Also if I remember correctly the original Titanic release of 1997 never made to China market, which means a little extra build up demand to see it on big screen.

It actually was released and made $44m back then (which I think was best all-time?).

I'll ask you the same question, what makes you think Titanic will do so much better internationally than other re-releases? Sure, it was the biggest ticket seller like ever but even if it makes 3 times as much as say Lion King, that wouldn't be that much.

The original release make 360m yuan in China back when very few films could even break 100m yuan total and held the record for 12 years before other movies could finally catch up due to the screen expansion and market explosion. The 18m admission number is still third all-time behind Avatar and TF3. And the movie is beloved; in China's popular douban site, it has an 8.9 average with 271,233 votes.

Well, Titanic pulled off impressive feats in pretty much every market. So should we expect a huge gross?

Seeing as re-releases never did particularly well internationally i'll rather stay conservative with my expectations. (if you can call like $400m WW conservative)

I don't see Asia contributing big bucks to the re-release. Just going on past data from The Lion King and other re-releases, I don't think Titanic will offer anything different that will force people to go watch it again.

Yes in the comparatively smaller markets Titanic might not be big, but I think China and Japan will be the exceptions for Titanic's re-release.

The Lion King only grossed 2.6m in South Korea. Beauty and the Beast only made $222,000 in Japan.

Why would the Titanic re-release be any different in China and Japan?

Dreamworks looks for loophole to scoop Chinese viewers

China says ‘Ni Hao, Hollywood!’

That is huge! Once the studio in Shanghai is completed (which should be pretty quick), watch out everywhere else. Kung Fu Panda 3...200 million in China? You know the government will promote the heck out of this once it happens.

The only question is if this becomes a domino effect. Will other Hollywood companies, even studios hope to get in on the action? Interesting times ahead.

Because Titanic did $201mio in Japan and $44mio in China in 1998!

So? Beauty and the Beast made $222,000 with its 3D re-release in Japan. And with disappointing grosses in other Asian territories for 3D re-releases so far this year, I fail to see why or how Japan will suddenly explode with this 3D re-release when it has already displayed disappointing results for other 3D re-releases.

China I can kinda understand since people will want to see it on the big screen for the 1st time now that they have the money but it's still not going to make an outrageous sum. More like 20-25 million IMO.

Do we even know how successful TLK and B&TB where in Asia upon initial release?

http://www.deadline.com/2012/02/reactio ... agreement/ - this agreement turns China into de-facto the most important foreign market. I didn't expect them to remove the barriers, because it wil automatically hit local production. I don't know how China will push its movies domestically with so much competition from US pics...

That is a great news (US-China aggrement), does 50% more means we will see 30 movies from 20 movies now?

Ok, so they mention that US studios get more % share revenues from this deal. Interesting.

Some more facts coming to light

- Will be called Oriental Dreamworks. The 3 Chinese companies (China Media Capital and Shanghai Media Group and Shanghai Alliance Investment) own 55% of the company while Dreamworks gets 45%.

- 330 million initial investment

- Will start operations later this year

- First release from this new joint venture to come in 2016

Under terms of the deal, China will allow in 14 high-definition releases in 3D and IMAX, in addition to the current quota of 20 movies annually. It will also allow studios to keep 25% of box office revenue – up from 13%.

China Opens Up Market to U.S. Movies

So 34 movies annually. That's great since we know that in the past, the studios were trying to push for 30 movies quota. Now, there's 34.

Once Transformers 4 comes out, studio gets to keep >50m. That's fantastic.

Could have a shot, especially with Valentine's Day helping this week's gross as well. The holds the past couple of weeks have been amazing and far better than any other holdovers.
