So it's at 387M yuan with 4 more days to come this week :shock:

Any new big releases in China in upcoming weeks that could take away screens from Avatar? Or are cinema operators willing to keep Avatar playing instead of new movies?

The Spy Next Door is releasing on Friday, but given the reviews and buzz, I don't expect it to make much noise. Confucius next Friday is the big one and should take away a lot of 2D screens, but Avatar is not doing nearly as well on 2D anyway, so although it will take a hit then, I don't expect the drop to be large.

I think so it is still pretty new in China and with the buzz the movie had already got people will be going crazy to see this. I see really strong holds for next 2 weekends at least. Go China :thumbsup:

It'll be a regular weekend. :) I'm expecting another 130-140m yuan ($19m) for the weekend and a two-week total of 550m yuan ($80m).

It's pretty much official: Avatar is losing almost all of its 2D screens next Friday to Confucius. The order came from "the above" instead of being dictated by the market; so Chinese characteristics. Also Confucius' release scale could be on par or exceed The Founding of a Republic.

So what will the next order be from the authorities? Are they going to force people to watch Confucius to make sure it beats Avatar? So frustrating.

Well, they're now putting the words out that "Avatar is getting too hot and needs to be cooled down some." The coverage from nation-owned newspapers is also turning negative, focusing on the film's relatively weaker aspects like story and saying there is nothing for Chinese directors to be afraid or feel bad about.

So far about 60% of the gross has come from the 600 some 3D + 11 IMAX screens, while the 1,800 2D screens accounted for 40%. But cutting off those 2D screens means some smaller cities will no longer have access to the film, or at least it becomes difficult.

I have a question, xiayun. China only allows 20 foreign films to be released during the year, so are films that are released towards the end of the year at a disadvantage of being selected, or how does the process work exactly?

Wow this is so disappointing. Box-office politics? Is Avatar really a threat to the Chinese Box-office Markets? How well are these so-called articles affecting the people? I mean from what I can see if WOM is great people could easily see what is being done and start driving in loads to enter the Theaters :)

So who's laughing now, girls? Huh? See, that's exactly the point I wanted to emphasize. One word from the authorities - and the movie's prospects are gone. China can't be considered the true leader of the overseas markets until any movie's b/o can be so easily influenced. You need to really wake up.

I doubt it would have been harder in Russia to do something similar. If the right people would requested it.

Also, some movies were banned in Russia. Not to that extent, but it's possible.

One question: are you stupid or just completely ignorant? Distributors and theater chains are private companies, so the state has very little influence. It still has, but to a certain limit, just like in most other countries. Compared to China, where it's a matter of politics to have control in that area to the point where they have strict quotas on foreign pictures - 20 films per year. Wanna know what happened with the project of a law regarding percentage quotas on foreign films in Russia? It was trashed. Since you are a complete idiot, you probably do not know that one party has absolute majority in the parliament, but they still do not build walls for foreign films. In fact, there is practically no boundaries in this area.

And just to make it clear for a moron like you: BORAT WAS NOT BANNED IN RUSSIA, IT WAS SAFELY, LEGALLY RELEASED ON OFFICIAL DVDs. Federal Culture and Cinematography Agency just didn't certify it for the theatrical distribution (most countries have similar structures to certify films for public demonstration as well). If we had a functioning rating system, it would be rated X or something like that. But it doesn't work yet. And it's the only case like this. And it was a right decision: movies like Borat should be restricted. And the same thing happens in many other countries as well. It's a normal practice.
