I don't know. One of the sites is wrong but which one is it?

10 | Pee Mak Phra Khanong | 3,636 | 937 | -74.2% | -28.5% |
Powerful for Now You See Me. Good for World War Z's opening day. It wasn't enough to beat Battleship/Sherlock Holmes 2/Fast & Furious 6's opening Wednesday night shows but that's a good number. Zombies aren't that popular in HK though The Walking Dead might be starting to turn public opinion of it. Early reviews are coming in hot with lots of good scores posted. Awful for Hangover 3, After Earth and Switch. Good hold for So Young. Not good for American Dreams in China. Very good for Miracle in Cell No. 7. Woah for Fast & Furious 6. Blech for Pee Mak Phra Khanong.
| Daily admissions (OW) | | | | | |
| Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday | Total |
Fast & Furious 6 | 11,537 | 21,137 | 23,621 | 41,162 | 41,206 | 138,663 |
World War Z | 9,704 | | | | | 9,704 |
Gap | -1,833 | -22,970 | -46,591 | -87,753 | -128,959 | |
I thought it might be interesting to compare World War Z with Fast & Furious 6. World War Z will lose to Fast & Furious 6 in admissions but it could end up being much closer than general expectations. Monsters University preview

Very good for World War Z. Good hold for Now You See Me but it will fall harder today. Hangover 3 didn't get overrun by World War Z. HK: Forbidden Super Hero previews place in the top 5. Great hold for American Dreams in China. Really bad for After Earth. OK for To the Wonder. Switch is a failure for Andy Lau. Blind Detective is out in 2 weeks. That one should do better. Pretty good for Fast & Furious 6 and The Great Gatsby.

Re: HK 6/19 WED: NYSM #1; WWZ solid; MoS 6/27; Monsters U 7/
A couple of sellouts were reported for World War Z this morning. 3 PM: World War Z is BLOWING UP. It has broken through 20,000 admissions. Might have to re-think Man of Steel's OW next week.

Some news to report:
Richard Linklater's Before trilogy got some sneak previews and sold out within 30 minutes.
World War Z update
It's going to pass 30,000 admissions today. It'll probably end with 33,000 admissions.
Man of Steel update
This is inching closer toward 60% capacity in IMAX.

Re: HK 6/20 THU: WWZ runs over everyone; Typhoon approaches
A tropical storm is edging toward HK. Signal No. 3 has already been raised. Strong winds and heavy rain are expected for the weekend. It's unlikely that Signal No. 8 will be put up but there's always a chance if the storm takes a sudden turn north. Admissions will be affected. In what way I am not sure. Typhoons always gives me headaches.

Freaking insane for World War Z. This breakout is brought to you by Brad Pitt's Chanel commercial. There is a wide range where World War Z can finish opening weekend due to the typhoon. I have put it down for anywhere between 1.8-2.4m. What a great hold for Now You See Me. World War Z owns the stage and Now You See Me survives anyway. 2m will be broken this weekend and 3m is locked. Both movies having superb opening weekends is not good news for Man of Steel. Hangover 3 dropped off with World War Z on the map but it will get to 1.5m even if it has to crawl there when Man of Steel opens. It'll end as a slight disappointment for failing to meet Hangover 2's total. Fast & Furious 6 had a pretty good hold. It'll get to 3.1m. Total disaster for Switch. This is doing worse than Future X-Cops. It will be Andy Lau's lowest grossing feature in HK. Pee Mak Phra Khanong is still doing well. It will get to $10m HK. After Earth fell off the face of the Earth in rapid fashion. This clunker won't get to 1.5m. Another very good hold for American Dreams in China. Amazing WOM for Miracle in Cell No. 7 has sparked its 2nd weekend, easing just 4%. It will pass at least $150,000. So Young is not grabbing Hong Kong audiences. This Mainland hit will not make it to $200,000.

The Brad Pitt Chanel ad is great. Everytime I go to Kowloon Bay I see his face.

Phenomenal for World War Z. Now You See Me is looking great too. Theaters have been placing them on 3/4/5 screens altogether. The rest of the films weren't so lucky. Hangover 3 had a very weak increase. Huge decrease for American Dreams in China. Wonderful for Miracle in Cell No. 7. Not good for So Young. After Earth is dying quicky. Awful for Badges of Fury. Not bad for To the Wonder. The Great Gatsby keeps on fighting.

The Fast and Furious series is not as popular in HK as South East Asia and WWZ is a disaster film. Other disaster flicks like 2012 have done well but I thought that zombies would hurt World War Z. 6 PM: World War Z is going to finish around 61,000 admissions today. Now You See Me is pushing for 27.5-28k.

Very strong for World War Z. It will be the 2nd highest OW of the year with 2.1-2.2m. Now You See Me also played very well with general audiences. Pretty bad for Hangover 3. Good for American Dreams in China. Extremely good for Miracle in Cell No. 7. After Earth collapsed hard. Fast & Furious 6 dove hard but will get to 3.1m by Wednesday. So Young is not pulling people in. WOM is also lukewarm at best. Badges of Fury is being ignored by audiences but those that have shown up are giving it great WOM. The Great Gatsby is holding OK. 12. Pee Mak Phra Khanong - 679 ( -72.9%) 13. Switch - 674 ( -86.0%) Switch and Pee Mak Phra Khanong both decreased from Friday admissions and saw To the Wonder pass by them on Saturday. Pee Mak Phra Khanong's best day was on Thursday and have seen its weekly drops spiral out of control going from -40% on Thursday to -57% on Friday to now -73% on Saturday. It needs to stabilize or it might just miss 10m HK.

Killer admissions for World War Z. Now You See Me did great. Hangover 3 got pushed aside by the top 2. Although #4-#11 were spread out in admissions, in gross it was a lot closer. Less than $20,000 separated all 8 films from each other. Very good hold for American Dreams in China. Exceptional for Miracle in Cell No. 7. After Earth was teared apart by negative reaction and competition. Not good for Badges of Fury.

Re: HK 6/20: WWZ demolishes all, #2 OW of 2013; Man of Steel
June 20 Weekend Actuals
1. World War Z - $2,207,350 (opening weekend actual) 2. Now You See Me - $2,393,016 3. The Hangover 3 - $1,496,924 4. American Dreams in China - $585,360 Miracle in Cell No. 7 - $123,776 Fast & Furious 6 - $3,094,417 After Earth - $1,393,777 Switch - $247,553 Pee Mak Phra Khanong - $1,273,868
To the Wonder - $15,472 (opening weekend actual) Ernest & Celestine - $11,217 (opening weekend actual)
World War Z increased from estimates. Great for Now You See Me. Hangover 3 will pass 1.5m today. American Dreams in China keeps chugging along. Miracle in Cell No. 7/Fast & Furious 6/After Earth are really close in gross this week, less than $1,000 between them, therefore, I have removed their placements. Terrible for Switch. Pee Mak Phra Khanong needs only $15,000 or so for 10m HK. It'll get there.

Awful numbers for Man of Steel. Even The Amazing Spider-Man had much better pre-sales. Oh, and those 4's and 14's you see in the seats sold section means that they have actually sold 0 tickets for that showtime. They block off a set of seats for all houses and bigger houses have more seats that aren't available for purchase. I'll check back on Man of Steel's pre-sales on Wednesday.

Re: HK 6/20: WWZ demolishes all, #2 OW of 2013; Man of Steel
Man of Steel's advanced ticketing release pattern is so strange. MCL released pre-selling 2 weeks ago like any other blockbuster. Broadway/AMC started pre-selling 4 days ago and UA started pre-selling for Man of Steel the usual way for movies, 2 days in advance.

It's OK for Man of Steel but I think most industry watchers expected more showings. Most theaters have put Man of Steel on 3 screens with a few outliers giving 4 at night. Pre-sales have not been good at all. It should recover enough to snatch the #2 OW of 2013 away from World War Z. Epic begins Hollywood's animation block this summer. Theaters don't seem enthused by it and viewers are waiting for Monsters University to come out. Big mistake by FOX to release it against Man of Steel. They should have forgone the summer release strategy and put it up earlier. Now it has to deal with Man of Steel opening weekend, Despicable Me 2 next weekend and Monsters University the week after. There won't be time to create legs with direct competition and blockbusters towering over it. Pre-sales have looked bad. Badges of Fury has been showing everyday since last Friday at most locations but some theaters have opted not to show it after its weekend sneaks. Weekend previews were not reported so it looks like they want to roll the previews into opening weekend to make the number look better. Holdovers crumbled under the weight of Superman. Those near the bottom of last week's top 10 have been effectively crushed by the openers and superb holdovers in World War Z and Now You See Me. World War Z is getting 1 screen at most places and will be trying for 1m again this week. Now You See Me has been left on 1 screen due to its great opening and 2nd weekend. Thursday schedules

2 | World War Z | $800,000 | -63.8% |

Quote: The summer's other big superhero tentpole is let out the last weekend of June in hopes of attracting the now free students on their holiday break. Already premiering in many territories around the world, Man of Steel was shelved for 2 weeks to accommodate the student population and not interfere with the exam period. Subsequently, Man of Steel now finds itself shackled and in a precarious position. Now You See Me and World War Z both erupted the last couple of weeks with Now You See Me snaring the 4th highest opening of 2013 while World War Z decimated the box office and stole the 2nd biggest opening of 2013. It's very unlikely that there will be 3 breakout films in a row and something will have to give. Still, Man of Steel is just too big of a film for many to pass up. Will Man of Steel crush Iron Man 3?

I've taken a brief look at Man of Steel's pre-sales at a few locations. Very disappointing ticket sales overall. 2D is doing better than 3D but viewers will be forced to watch 3D once 2D gets full.

2013 Records updated. | Thursday adm. | (so far) | | June 27 |
Rank | Movie | LW | TW | % chg |
1 | Man of Steel | -- | 12,350 | -- |
2 | World War Z | 9,504 | 3,876 | -59.2% |
3 | Epic | -- | 2,256 | -- |
4 | Now You See Me | 2,719 | 1,624 | -40.3% |
5 | Badges of Fury | -- | 251 | -- |
6 | Faust | -- | 101 | -- |
7 | American Dreams in China | 394 | 89 | -77.4% |
8 | Miracle in Cell No. 7 | 172 | 84 | -51.2% |
9 | The Hangover 3 | 760 | 72 | -90.5% |
10 | So Young | 216 | 68 | -68.5% |
Trainwreck for Man of Steel but walk-ins could help it recover. I'm not going to say it's a flop until I see final numbers. Looks like World War Z and Now You See Me had a hand in muting Man of Steel's admissions. Also, the dark tone of the movie did not help. World War Z held OK. Most films will drop heavier with finals. Epic isn't doing so great. It had better Thursday pre-sales than Rio but worse than The Smurfs. Despicable Me 2 will cut into its increase this weekend so there will be no chance of a 100-200% increase on Saturday. Now You See Me held well but it will fall harder once the day is finished. Terrible for Badges of Fury. One worthy note: Miracle in Cell No. 7 had a good hold. How does Man of Steel's opening day pre-sales compare to other blockbusters?
Movie | OD adm. | % diff |
Man of Steel | 12,350 | |
Iron Man 3 | 46,074 | -73.2% |
Iron Man 2 | 31,977 | -61.4% |
The Dark Knight Rises | 38,750 | -68.1% |
The Amazing Spider-Man | 32,580 | -62.1% |
The Avengers | 47,317 | -73.9% |
Transformers 3 | 44,161 | -72.0% |
Harry Potter 7-2 | 62,089 | -80.1% |
Toy Story 3 | 32,294 | -61.8% |
Pirates 4 | 21,559 | -42.7% |
Shrek 3 | 49,634 | -75.1% |
The Hobbit | 18,440 | -33.0% |
Mission Impossible 4 | 24,390 | -49.4% |
Painful. -73% from Iron Man 3, -74% from The Avengers and -62% from the much beleaguered The Amazing Spider-Man OD pre-sales. It didn't even beat Mission Impossible 4 or The Hobbit's OD pre-sales and that disappointed as well.
