Strong from Now You See Me 2. It was one of only 2 films in the top 5 to decrease by less than 10% from the Thursday holiday while the 3 other films dipped by more than 20%. Warcraft had a really poor Saturday increase, the 2nd worst of the top 10. Even strong reviews are not generating much interest outside the niche market. Very good hold for Angry Birds. Excellent increase for The Conjuring 2. It also eased just 2% from Thursday's admissions. It is shaping up to be one of the best horror openings in recent memory.

Bad for Warcraft. Yikes for Now You See Me 2. Very strong once again for Angry Birds. Solid increase for The Jungle Book. Very good increase for The Conjuring. Horror films typically see a decrease with Sunday pre-sales so to increase at all is really good.

Post Re: HK 6/9 THU: NYSM2 absconds with #1 after close battle
Independence Day 2 is looking like a huge disaster in the making with very slow 3D ticket sales at most locations. It is doing worse than Star Wars 7 did at its weaker theaters. Lower ticket prices will keep this below 3m OW for sure.

I think it will pick up eventually but early pre-sales are not encouraging.

OW prediction: 2.3m

There's a chance that it might miss 2m if ticket sales do not materialize. I also wonder if theaters will switch over to 2D this weekend?

Even worse news for Independence Day 2 is that it will shockingly lose IMAX showtimes to The Legend of Tarzan the following week.

Not a very strong start for Independence Day 2. It has begun with less than double the admissions of Star Wars 7's opening Thursday pre-sales. It has a user rating of 4.4/5 from moviegoers this morning. Poor for Alice. Not that bad for Now You See Me 2. Decent enough for The Conjuring 2. Awful for Warcraft.

Much better for Independence Day 2. It bested X-Men: Apocalypse's OD admissions by 13.2% but Apocalypse had additional surcharges that Independence Day 2 did not get. Its opening day score from users is still at a 4.4/5. Not good for Alice 2. Now You See Me 2 looks OK. Fantastic for The Conjuring 2. It already passed 1m and the original's total last week and it could be looking at a 1.3-1.5m finish. Kidnap Ding Ding Don edged out Warcraft for #5. Kidnap Ding Ding Don has resonated with early viewers and has spawned a 4.5/5 rating from opening day moviegoers. Warcraft had a terrible hold and it will leave theaters soon.

Updated as of June 23, 2016.

2012 falls out of the top 50 with X-Men: Apocalypse entering.

Captain America 3 is $1.5m HK away from Titanic but it won't pass Titanic for #3 all time. Zootopia finishes its run with an incredible $51.8m HK although it will certainly fall out of the top 40 by the end of this summer. X-Men: Apocalypse is less than $1.5m HK away from Days of Future Past and it will take some leggy results for Apocalypse to surpass DOFP's total. It looks like it will finish less than $1m HK away from DOFP's total.

Avatar is still #1 in HK, wow. Thought will all the inflation and overall progress of the market it would have been surpassed by now.

Don't see Apocalypse getting ahead of DOFP but it will very close in the end. Decent total for Zootopia. Pretty shit legs in face of competition for CA3.

Avatar was a monster in HK. Its total probably won't be passed in the next 5 years with the exception of Avatar 2. Avengers 2 couldn't even come within 5m of Avatar. I don't see Avengers 3 cracking 20m even if it raises its IMAX prices to Star Wars 7 levels.

Zootopia had a great total despite facing Batman v Superman on opening weekend. Captain America 3's legs were super disappointing especially since the May holiday was counted into its opening weekend.

Independence Day 2 came very close to doubling its pre-sales. Alice 2 had a weak hold. Now You See Me 2 seems to be fading. Very good hold for The Conjuring 2. Kidnap Ding Ding Don and Warcraft finished with the exact same gap as Thursday.

Decent for Independence Day 2. Disappointing increase for Alice 2. Now You See Me 2 had a nice increase. The Conjuring 2 had an OK increase but another solid hold week to week. Angry Birds had a big increase.

5Angry Birds$125,000$1,900,000
These are ballpark figures for the top 5.

Independence Day 2 had an OK opening weekend. It's not the massive opening weekend that most expected from ID2 when it was first announced but it's bigger than 2012's OW and in line with The Day After Tomorrow's OW. Interest wasn't super high as the muddy trailers featuring world destruction did not generate much reaction with the general public.

For Alice 2, Independence Day 2 did not land the knockout punch for all the other films so Alice 2 in general had a good hold considering the circumstances. Now You See Me 2 is very close to the original's total and it will pass it by Wednesday at the latest. The Conjuring 2 had a very nice hold. Angry Birds has clawed back from the dead from its opening weekend. 2m is on the way.

It's a cross between that and also because there is zero competition.

Good start for The Secret Life of Pets. It will handily win this weekend. A bit of a shock to see Independence Day 2 already losing to Pets and that's not a very good hold. It will drop heavily after the holiday. Poor start for The Legend of Tarzan. OK holds for Alice 2 and Now You See Me 2. Mild opening day pre-sales for The Handmaiden.

The Secret Life of Pets will be getting upgraded tomorrow and on Saturday while Independence Day 2 loses screens/showtimes.

Good opening day for The Secret Life of Pets. Its opening day score is a 3.9/5. Ouch for Independence Day 2. It should have held better than that on a half holiday. Flat for The Legend of Tarzan. Opening day users weren't impressed either and have only given an average mark of 3.0/5. Alice 2 and Now You See Me 2 saw middling holds.

All family friendly films at least doubled their Thursday admissions. The Secret Life of Pets rode on the lack of kid movies out and stormed to an even bigger lead over Independence Day 2 on Friday. Poor for Independence Day 2 to decrease on the holiday from its opening Friday's admissions. Terrible increase for The Legend of Tarzan. Mediocre increase for Alice 2. Not good for Now You See Me 2. The Handmaiden had the 2nd worst increase of the top 10 but boasts the best score of the openers this week with a 4.6/5. Angry Birds quintupled its Thursday admissions with Secret Life of Pets and Independence Day 2 controlling more than 60% of screens combined. The holiday did not do any favors for The Conjuring 2 but it is nearing 1.5m.

Big crash for most films after the holiday. Kids films saw the biggest declines with Angry Birds shedding more than 60% of Friday's pre-sales. Every wide holdover registered a decline of over 50% week-to-week but the good news is that walk-ins will account for more of today's admissions so this will work out better for the openers than most of the holdovers.

Cold War 2 will get some IMAX 3D screenings beginning on Friday. Pre-sales have looked OK.

Theaters have begun pre-selling for next week's Finding Dory previews at some UA/GH locations. At UA, one theater is reporting a showtime over 45% full with only 1.5 days of pre-selling. GH locations are reporting strong ticket sales in 2D and a decent amount in 3D. From these early indications, it will challenge Minions for highest grossing animation OW of all time.

Widespread decreases on Saturday after coming off the Friday holiday. Out of the top 5, The Secret Life of Pets had a very solid decline. The Legend of Tarzan had a correction with Friday's low increase. Moviegoers checked out of watching Independence Day 2 and had the worst hold of any film on Saturday besides 2 family friendly/animated kids films. Sharp decline for Alice 2 on Saturday though what must come up on Friday must come down the day after. Now You See Me 2 is slowing down.

This weekend saw a decent haul from all films combined. This might be the biggest last weekend of June apart from the last two Transformers films that released during the same weekend in past years.

The Secret Life of Pets surprised with Independence Day 2 dropping the ball last weekend. In fact this summer season has been anything but kind to most films. While there have been some very decent totals from X-Men: Apocalypse, Jungle Book, Now You See Me 2, there hasn't been a film apart from Captain America 3 that blew all the doors down and is a major hit compared to its own expectations. The Secret Life of Pets hopes to change that but it will face insurmountable obstacles the next 2 weeks. Cold War 2 opens next Friday and it is widely expected to command 2 or even maybe 3 screens. Finding Dory will begin its HK onslaught with sneaks starting next Saturday. From the looks of it, most places will be giving it 1 screen for the entire day which means The Secret Life of Pets will be out of 3 screens at the least. It will need an undeniably strong hold if it has any chance of pushing past 6m. 5m is possible but it really depends on next week. The week after Finding Dory, Central Intelligence and Three will all fight for screens and with Finding Dory alone rummaging for 3-4 screens, there really is no room for The Secret Life of Pets to survive in that hostile climate. 1.8m is a very good start though and should not be overlooked.

Independence Day 2 crumbled under the weight of expectations. For theater operators, the expectation was that Independence Day 2 would be victorious in winning a 2nd weekend but poor word of mouth sunk in and it never recovered even with this week's holiday. 5m is probably going to happen even with the dried up admissions in the next few days but it is a very poor hold especially with the holiday falling on a Friday.

The Legend of Tarzan tried to be the other foil but it never really took off with The Secret Life of Pets dominating families and couples while Independence Day 2 played to the male crowd. That being said, it performed in line with expectations. It won't have any time for legs as its the #3 movie this weekend so theaters will be looking to cut its showtimes heavily for Cold War 2 next weekend.

Alice 2 and Now You See Me 2 both saw mediocre holds. For Alice 2, it surpasses 2m while Now You See Me 2 beams toward 4m.

Independence Day: Resurgence will finish around 20% behind the original.

Early Friday schedules

Note: The number of showtimes in parentheses for holdovers is from Wednesday.

Broadway/AMC
Palace APM
NewHoldoversLeaving
Cold War 2 - 29 showingsThe Handmaiden - 1 showing (▼ 3)The Secret Life of Pets (3D Can. - Wed.)
The Legend of Tarzan - 3 showings (▼ 9)Independence Day: Resurgence
The Secret Life of Pets (Can.) - 7 showings (▼ 9)Kidnap Ding Ding Don
Independence Day: Resurgence - 2 showings (▼ 7)The Conjuring 2
Alice Through the Looking Glass - 2 showings (=)Warcraft
Now You See Me 2
That was unexpected. This type of scheduling is only reserved for the biggest of tentpoles usually superhero movies. Pre-sales don't match the supply that Broadway/AMC is giving out on Friday. I'll need to see other theater chains first before giving out a full assessment. I definitely see Cold War getting at least 2 screens and I can see it getting 3 screens at theaters that have more screens, however handing out 5 screens to Cold War at other theater chains won't be happening.

Due to this surprising development, there were massive holdover cuts on Friday, most shocking going to Independence Day 2. Some theaters have completely axed Independence Day 2 on Friday and it looks like Thursday will be its last day in those theaters. The Secret Life of Pets gets nearly full day showtimes although it gets severely slashed at night. The Legend of Tarzan drops down to 1 showtime at some locations. The rest of the holdovers will only get a couple of showtimes at best if theaters decide to hold onto them for another week.

More Friday schedules are coming out and at MCL/GH, both have opted to show Cold War 2 on 2 screens. The disparity between Broadway/AMC and MCL/GH will be stretched further with UA expected to give it 2 screens as well.

These drops wouldn't be so bad if there wasn't a big movie coming out on Friday. Also with the one-two punch of Cold War 2 opening on Friday and Finding Dory sneaks starting on Saturday, they will deliver huge blows to every holdover this weekend.

Cold War 2 is powering through at Broadway/AMC but at other theater chains, ticket sales are a bit chillier. The 9 AM shows at Palace APM are bit busier than the 11 AM morning shows because seniors get an early morning discount. Afternoon shows are slow but night sales is really helping offset the low ticket sales from the afternoon. Cold War 2's doing better business 2 days out than Captain America 3 but that came out on a Wednesday vs. Friday for Cold War 2.

The only real question for Cold War 2 is how will it fare at locations other than Broadway/AMC.

Cold War 2
Opening: July 8, 2016

The sequel to 2012's biggest local film of the year heats up theaters this weekend.

Rolling back to 2012, Cold War opened the week after Skyfall, the 3rd Daniel Craig James Bond film. Skyfall, as expected, began with a very good opening weekend in the winter season and had huge buzz with many thinking that it would play well into late November so it was a tough ask for Cold War to even match Skyfall's OW. Little did anyone expect, Cold War ramped up a good start on Thursday by tripling its pre-sales number with walk-ins. That opening day admissions number surprised and surpassed Skyfall's opening day admissions. The weekend played out pretty much the same with it eclipsing 80,000 admissions on Saturday and opening with over 1.6m. It did not rest on its laurels as it wiggled its way to 5.5m and passed Skyfall's total in the process.

Cold War 2 rams its way into theaters on Friday with major support from the leading theater chain. At Broadway/AMC, its home turf, this is playing like a tentpole with nearly 30 showtimes on offer. UA/MCL/GH aren't quite as excited and have dumped this on 2 screens. With nearly half the showtimes sequestered at one theater chain, Cold War 2 will have to defy expectations quickly if it wants to add showtimes at other theater chains this weekend.

Pre-sales are very strong at Broadway/AMC though the other theater chains have done relatively well since most of them did not give 2 weeks pre-selling that Broadway/AMC did. Walk-ins won't nearly be as strong as last time with upfront demand busting out at the gates but ticket sales are much more expensive than in 2012 and it has IMAX.

This weekend will be the highlighted by the opening of Cold War 2 but also the sneak previews of Finding Dory which will hinder Cold War 2's potential gross this weekend. Since theaters must allocate showings to Finding Dory, this will lessen the chance that Cold War 2 grabs significantly more showtimes on Saturday/Sunday.

Opening with over 600 showtimes on Friday, this will blow away the original's opening weekend even with a 3-day opening. Adding in Thursday previews, Cold War 2 will push off with 2.7m.

Legs will be a huge issue with Finding Dory expected to bring down animation records. In addition, early reviews don't seem to be as positive for Cold War 2 than they were for Cold War. The amount of competition on July 14 alone will impede Cold War 2's legs then you've got big movies like Star Trek Beyond and Ice Age: Collision Course still to come in July which are expected to open over 1.5m each. Over a 3 multiplier is out of the question with Finding Dory ready to slay the box office next weekend but it will pass the original's gross and 6m.

Opening weekend - $2,700,000
Total - $6,700,000 (2.48 multiplier)

Cold War 2 has grown stronger in the early morning showtimes and at night with all peak showtimes at least 65% full. Early morning showtimes have jumped more than 100 admissions collectively since yesterday.
