Most holdovers had weak to average holds today and that will only get worse as the weekend continues. Cold War 2 opened to very good sneaks with just 10 and 11 PM shows. Early reviews are coming in hot with a very good 4.5/5 rating posted so far.

Cold War 2 doubled the original's opening day pre-sales and is +158.4%. With Cold War 2 dominating screens and box office sales, every other holdover in the top 10 fell over 70%. Independence Day 2 was annihilated. There's more pain to come for the holdovers tomorrow with Finding Dory opening with sneak previews.

2 PM update: Cold War 2 has surpassed the original's admissions. It is currently looking at about 53,000-55,000 for the day. Its rating has improved from Thursday night and is up to 4.6.
Finding Dory has looked very strong with previews. It is on pace for over $500,000 in 2 days.

At the newly opened Festival Walk now under the MCL chain, Finding Dory is over 35% full for the day with Saturday's sneak previews. There's a mix of 3D and 2D showings in there and there were some newly added afternoon shows last night. Night time shows are very good for an animated film. 33 theaters will book showtimes for Finding Dory previews on Saturday with varying amounts of support. MCL is the biggest supporter of Finding Dory sneaks. The GRAND leads off with 14 showings of Finding Dory on Saturday, all in 3D. Golden Harvest is next with full day showings. UA has every theater showing Finding Dory on Saturday but mostly on 1-2 showtimes. Broadway/AMC has given nearly zero showtimes with their own Cold War 2's release this weekend. Only 1/11 theaters will show Finding Dory this weekend with more adding Finding Dory to their schedules on Monday.

Re: HK 7/8 FRI: Cold War 2 freezes competition; FD Sat. snea
I read that and from what I got is that only few theaters are showing it on the weekend. More are adding it on Monday. The release date though is not Monday its next weekend. Here in Singapore sneaks are only for weekends and don't extend to weekdays, hence the question.

Drops for the holdovers weren't great as live action films dropped over 60%. Family friendly films weren't immune either despite 0 semi-wide openers on Thursday. Cold War 2's 10 PM previews generated over $100,000 on Thursday. It will obliterate the field this weekend.

Cold War 2 did not collapse at night. I was expecting a big slowdown but walk-ins were brisk at night. Its opening day score has officially come in at a 4.4/5. A very good score overall. Every holdover in the top 10 fell because of Cold War 2's fury on Friday. The Secret Life of Pets fell the best of any top 10 holdover. Though it fell 80% from last Friday's holiday, family friendly films like Alice fell around 90% so it's a slight improvement over the average drop for a kid film. Independence Day 2 collapsed like a house of cards. It had the worst hold week-to-week and on Friday. 5m is finished and it might not make it to a 2 multiplier. Me Before You sneaks are still ongoing. The film is doing well.

Good increase for Cold War 2. Great sneak previews pre-sales for Finding Dory. The Secret Life of Pets had a surprisingly good hold, however, we should start to see a shift in attention toward Finding Dory as early as this weekend. Tarzan had one of the worst increases of the top 10 today but also one of the top week-to-week holds. It hasn't done that bad here. Independence Day 2 just keeps dying.

WOW. That is the biggest single day admissions for a 2D film since The Dark Knight Rises I believe. Finding Dory had a good start to sneaks week. The Secret Life of Pets saw a larger drop in final numbers from pre-sales with walk-in support going toward Cold War 2 or attention being drawn toward Finding Dory. Legend of Tarzan saw its week-to-week hold grow larger akin to Pets. Same story with most walk-ins heading to see Cold War 2 and families wanting to catch Finding Dory early. Independence Day 2 struggled to get a foot in today. I wonder if it will even make the top 10 next week.

Cold War 2 grabs the biggest non holiday 2D OW since TDKR and is the 2nd highest OW of any local film behind Kung Fu Hustle. A lot of things had to happen for Cold War 2 to succeed including Independence Day 2 disappointing but luckily it did. Critic reviews did not damper moviegoers' interest and most think it is a good movie including me. Cold War 2 averaged over 130 admissions per showing today! Where it succeeded was due to huge starpower and a pretty good trailer that generated tons of conversation and buzz in the preceding months before this weekend. Where it goes from here will be interesting to watch. Right out of the gates next weekend is Finding Dory's opening and it is the frontrunner to win the core summer months (July-August). How much Cold War 2 will drop next weekend is a big question. If it can maintain a 50% drop, it would be fantastic. Finding Dory sneaks were off to a good start on Saturday and it should improve on Sunday with theaters joining in. Many here think Dory will win the core summer months and for good reason. Finding Dory is heading toward $500m domestic and well received Pixar movies almost always overperform in HK. These sneaks may seem low but in retrospect, it is a very good start. Only one Broadway/AMC theater showed this on Saturday and these two theater chains combined generate the most revenue of any theater chain in HK. Owned under one umbrella by the same group, EDKO, they had their very own reason not to show it: Cold War 2. EDKO is one of the major producers and the distributor for Cold War 2. They want to give their film their full support so it's obvious why Finding Dory got sidelined this weekend at that theater chain. For the day, Finding Dory averaged above 70 admissions per showing which is very good. Finding Dory had quite a number of 10 pm and 11 pm showings which are considered toxic for an animated film. The Secret Life of Pets was served a triple whammy this weekend with no holiday, Cold War 2 and Finding Dory sneaks impeding on its weekend hold. It will fall around 64% despite a big opener taking the big screens away from Pets and dominating the field plus direct competition encroaching on its weekend showtimes. The Legend of Tarzan didn't have a good hold but it was not disastrous either. It has done an acceptable job so far in HK and will leave theaters with about 1.4m which isn't bad. It came in, did its job and left. Independence Day: Resurgence could not hold down the fort long enough to pass 5m and collapsed pretty much after the holiday last week. The impending doom pretty much started on its 2nd weekend when it dropped over 50% and lost IMAX showings to Legend of Tarzan.

Good Sunday for Cold War 2. Despite Finding Dory having a smaller lead in pre-sales on Sunday over Pets than on Saturday, it finishes with a bigger gap than it did on Saturday. The tide is turning for The Secret Life of Pets. While it did not have any other animation films or major kids films coveting for attention in the last two weeks, the focus is shifting toward Finding Dory. The likes are starting to pile up for Finding Dory and this weekend's gross won't sway theater operators to keep it around for much longer. Tarzan's hold was iffy and Independence Day 2 continues to bleed.

9 | Eye in the Sky | 6,066 | 2,855 | -52.9% |
Wonderful admissions for Cold War 2. Those are strong preview admissions for Finding Dory with limited showtimes for most theaters and almost zero help from the biggest theater operator.
| Weekend Estimates | | | July 7 |
Rank | Movie | TW | % chg | Total |
1 | Cold War 2 | $2,875,000 | | $2,875,000 |

3 | Finding Dory | $480,000 | | $480,000 |
4 | The Legend of Tarzan | $225,000 | -70.4% | $1,195,000 |
5 | Independence Day: Resurgence | $170,000 | -85.7% | $4,680,000 |
Great weekend overall boosted by Cold War 2's 3-day opening weekend and Finding Dory's previews. Cold War 2's opening weekend is stunning. To have only 3 days as its opening weekend in the summer is really risky and to open 6 days before the frontrunner for the core summer win is released looked like suicide at one point. One of the biggest surprise weekends ever in the past few years.

Re: HK 7/7 PRO: Cold War 2 biggest non-holi. 2D OW since TDK
Cold War 2's Saturday (7.51m HK, US$965,959) is the biggest single day gross for a local film ever beating Kung Fu Hustle's Christmas Day back in 2004. It also scored the biggest opening day for a local film with $5.41m HK ($695,850).
Early Thursday schedules
Broadway/AMC: Cold War 2 is still on 4 screens. Finding Dory gets 1 or less than 1 screen. MCL: Cold War 2 and Finding Dory are about even here. Cold War 2 has the slight edge in showtimes. Golden Harvest: Cold War 2 is placed on 2 screens here but Finding Dory either has the biggest screen or 2 screens to make up for it.
Central Intelligence/Three mostly received 2-3 showtimes but some have upped it to 5 showtimes. Theaters showing Me Before You have given it 4-5 showtimes.

Re: HK 7/7 PRO: Cold War 2 biggest non-holi. 2D OW since TDK
UA has added their schedules and Cold War 2 is being shown on 2 screens (either 2 screens or 1 IMAX + 1 regular). Finding Dory has the bigger screen out of the two at most places at the theaters with IMAX and the 2nd biggest at the regular theaters.

Oh my God, it's a carbon copy of the first film! Why is everybody seeing it and loving it? Can't they see they've been duped!

Good hold for Cold War 2. Finding Dory's number looks better than expected. It has less than twice the number of showtimes than Cold War 2 so it'll be interesting to see how much Cold War 2 pulls away in the afternoon and especially the evening hours. Mediocre start for Me Before You. The Secret Life of Pets held up well. Central Intelligence and Three are flopping. Check out that tumble for Legend of Tarzan. _______________________________________ Early morning pre-sales have nudged Finding Dory to within less than 1,000 admissions from Cold War 2. Cold War 2 is expected to build on its lead during late afternoon/evening hours. Star Trek 3 has started pre-selling in IMAX. It's looking decent.

At Festival Walk, they're going with Finding Dory as the main attraction. Finding Dory pre-sales are incredibly strong up and down till the 10 PM shows and it's doubling Cold War 2's admissions on Saturday. Cold War 2's ticket sales are more consistent throughout the day with 10 PM shows double Finding Dory's. Looking at the major theater chains, Broadway/AMC are Cold War 2 territory. UA seems to be siding with Cold War 2. MCL and GH are favoring Finding Dory. 3D prices and weekend surge will lead Finding Dory to a weekend victory.

2 | Finding Dory | -- | 24,065 | -- |

Finding Dory came within 200 admissions of the lead this afternoon but Cold War 2 pulled away at night. Walk-ins for Cold War 2 and Finding Dory were at 60% and 64%. Those are both impressive figures. Cold War 2 had more than double the showtimes and still maintained walk-ins in the 60% area. Finding Dory had not enough showings but walk-ins accounted for almost 2/3 which suggests really strong word of mouth. Walk-in figures were 18,000 admissions for Cold War 2 and over 15,000 admissions for Finding Dory. Finding Dory's opening day score is an excellent 4.5/5. Below the top 2, Central Intelligence had the least amount of showtimes of the top 6 but secured the #3 spot. Word of mouth is looking really good with it above Finding Dory's opening day rating and sitting at 4.6. Unfortunately, due to the continued strength of Cold War 2 and the emergence of Finding Dory, it will be a casualty of scheduling this weekend (as will the other films below the top 2). Me Before You did pretty well too. It is tied with Finding Dory with an opening day rating of 4.5. The Secret Life of Pets is on life support with Finding Dory taking over as the must-see attraction for kids. Three is a disaster and opening day reviewers haven't been kind. It only starts off with a 3.4. The rest of the holdovers saw massive scheduling cuts and they will feel even more on the hot seat this weekend.

Incredible displays of strength from both Cold War 2 and Finding Dory. Cold War 2's drop is very good and it expanded its pre-sales lead by 2,000 on Friday. Finding Dory's strength won't be coming from Friday numbers though as weekend sales are through the roof while Cold War 2's has dipped a little. Solid increase for Me Before You. Decent gain for Central Intelligence. The Secret Life of Pets is sinking fast.

Excellent first Thursday for Cold War 2. Finding Dory rose to the occasion with 3D prices lifting it close to the top. This is in about the best position it could be with losing to Cold War 2 by 6,000 admissions. It's just behind in gross and no matter what Cold War 2 does today, Saturday and Sunday will belong to Finding Dory. Decent number for Central Intelligence. Black-led movies don't generate a lot of money on opening weekend at HK's box office and this has fallen below the general action summer movie's opening day average. Word of mouth is robust and this should be a leggy action film. Me Before You had a good opening day. The Secret Life of Pets fell harder with Finding Dory opening but it will decline even more this weekend with Finding Dory and Cold War 2 talking more than 70% of the showtimes. Three disappointed and with weak word of mouth, this will falter this weekend.

6 PM update: Cold War 2, Finding Dory and Me Before You have surpassed their Thursday admissions. Cold War 2 looks like it will fall less than 40% from opening day while Finding Dory is headed for a 10% increase from Thursday.

Box office data for the previous two weeks was not published and Independence Day 2's opening weekend is based off a calculation. Excellent opening weekend for Cold War 2 in only 3 days. 6m will be crossed very soon. Mediocre hold for The Secret Life of Pets. Very good previews for Finding Dory. Bad hold for Legend of Tarzan. Independence Day 2 won't make it to a 2 multiplier. Alice 2 did alright in HK. Of course, it won't scale the heights of the first film but looking around at other territories, its HK gross was OK. It had to contend with a terrible release date and still came away with more than 2m. I think those are very good sneaks for Me Before You. This is counterprogramming at its best. Its opening in a sea of action/adventure/kids films and is the perfect film for the ladies. ____________________________________________ Suicide Squad has begun pre-selling in IMAX and in regular theaters. Pre-sales look good so far.

I did not expect Finding Dory to collapse that much nor Cold War 2 to have so many walk-ins. Superb walk-ins for Cold War 2. Finding Dory didn't have a great Saturday based off its Thursday admissions. I expected around 46-47k. Decent increases for Central Intelligence and Me Before You. The Secret Life of Pets is dipping quite heavily.

Cold War 2 outlasts Finding Dory for #1 even though it will lose to it on Sunday. By this weekend, Cold War 2 will be the 13th highest grossing local movie ever. If both Cold War 2 and Finding Dory make 2m each this weekend, it will be the first time 2 movies have grossed more than 2m each on the same weekend in the summer. Finding Dory's Sunday surge will be too little too late as Saturday was crucial in its defeat. Its weaker Saturday admissions put it at a big disadvantage and unless if Cold War 2 collapses today, it is looking at a #2 start though Disney can claim #1 on OW by adding its previews together. Central Intelligence had a mediocre start. Word of mouth is very good but interest was not high to begin with. Me Before You had a good opening weekend.

Powerful increase for Finding Dory but it will miss passing Cold War 2's gross with only its 4-day OW. It will need good walk-ins to come close to Cold War 2's projected OW gross. Very good for Cold War 2. It is on the verge of joining the top 50 all time. The Secret Life of Pets had an amazing Sunday increase but it's not enough to help it escape a drop over 60% this weekend. Ouch for Me Before You. Good increase for Central Intelligence.

Cold War 2 closed the weekend down 6% on Sunday which isn't a bad drop but something to pay attention to with it being only one of 3 films to drop on Sunday. Its rating has dropped down to a 4.0, worse than Ip Man 3's. Finding Dory had an OK Sunday increase but walk-ins are a worrying issue. Its rating has also gone down to a 4.0, not exactly the Pixar standard it has done in the past, but better than Minions and The Secret Life of Pets. Central Intelligence went up 5% which might speak to how well it is resonating with audiences. Its rating is best of the openers this week with a 4.3. Me Before You dropped hard today. Romance movies tend to have big Friday increases and weak Sundays. Its user rating has fallen to a 4.1. The Secret Life Of Pets had the 2nd best increase of the top 10 but it's been stuck in that not great but not terrible zone this week. I don't think theaters will save it next week with Star Trek 3 and Ghostbusters opening along with the successes of Cold War 2 and Finding Dory.

Rank | Movie | TW | % chg | Total |

Cold War 2 triumphed over Finding Dory thanks to some brilliant scheduling on Broadway/AMC's part and mostly decent word of mouth. Broadway/AMC scheduled Cold War 2 on 4 screens and showed Finding Dory mostly in 3D with terrible showtimes (8:30 AM) or no 10 pm showtimes on the 3rd or 4th biggest screen. Without that impediment, Finding Dory would have grossed over 3m including previews. Cold War 2 is going to surpass You Are The Apple of My Eye as the biggest Chinese language film in HK and Kung Fu Hustle as the biggest local film of all time and hit 8m. 9m is likely and 10m is possible if it does not falter this weekend. Finding Dory will look ahead to earn as much money as possible before Ice Age 5 opens. The Ice Age series is one of the few non-Pixar animation series that can command a sizable audience and that will affect Finding Dory's drop in 2 weeks. 7m is going to happen for Finding Dory and 8m is likely. Central Intelligence met expectations but interest is really low. Maybe word of mouth can leg it to over 1m though it will have 2 more action films entering the marketplace next week. Me Before You had an OK start. The Secret Life of Pets is on its last legs with Finding Dory severely cutting its audience off and stealing attention away. Ice Age 5 will finish the job on July 28 but it should still get to about 3.7-3.8m.

Re: HK 7/14 PRO: Cold War 2 outswims Finding Dory for #1
Finding Dory's opening weekend (including previews) is the 4th biggest for an animated picture behind Minions, Toy Story 3 and Monsters University. Cold War 2 will be the fastest to reach US$6m for a Chinese language/local film doing it in either 10 or 11 days.

That is a big coup for Finding Dory. To put it into perspective, let's compare last Thursday's with today's admissions.
Rank | Movie | Last Thu. | Mon. | % chg |
1 | Finding Dory | 24,065 | 19,122 | -20.5% |
2 | Cold War 2 | 30,272 | 18,440 | -39.1% |
3 | Central Intelligence | 6,606 | 6,802 | +3.0% |
4 | Me Before You | 5,608 | 4,255 | -24.1% |
5 | The Secret Life of Pets | 4,335 | 3,001 | -30.8% |
6 | Three | 2,994 | 1,577 | -47.3% |
7 | Independence Day: Resurgence | 1,385 | 486 | -64.9% |
8 | The Handmaiden | 417 | 360 | -13.7% |
9 | The Legend of Tarzan | 459 | 318 | -30.7% |
10 | Eye in the Sky | 972 | 155 | -84.1% |
Finding Dory down 20% is pretty good. It's not going to be as leggy as Inside Out but it will make over 8m. Cold War 2 dipping close to 40% from Thursday's admissions isn't good. 8m will still happen though 10m is now out of the picture and its chances of 9m have gone down. Central Intelligence was the only film to climb from its Thursday admissions but it started off at such a low base that it will still lose showtimes this week when Star Trek Beyond, Ghostbusters and Hentai Kamen 2 open. Me Before You eased off 24% from last Thursday. It's looking like a bit player. The Secret Life of Pets is prime for another showtime cut this week with that 30% decline.

Blue totally forgot how Ice Age movies have performed in HK. What is expected of Ice Age 5 in HK?
