Don't post here but found this article when ROTK was released from Box office Mojo

http://boxofficemojo.com/forums/viewtop ... sc&start=0
Quote:
Canadians are flocking to The Lord Of The Rings at a much higher rate than Americans, with Toronto leading the way.

1. The trilogy's third instalment, The Return Of The King, has set a box office record by hitting the $50 million mark in 33 days, faster than any other movie in Canadian history, Alliance Atlantis said yesterday.

The Canadian box office is usually about 10 per cent of the North American total, but The Return Of The King is at 16 per cent.

Famous Players' Paramount theatre in downtown Toronto is the top-ranking theatre in North America for the movie.

"Forty-one per cent of Canadians who went to the movies over the holidays went to Return Of The King," said Alliance Atlantis executive Jim Sherry.

Sherry expects it to climb into second on Top 5 Canadian box office list, soon passing The Two Towers' $56 million and Fellowship Of The Ring's $54 million. Titanic is Number 1 at $68 million and Spider-Man is fourth, with $52 million and The Phantom Menace at 50 million is fifth.

Since Jan 2004, the biggest films were

Spiderman 2 with 38 million.
Shrek 2 and DMC with 42 and 44 million
TDK at 51 million
and AVATAR CLOSE TO 96 million.

So here is my top ten estimate

1. Avatar 96 million
2. Titanic 68 million
3. Rotk 60 or so million
4. TTT 56 million
5. Fotr 54 million
6. Spiderman 52 million
7. TDK 51 million
8. TPM 50 million
9. DMC: 44 million
10. Shrek 2: 42 million

Yeah I post at BOM and looking at wikipedia found out the biggest 3-day weekends in history and this is a shock.

Spider Man bitchslaps TDK and HP4 is just unexplainable...

Biggest opening 3-day Weekends ever...

Spiderman 1 is the Champion still!!!!!!!!!!!
AFTER 8 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spider Man- 11.89 million (hand down the Champion)
Spider man 3: 11.69 million (+ million in Imax)
TDK: 10.53 million
Hp4: 10.12 million
New Moon: 10.12 million
Shrek 3: 9.8 million
Shrek 2: 9.78 million
AWE: 9.75 million (much bigger than DMC opening)
IM2: 9.62 million
Matrix 2- 8.83 million
Spiderman 2: 8.81 million (huge for a 5-day)
Hp2: 8.75 million
Da Vinci code: 8.72 million (2nd biggest film of 2006)
ROTS: 8.62 million
Alice: 8.63 million
Hp 3: 8.58 million
Rotk- 8.41 million (2nd weekend of 7 million!)
DMC: 8.36 million

Suprises is DMC low opening and AWE huge opening,
Spiderman 2 and ROTK still have the biggest 5-days opening ever.
The Strnegth of Shrek 2 and 3.
Hp4 opened as large as New Moon and sold more tickets than TDK on the weekend.
Spiderman 3 opened to over 2 million dollars more than TDK but ended almost 20 million less overall.

Bow down to the power of Spiderman 1.

That is just a ridiculous opening back 8 years ago.

ROTK wins hands down the biggest 2nd weekend ever of 6.8 million. However it is unknown what Spiderman 1 2nd weekend was. Spiderman 1 went to 52 million and ROTK to 60 million.

Avatar is the box office Champ and its 2nd,3rd and 4th weekend were as big as weekends for major blockbusters.

Finally news in Canada...

Avengers demolishes the opening weekend in Canada by 20% 15.5 million vs 12.9 million for DH2.

DH2 made 43 million so TA has a good chance at beating TDK 51 million gross and becoming the biggest hit apart from Avatar (at 96 million) since the Lotr films.
