Post Re: Iron Man 2 (INTL)
Looks like IM2 is turning out to be a disappointment OS. It could very well end up doing less than IM's 99m OS opening weekend!!!

I frankly speaking don't expect more than $330m OS, but now........a total less than original is possible!

Also, let me remind you that comic book movies always do less OS compared to DOM. The only comic book movies that have bucked that trend is Spider-man and Fantastic four.

Did you mean superhero comic books adaptations? Cause there are lots of comic book movies that grossed more OS.

Hm, U.S. gross will probably still outstrip overseas. Still, $800+ million WW looks very likely, which would be pretty fantastic.

Here some details:

Marvel Studios' "Iron Man 2," this year's opening summer tentpole, lit up the foreign theatrical circuit with a five-day overseas launch bagging $100.2 million from 6,764 sites in 53 markets for a sparkling per-screen average of $14,814.

Distributor Paramount Pictures International says the sequel to 2008's Marvel original starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow finished No. 1 in 52 of the opening territories, beating "Iron Man's" opening overall numbers by 26% in local currencies.

Paramount said "'Iron Man 2" beat the original's openings in every market "on a local currency like-for-like basis."

The U.K. opening round furnished $12.2 million from 528 venues, 49% ahead of the "Iron Man" opening gross (excluding $1.4 million in preview grosses) in pound sterling, said Paramount. In Korea, the opening launch generated $10.8 million from 855 situations, 79% ahead of the comparable " Iron Man" figure.

Australia produced $8.8 million from 251 screens, exceeding the "Iron Man" opening in the market by 52%, while France came up with $8.2 million from 722 locations, 21% more than "Iron Man's" market bow.

In Russia, the tally was $8.2 million from 650 spots, 89% more than the comparable "Iron Man" figure, making the sequel the largest market opening for a live action film distributed by Paramount.

Separately, IMAX Corp. reported that "Iron Man 2's" opening weekend grossed $2.25 million at 48 IMAX overseas venues -- for a per-screen average of $46,875 -- thus establishing a boxoffice record for a 2D title at IMAX foreign situations. Previous record holder was 2009's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," which opened to $2.1 million.
The original "Iron Man" rolled up a total foreign gross of $265 million and another $318.3 million in the U.S. and Canada.

Paramount rushed "Iron Man 2" into the foreign market a week before the film's domestic bow on May 7 to provide the film longer theatrical playing time before the month-long World Cup begins in South Africa on June 11. The most widely watched sports event in the world, the soccer tournament draws a huge male viewership, a key demo for the "Iron Man" sequel and many other summer tentpoles.

This week, "Iron Man 2" opens in seven territories including China, India and Germany. A Japan debut begins June 11.

I think some of the issues is the currency issues, I know the Euro is down from last year and that makes a difference.

I think it's Hong Kong. I'm not sure if they use 3 day or 4 day but Ip Man 2 definitely won the 4 day (Thu-Sun) weekend. Maybe they are arguing semantics in this one as Iron Man 2 did win the 3 day weekend (Fri-Sun).

Edit: Looks like we were both wrong. They counted the 3 day weekend when it came to Hong Kong's numbers.

2008 was a huge year in terms of exchange rates, we are of course not at those levels.

High-Level Overseas comparisons:

Iron Man 2 - $100.2m (53/6764)
Iron Man - $98,588,581 (56/7588)

So not much more in a comparable amount of markets. At this rate, it's definately not surpassing $350m and might not even make it much past $300m.

Oh well, this is a comic movie afterall.

It was huge before the crisis hit all the countries, so until, like, August.

Iron Man and Iron Man 2 were released on different days. Iron Man was released on a Wednesday while Iron Man 2 was released on Friday. BOM probably added in the Wednesday gross into the opening weekend of Iron Man so Iron Man 2 should have improved by about 60-70% from the original.

This is going to have a strong opening in Germany. The original got around 308,000 admissions opening weekend. I see the sequel increasing at least 50% over that.
