INTL box office is significantly driven by the exchange rates so let's take a look how the US-$ is doing this year:

1 Euro = $1.46 Dezember 09
1 Euro = $1.43 Euro January
1 Euro = $1.37 February
1 Euro = $1.36 March
1 Euro = $1.34 April
1 Euro = $1.26 May
1 Euro = $1.22 June (4 days)

US-$ vs. Pound Sterling (monthly average):

1 GBP = $1.66 November 09 (highest monthly average in 2009)
1 GBP = $1.62 Dezember 09
1 GBP = $1.62 January
1 GBP = $1.56 February
1 GBP = $1.50 March

Wait, isn't it the other way round, like:

€1 = $1.49 November 09 (highest monthly average in 2009)
€1 = $1.46 Dezember 09
€1 = $1.43 January
€1 = $1.37 February
€1 = $1.36 March
€1 = $1.34 April
€1 = $1.26 May
€1 = $1.22 June (4 days)

Same with Pounds...

Of course, you're absolutely right...

BTW: The Euro dropped below the $1.20 mark for the first time in four years...

I'm starting to panic. It better have returned to normal when DH1 comes out.

It better drops further before DH1 arrives...

Case study:

When 2012 was released at the Euro peak in November 09 it made $185m of its $603m INTL gross in the Euro Zone and Great Britain. At today's exchange rates that $185m gross would shrink to $151m...

Good news for Hollywood:

After the Euro hit a 4 year low during the Greece crises ($1.18), it's back to $1.30 - so every $100m grosser in the Euro Zone is now worth $110m...

UPDATE:

US-$ vs. Euro (monthly average):

1 Euro = $1.49 November 09 (highest monthly average in 2009)
1 Euro = $1.46 Dezember 09
1 Euro = $1.43 January
1 Euro = $1.37 February
1 Euro = $1.36 March

Obama, strengthen the dollar!!!

Here's hoping the dollar strengthens enough to prevent HP7 from surpassing TS3 worldwide. It's only right.

Ha, the dollar is imploding on itself. AUD has broken parity, which would add 25% to DH1's gross compared to HBP's.

TS3's WW gross still in play.

Now that PIRATES 4 is opening, here's a look at the exchange rate when PIRATES 3 opened:

€1 = $1.35

Right now the exchange rate is

€1 = $1.42

In addition to 3D prices and inflation PIRATES 4 also has a 5 % exchange rate advantage - at least from the Euro Zone...

BTW: Goldman Sachs just reported that they expect the exchange rate to drop to

€1 = $1.55

within a year - looking good for Summer 2012...

Post subject:  Re: The exchange rate thread

Once again, the Euro went down to €1 = $1.22 - the lowest since 2010...

Bad news for the studios...

Why should we trust bankers again?

So the US-$ reached a 9 year high - that's very bad news for the Hollywood studios...

The Euro went from $1.40 to $1.20 in just 9 months

Just one example: THE HOBBIT 3 would have made $80.4m in Germany 9 months ago, instead it is at $68.9m right now...

Do they hedge against currency fluctuations? Some of them might, considering their exposure.

Post subject:  Re: The exchange rate thread

Euro is now down to a 11 year low - down to $1.12...

Once again, THE HOBBIT 3 example:
Its German €62.6m gross was $87.6m worth just 10 months ago, but is now only $70.1m worth...

This is serious money for the Hollywood Studios...

Post subject:  Re: The exchange rate thread

If the US-$ gained as much vs. other currencies as vs. the Euro, a $1b grosser suddenly becomes a $800m grosser...

The Yen has hit a 7/8 year low vs the Dollar since this past fall, too.

Hollywood films don't make as much in Japan as they did in the past, but it's going to make the hit films from this upcoming year look worse than they really are in USD. Just last year, a lot of films beat matched/beat their previous installments or comparable films in Yen and admissions, but were well below in USD.

Using Big Hero 6 as a recent example, which was sitting at ¥6.41 billion as of last Sunday, it'd have earned:

2010 in $75/76 million
2011 in $81/82 million
2012 in $79/80 million
2013 in $65/66 million

And it'd be on track for $100 million+, but currently, it's at $54/55 million with the current exchange rate and will make around $70/75 million.

2014 is going to be up over 2013 in Yen and admissions, and should be above most years since 2000, but it'll be near the bottom of the list in USD.

Frozen got lucky and made all its earnings before the fall last year, otherwise its $250 million total would be looking more like $210/215 million right now. Still huge, of course, but that's only a difference a couple months could have made.
