekend that really turned heads. It dipped a scant 5% and was only $10,000 away from repeating on top. That weekend allowed it to become the biggest local romance film of the year and it ended with great legs, finishing with a multiplier over 4. 7. Fast Five Released: May 5 OW - $533,559 Total - $1,823,664 (3.42 multiplier) Opening on the 2nd unofficial weekend of summer, this heist flick set new records in the franchise. Departing from the first 4 films' theme of street racing, Fast Five evolved into a crime action thriller and it paid off dividends at the Hong Kong Box Office. It opened on top, beating Thor's 2nd weekend and beat 3/4 previous installments in the franchise with just its opening weekend. The last film would not hold on for very long as Fast Five took advantage of the Tuesday holiday on its 1st week and it became the new franchise leader in gross in an astonishing 5 days. In admissions, Fast Five started off well on Thursday with 12,031 admissions and jumped 21% on Friday. Weekend brought about no changes as Thor led with pre-selling but Fast Five zoomed ahead taking all 4 days. It raced up 83% on Saturday and declined 14% on Sunday with a weekend total of 76,064 admissions, taking the trophy by more than 22,000 admissions. In its 2nd weekend, it achieved a drop that no other movie in the franchise has done ever. It slid 29%, becoming the first film in the series to decrease less than 50% in its 2nd weekend. It also became the first film to spend a 2nd weekend in pole position by winning out over challengers such as Priest and The Detective 2. By the end of its 2nd weekend, it had already doubled Fast & Furious's total, the 2nd highest grossing film in the franchise. 3rd weekend would be its defining moment with the 4th Pirates movie taking over. While Pirates 4 dominated theaters, Fast Five had a decent hold, dropping only 57% to post the 2nd best hold for any wide release that weekend. By this time, its total had already reached an unbelievable 1.5m. With no major releases out on its 4th weekend, Fast Five took advantage and once again folded less than 50%. Its soft 46% decline left it with 1.736m after 25 days, already outgrossing the rest of the Fast & Furious series combined. There would be no pit-stops for Fast Five in its 5th weekend as the X-Men: First Class and Hangover 2 duo targeted its audience and it paid for it dearly with an 80% nosedive. Its total moved up to 1.789m. 6th weekend saw another male-driven release out, Super 8 was released and it took another hit. It blew 51% but it passed 1.8m during this time. 7th weekend was no help either for Fast Five as Green Lantern entered. It sawed off another 52% leaving it with only $4,000 for the weekend. No movies targeted its demographic on its 8th weekend but the combination of no new releases geared towards its demo and the impending release of Transformers pushed forth an excellent hold. It slowed down 1% from its 7th weekend and ended its Hong Kong run with $1,823,664. It not only defeated The Fast & Furious series by a huge margin but it was the only film in the franchise to achieve more than 3 multiplier. It also became the longest running film of the series, playing for 8 weeks. Its May box office was spectacular, enjoying a good opening to having some legs with its great 2nd and good 3rd and 4th weekend holds. It was a hit in a sea of a middling box office wasteland and successfully deflected doubts that the movie was just an aging franchise looking for a quick buck. ___________________________________________________ No real changes to the top 2 although Nightfall seems to be coming back. It is still behind A Simple Life at most theaters. |

Nice for A Simple Life. Just OK for Nightfall. I think John Carter fell about 50% from last Thursday. Incredibly bad for The Iron Lady. Weak for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. |

Very nice weekend for A Simple Life. Great PTA for it as well. Good for John Carter. Looks like people were in the mood for an action movie. The Iron Lady also did solid business. Huge dive for Hugo. It'll end with about $640,000. Love snuck into the top 5, edging out 3 releases. It'll pull in another $20,000 before exiting theaters. Ghost Rider 2 flamed out. It'll finish with about $490,000. Love is Not Blind couldn't hold well. It'll make it to $275,000. The Artist also lost a lot of customers. That drop ends its chances of $500,000 but it will still make more than $400,000. The Devil Inside had a relatively good drop by horror standards and should do about $225,000. A Separation had the only good drop of this session. It could still make $150,000.
Nightfall overtook A Simple Life sometime in the evening hours. It also extended the gap in the late hours due to midnight sessions. Pretty good for Nightfall. It is tinkering with $750,000 this weekend. Very good for A Simple Life. I'm sure that if you combine today's and Friday's admissions for it, it will be more than opening day admissions. Will have to wait and see with actuals for John Carter's drop but it looked like it fell about 50-60%. Iron Lady had a weak hold. Pretty awful for Love Strikes. _______________________________________________________________ The Hunger Games has just started pre-selling tickets for Thursday-Sunday at select locations. Ticket sales have looked good considering showtimes released for advanced booking came out sometime this evening. I will continue to monitor and update this throughout the weekend. |

Opening week for the top 3 from last weekend 1. A Simple Life - $1,528,385 2. John Carter - $1,226,491 3. The Iron Lady - $438,777 A Simple Life made a whopping $450,000 from the 3 weekdays. John Carter reeled in $300,000 and The Iron Lady took in $85,000. Great for the top 2. |

If A Simple Life is to overtake Nightfall this weekend, it will have to win by a fairly big margin in admissions over Saturday and Sunday. So far, it is looking like it will do just that. Good start to the weekend. A Simple Life should widen in the afternoon before Nightfall comes back at night. Looks like John Carter and The Iron Lady are heading toward 60% drops this weekend. Good for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. |

Post subject: | Re: HK 3/15: WKD Projections; Hunger Games Upd.; Wrath IMAX
Nightfall closed the gap slightly in the afternoon but did most of the damage at night. Great for Nightfall. Good hold for A Simple Life but it petered out in the evening/night showtimes. OK hold for John Carter. The Iron Lady won't have a great drop this week but it is holding better as the weekend progresses. Love Strikes continues to be really poor.
It looks like Nightfall will take this weekend but not by much. A Simple Life will have a very good hold this weekend and 3m is up for grabs. 2.5m is definitely happening. John Carter won't be destroyed this weekend and it'll be enough to go past 2m. The Iron Lady is aiming for a $700,000 finish. The Hunger Games is showing different levels of pre-selling. It hasn't registered that much at a couple of locations while others have showtimes that are 25% full already. I'm a little surprised that all locations haven't started pre-selling for this. It seems like this won't be very huge. Wrath of the Titans in IMAX is already having showtimes put out for early purchase. Sales haven't been good but it's only been a couple of days. Will update as we get closer to its release date. Love in the Buff is getting special screenings next weekend (Saturday and Sunday) ahead of its March 29 release. |

Early Pre-selling opening weekend sales for The Hunger Games
About 3.5 days out, The Hunger Games is looking pretty good. It will probably get 2 screens this weekend at most places. Sunday right now is a bit slow but that should change very quickly. At other UA locations, this has been selling at a fairly fast pace. One theater has showtimes that are more than 60% full already. |

Broadway schedules for Thursday
I'm not really surprised that The Hunger Games only got 1 screen at Broadway. Nightfall is their film and after the scheduling for A Simple Life last week, I thought that something would happen. What those schedules don't tell you is that The Hunger Games is getting the 2nd biggest screen at most places. Some Broadway theaters have put this on the smallest screen behind Nightfall and A Simple Life. I still have high confidence, however, that it will take the biggest opening weekend of 2012 away from Journey 2. Nightfall didn't even blink. It still has a nice set of showtimes on Thursday but I expect UA and other theater chains to slash its showtimes to make room for The Hunger Games and other new releases this week. A Simple Life did OK. It lost the 9 PM showtime at most places but still kept the 7 PM. Morning showtimes are still doing good business so theaters have kept it on the 2nd biggest screen in the morning. John Carter and The Iron Lady will have to make room for the new releases. They should see more than 50% of their showtimes from last week disappear. It is pretty much a tossup between the other new releases in terms of showtimes. We'll have to see how the other theater chains book the new releases this week. |

Yep. It also shows how it still has a lot of work to do OS. Just because it is catching fire (no pun intended) in the US/Canada doesn't mean everywhere else will be exactly the same. |

Yeah Twilight movies are not as great in China and Japan but they are still very well known in other OS markets and it is very difficult to get love stories to be liked in Asian markets. The Hunger Games will have to depend on WOM and maybe the sequels with catch fire in Asian markets. The movies do have some action and opening huge in states is always a plus in OS markets. Also from what I read the books were famous over Europe. |

Also from what I read the books were famous over Europe. You Are the Apple of My Eye says hi. Love stories can explode if made and marketed correctly. Last year alone, love stories did very good in HK. Apple, Don't Go Breaking My Heart, Beastly all did above expectations. That doesn't even include some others like Love Is Not The Answer. Twilight failing in China/Japan has more to do with vampires than the romance subplot. The best The Hunger Games can hope for is North America exploding and then Asia comes back next weekend with a solid hold. Other than that though, they have to hope that Catching Fire breaks out. You missed the word "difficult" while reading I guess, I never said impossible. I wasn't particularly talking about HK when I said that but yes You Are the Apple of My Eye did really well almost everywhere it was released. There are so many home grown romance movies out there in most of the Asian markets that liking foreign love stories is difficult. I think I should have added foreign love stories there |
