How many markets was this released this weekend ? 44.8 is a great number given that it did not open in most of the small markets

Post Re: Toy Story 3 (INTL.) - The Assault Begins
"Pixar/Disney's "Toy Story 3," the weekend's No. 1 domestic film, opened briskly on the foreign theatrical circuit, grossing $44.8 million from 4,787 screens in 25 territories -- only a quarter of the total overseas marketplace.

Strong debuts in China and in Latin America, said Disney, "registered the biggest consolidated debut for a Pixar title from this bucket of release markets, almost doubling the (comparable) high set by 'Up.' " That 2009 title drew total foreign boxoffice of $438 million (versus $293 million domestic).

Top market for the Pixar animation threequel was Mexico, which provided $14.3 million, which Disney described as the biggest market opening ever for an animation title.

In China, "Toy Story 3" grossed $9.5 million on the weekend, also a record market debut for an animation film. Brazil came up with 3.3 million, best market opening to date for a Pixar title, while Argentina tallied $2.3 million, another record market opening.

As it has for all previous Pixar titles, Disney is releasing "Toy Story 3" in a months-long, graduated overseas rollout to capitalize on local market conditions around the world. The threequel this week bows in eight territories including Australia and India."

From THR.

That is INSANE for Mexico.

TS3 results in Eastern Europe must be really bad if they don't mention Russian or Polish results...

Very strong grosses in Mexico and CHina. BRazil was relatively good (but nowhere near Dreamworks levels). and Argentina is quite strong as well.

Overall, considering the number of markets its opened to, this is really good.

Yeah, pretty worrying for sure, especially in Russia. I can't possibly gross more than China's $9.5m....especially when if you minus all the markets with numbers $44.8m - $14.3m - $9.5m - $3.3m - $2.3m...leaves just $15.4m for the remaining 21 markets.

I think it probably grossed in the vicinity of $4-5m in Russia. Also Mesjarch's projection of Poland looks very close indeed.

Well, Shrek 4 looks like it has the early edge in Europe....South and Latin America could be neck and neck between the two...with Asia the deciding factor. I give the edge in Asia to Toy Story 3 all because of Japan. There's no way Shrek 4 will come within 40% of TS3's gross.

I read at BOM that TS3 was affected by World Cup in brazil. Theaters actually stop shows during brazil's game. But it is crazy on part of disney to release in brazil during wc.

According to official estimates TS3 made only 2.3 million on 550 screens in Russia.

I think football with 3 matches every day killed our box office.

I agree that TS3 has an edge in Japan but the scheduling for TS3 is very poor. It is opening against 2 juggernauts (local films) though it will still do better than Shrek there

TS3 could gross more in 2days than what Shrek 4 will in total. Shrek 4 is destined to be a massive bomb just like Ice Age 3 (dropped like 70% from Ice Age 2, and barely managed a Top 10 opening). A gross well below $10m is certain. Shrek 4 doesn't open until December, though.

So that's the reason. Shrek 4 is playing a better game at avoiding the WC than TS3

Terrible, Shrek in that market alone will build a $45m+ lead on TS3

I think UK and Japan will belong to the few major markets in which TS3 will outdo Shrek Forever After.

I will wait to see more European numbers before passing judgement. Though it looks almost certain at the momment that both Shrek 4 and Toy STory 3 will be crossing $450m. $500m is likely with $550m a get challenging target for both.

I don't see any of these two movies beating Alice In Wonderland

Toy Story 3: 135k
Wall-e: 128k
Monsters, Inc: 75k
Cars: 70k
Toy Story 2: 58k
Toy Story: 54k

The China number is completely wrong. Don't have the final actual yet, but the opening week's figure was in the $4-5m range.

In Russia TS3 opened with 377,870 admissions, that's down 45 % compared to UP (681,154)

Are these numbers just the estimates or the real figure. If what xiayun says is correct this could end up about 40m in 25 markets.
