Re: Super Mario Bros. II (April 3rd 2026)
3 years of inflation will help. Also good that they kept the original release date.
Still think it will be big since families loved it but maybe will see a drop from the novelty wearing off of being the first real Mario movie (ignoring the 90s version).
HP2 drop from HP1: -17.3% gross would bring it to $475.5M
$400M+ wouldn't be that surprising here again. Mayb $450M as an early guess.

With Yoshi in the mix this could out open the first.

This will probably at least match the original opening.

The wording makes me think it might be a non sequel like Baby Mario and Yoshi or something

Based on the end of the original Super Mario Movie (spoiler alert don't keep reading) its probably bringing in Yoshi.

I hope they go for a 3 day weekend. It will probably get the record then. may be as high as 250m if they can up the ante this time around.

They splurged on all the highlights in the first one. But yes, Yoshi and Donkey Kong storylines would be great. Perhaps some callbacks to Super Mario Bros. 2 or Mario Galaxy as well.

Re: Super Mario Bros. II (April 3rd 2026)
Still feels like this sequel will be an event despite the novelty of the first one. If they bring their game up with characters people want to see, Minecraft's $150M+ OW, Sonic 3's $236M total, clearly there's still a lot of interest in these and it's only going to grow.

What character/gimmick can they introduce though? I know Yoshi was teased, but I don't think there's too many others that will boost the numbers. Maybe Rosalina or Daisy?

Yoshi, Wario, Daisy, Rosalina, Piranha Plant and Bowser Jr are the remaining characters that are in Smash Bros but not the first movie. I'd imagine they could also add more Nintendo characters that aren't likely to get their own movie like Kirby.

Yoshi is the moneyshot.
This is not that far away, 3 years feels short compared to Disney animation/Pixar sequels.

You'd think this is still good for $450m+

Re: Super Mario Bros. II (April 3rd 2026)
Since it has a Friday release this time, I'm calling it as the first animated film to open over $200M. Though I don't legs will be as good this time around so it'll probably wind up with a similiar total. Next year is gonna be a very tight race for #1 domestic.

Re: Super Mario Bros. II (April 3rd 2026)
It is strange how it's only taken a couple of years for the MCU to feel like George Foreman going in for another bout at 45. I mean, Doomsday will still do well relative to all other films, let's not get ahead of ourselves, but it isn't the can-do-no-wrong new sensation on the circuit, and it's only been 5 years or so since it was top dog. Things change fast
