Unstoppable

Release Date: November 12, 2010
Studio: 20th Century Fox
Director: Tony Scott
Cast: Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson, Kevin Chapman
Genre: Action, Drama, Thriller
Rating: PG-13
Premise: "Unstoppable" is about a runaway train carrying a cargo of toxic chemicals. The film pits an engineer and his conductor in a race against time. They're chasing the runaway train in a separate locomotive and need to bring it under control before it derails on a curve and causes a toxic spill that will decimate a town.

Denzel Washington is about as consistent as it gets in terms of box-office. He rarely ever has really big breakout hits, but also almost never delivers big disappointments. To date he has got ten $20+ million openers to his name. Out of his last eight wide releases, seven opened to $20+ million (the 8h being The Great Debaters which opened in just 1,171 theatres!). One of the directors he has worked with the most is Tony Scott. Together they have made four movies and the fifth, Unstoppable, is coming this fall. This is how the other four have performed:

The Taking of Pelham 123 - $65,452,312
Déjà Vu - $64,038,616
Man on Fire - $77,911,774
Crimson Tide - $91,387,195

Washington has already proven his box-office drawing abilities again this year when The Book of Eli opened to $32.8 million and finished with $94.8 million, making it Washington's 4th-biggest film so far. He's still in the prime of his career and Unstoppable, as generic as its plot may sound, should be yet another mediumd-sized performer for him.

The only thing that surprises me is that there's still no trailer out for the film coming to theatres in less than four months. Another interesting thing is that it has been rated PG-13 which is rather unusual for Tony Scott's films (though Déjà Vu was PG-13 as well). Overall it should perform similarly to the last two Washington/Scott collaboartions.

My early predictions:

Opening Weekend - $26 million

Total Gross - $73 million

Trailer looks generic and boring as hell.

Flop of the holiday season is my bet.

Yeah, the trailer looks terribly generic, but on the other hand Washington is very consistent.

The trailer may be mediocore, but I still see this as a solid perfomer at best. The Scott and Denzel combo gurantees atleast $20M OW.

Eerily similar runs for all of 'em. Unstoppable's good reviews are paying off, though. It's showing some solid legs and $70+ million is very much in play.

It is now tracking ahead of Training Day and Man on Fire and should be at $60+ million by the end of the weekend. It has a shot at ending up with around $80 million when all is said and done....which would be very good if it wasn't for the overblown budget.

With $80,148,847 in the bag after nine weks on release it has showcased better legs than most films I compared it with in this thread. While their runs started out similarly, it looks like Unsoppable's good WoM actually did has a good effect on its legs which were unusually good for a Washington action film.

Its current multiplier if 3.53 and it has already overtaken the total grosses of films like Training Day or Man on Fire, making it the 7th film in Washington's acreer to pass $80 million and once again proving his consistency as a box-office draw (as in the very same year he also delivered the $94 million success The Book of Eli). It's also the 2nd-bigest Washington/Scott collaboration.

Too bad the budget was so high, otherwise it'd be considered a solid hit for everyone involved.

Too bad the very generic marketing and bad handling by Fox. This could have opened higher and would have had a slight chance in making 100m

By the way, for a Denzel Washington film, it is a very solid overseas performer too. It's at $82.2 million and still keeps making money.

Washington's biggest OS films ever:

1. American Gangster - $136.3 million
2. Déjà Vu - $116.5 million
3. Inside Man - $95.9 million
4. The Pelican Brief - $94.5 million
5. The Bone Collector - $85 million
6. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - $84.7 million

This looks like it'll enter the Top 5.
