Post Think About This For a Second
11/16/2001: Harry Potter 1: 90.2 million = new opening weekend record
9 1/2 years later
Harry Potter 8: 92 million = new opening DAY record

Pretty damn ridiculous that it took less than a decade for the ow record to become the od record...

Not exactly unprecedented, though.

OW record 1989: The Last Crusade - $29.4m
OD record 1999: The Phantom Menace - $28.5m

OW record 1987: Beverly Hills Cop 2 - $26.3m
SD record 1997: The Lost World - $26.1m

It took a little bit longer for:

OW record 1972: The Godfather - $5.3m
OD record 1983: Return of the Jedi - $6.2m

OW record 1997: The Lost World - $72.1m
OD record 2009: New Moon - $72.7m

We used to project a films legs by using a weekend multiplier, but we're getting to the point where we'll be predicting OD's and then using a OD multiplier.

Various records will be smashed next year.

How much did 3D accelerate some of these though?

Potter not so much. It made 43% only in 3D. Consider that even if it wasn't in 3D, it'd still have the IMAX boost to help it so the 3D premium alone was probably closer to like 15% overall. It'd still have broken 80m OD I think even without 3D.

Probably wouldn't be breaking the OW record without 3D though.

That makes sense.

3D has acted as an inflation accelerator, but if it continues to decline, it will make adjusting for inflation more interesting as films from 2009-2011 may have been boosted more than films in the post 2011 world.
