The first film made almost $263 million overseas and $415 million worldwide, so the follow-up definitely deserves a thread on its own. In Germany the presales for the Wednesday, May 26th previews have been going for a while now and they seem even bigger than for the first film. My theatre currently has it on three out of 11 screens for that night, but I expect them to upgrade to one more screen. This will certainly break $200 million again overseas. Sex and the City also played well during the European Football Championship. It remained #1 in Germany for five weeks back in summer 2008... |

At my local theatre the previews are already on 5 out of 9 screens (1,800 out of 2,400 seats)... S&TC1 holds the record for so-called Ladies Night previews with 200,000 admissions... |

Hmm, with Prince of Persia and Robin Hood looking at somewhat underwhelming totals...could Sex and the City 2 actually become the highest-grossing live action May release overseas? I mean Iron Man 2 is heading for around $300 million so it'll be close. |

I think the overseas markets are growing very fast for all the movies and thus we see a lot of good performances overseas. I will not be surprised if this makes more than 300M (as you said the first one made 263M). There is also a chance that this might pass IM2 though that will have to be decided after the opening weekend. Here also the sales for Ladies Night out is huge for SATC2 and they have been playing SATC 1 for the past week which in itself is doing great |

From Screendaily Sex and the City 2 started its international rollout with an estimated $27.6m (representing 3.7m admissions) from 3,700 screens in 17 countries, the strong start contrasting with the film’s weaker than expected North American opening this weekend. The romantic comedy sequel dominated the UK marketplace, taking an impressive $9.2m from 529 situations, estimated distributor Warner Bros Pictures International (WBPI). That was 24% more than the opening take in the market for the original Sex and the City. The sequel had the biggest opening of the year in Germany, grossing an estimated $7.3m (with preview grosses included) from 982 screens, 23% ahead of the original film. The opening in Italy produced an estimated $2.4m from 499 screens, 4% ahead of the original. Doubling the original’s take, Sex 2 opened in Sweden with an estimated $1.5m (including preview grosses) from 124 screens. The $1.4m (including previews) take from 123 screens in Holland was 42% up on the original while the $981,000 (160,000 admissions) from 202 screens in Brazil was on a par with the first film. Sex 2 expands again next weekend, opening in markets including France, Australia, Russia, Spain and Mexico |

Not really impressed with the opening though it has opened only in 17 markets. I was expecting this to have reached 30-35M this weekend. Anyways not a bad number, next weekend will give a clear picture where it might land in WW total |

Quote: Hot-blooded openings in 32 markets including first-place showings in France and Australia propelled Warner Bros./New Line's "Sex and the City 2" to the No. 1 spot on the foreign circuit on the weekend. The sequel to 2008's original based on the long-running HBO TV series collected a lusty $45 million from a total of 7,970 screens in 49 territories. After two frames on the foreign circuit, "Sex and the City 2" has generated a foreign gross total of about $90 million, beating its domestic cume by nearly $17 million. Top opening market was Australia, where "Sex 2" took about 65% of the boxoffice total generated by the market's top five titles, as per the distributor. Down Under tally was $7.6 million (including previews) from 562 sites, for a per-screen average of $13,523. In France, "Sex 2" pulled $3.9 million from 526 situations. Russia contributed the same amount from 659 screens while Japan provided $3 million from 402 locations. Biggest holdover was Germany where the No. 1 market tally was $3.6 million from 993 spots for a cume of $14.6 million. A strong second stanza in the U.K. provided a No. 1 ranking with $3.5 million from 530 locations for a market cume of $19.6 million. |

AUSTRALIA (AU$) - Opening Weekend SAC2 opened on a Wednesday having an extra day of play over regular openers. It mustered a strong AU$7.8m over the regular 4-Day (Thu-Sun) and close to AU$9m overall. While the 4-Day weekend didn't beat the original's AU$8m, it was pretty close and is looking to build a nice tally leading up to the Queen's Birthday holidays next Monday (unlike SAC1 which actually opened on QBirthday weekend). The original finished with just under AU$27m, a very strong gross....SAC2 should gross in the realm of $24-$28m. 1) The Twilight Saga: New Moon - $16,099,648 (US$14.5m - 530 SC) 2) Harry Potter 6: HBP - $14,330,931 (4-Day or $18,705,212/ US$14.4m/ 1.8m adms. 5-Day - 510 SC) 3) Lord Of The Rings: TTT - $14,115,394 (US$7,918,875 - 424 SC) 4) Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen - $13,647,361 (or $16,294,847 5-Day - 457 SC) 5) Star Wars 3: ROTS - $13,359,734 (incl. $1.2m midnights - US$10,446,272 - 535 SC) or US$11,210,696 by Mon 6) The Simpsons Movie - $13,228,926 (442 SC) 7) Shrek 2 - $13,159,869 (US$9,720,795 or $13,646,848 incl. $105,700,000 in the bank entering the weekend. In Germany it is looking at a sub-50% drop again for around 190,000 admissions over the weekend. By the end of its third frame it'll be #2 of the year here. |

$131.7 million after its third weekend overseas Around 195,000 admissions in Germany put its total at 1.9 million admissions (almost 300,000 ahead of the first film at the same point of their runs and about 600,000 away from the first film's total). $200 million overseas will certainly fall soon, but I am unsure about it beating the first film's OS number, even with the lack of competition. |

Could this get any worse for a sequel? It clicked neither domestically nor overseas though the numbers are not that under-whelming because of the controlled Production Budget but still it will decrease by about 80-90m OS from the original when the market is growing and inflation is kicking in. ![]() |

Quote: Fifth was Warner Bros./New Line's "Sex and the City 2," which tallied $7.2 million at about 5,500 screens in 58 territories. Overseas gross total stands at $172 million, $91.4 million shy of the foreign gross total compiled by 2009's "Sex and the City: The Movie." Germany and UK are its biggest OS territories. I think it might stick around for a little while and get to $200 million. This movie was affected more by the exchange rate than almost any other recent overseas performer because the prime markets for Sex and the City are in Europe where the weak Euro is affecting the box-office. With the same exchange rate as in 2008 it would have finished not that far off the first film's OS total. |

Quote: Warner Bros./New Line's "Sex and the City 2" drew $3.6 million from 4,050 situations in 58 markets, for an international cume of $180 million. That leaves the sequel to the long-running HBO TV series $83.4 million shy of the $263.4 million foreign gross total amassed by 2008's "Sex and the City: The Movie." Keeps chugging along. |

Still no new overseas update. I assume it's at somewhere around $190 million. In Germany it passed 2.5 million admissions, standing at 2,505,311 admissions now. It became only the second movie this year to pass this number (after Alice in Wonderland) and it wouldn't surprise me if the film remains in the Top 10 of the year when all is said and done. |
