Post Re: Japan Box Office: Your Name Breaks $125m; Aiming For $20
Also, the Japan Box Office appears to be on the rise again. There have been a lot of various records or long-streaks broken the past couple years; 2016 is looking to be the biggest year ever in terms of revenue, and the most-attended year since 1974.

Yearly admissions have also increased for 5-consecutive years, too. Japanese films continue their near decade long streak of dominance by representing two-thirds of the market.

Your Name is officially 10 million admission. Just saw it on ANN.

Corpse, how is Your Name compared with Spirited Away and Harry Potter in reaching this milestone? 2nd or 3rd?

It's nice to see such a key market thriving after stagnation looked imminent (at least for imports) in the mid-to-late-00s.

It's the third fastest film to ever reach 10 million admissions.

Fastest to 10 Million Admissions:

31 Days - Spirited Away (2001)
35 Days - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
39 Days - Your Name. (2016)
40 Days - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
41 Days - Ponyo (2008)
44 Days - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
47 Days - Frozen (2014)
48 Days - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)
66 Days - Princess Mononoke (1997)
67 Days - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
71 Days - The Last Samurai (2003)
157 Days - Avatar (2009)

There are five other films that sold 10 million admissions, but the day in which they reached the milestone is unknown: Tokyo Olympiad (1965), Titanic (1997), Emperor Meiji and the Great Russo-Japanese War (1958), Godzilla vs. King Kong (1962), and E.T. (1982).

Definitely. The rise in admissions, which are beginning to reach the levels of the 1970s once again, along with rising ticket prices that had remained stagnant for decades, should result in some substantial box office earnings in the coming years if the trend continues. We're beginning to see it now with many various records and decade(s) long streaks being broken.

And not only have yearly admissions increased for 5-consecutive years, but there are more theaters in Japan today than since 1970, and the most screens since 1969.

There's been a rapid growth in new theaters going up in recent years. By comparison, there were 1,123 theaters back in 2000; 1,954 in 2005; 2,996 in 2015. The number of theaters exceeded 3,000 this year.

Your Name. will easily repeat for a seventh week, then there are three new wide openers that will do moderate business: High & Low: The Red Rain, Jason Bourne, and Good Morning Show.

I'll post the Weekend Forecast tomorrow evening. TGIF!

This weekend is the follow-up to a weekend that benefited from having the 1st of the month (nationwide discount day) fall on it, so drops are going to be much higher than normal as a result, especially in terms of admissions. Monday is also a holiday, Health-Sports Day, so weekend business could be spread out over the next three days.

>Your Name. will, unsurprisingly, repeat atop the box office for a seventh-consecutive weekend, however, there are signs now that its performance has begun to slow to normal levels. It's going to experience its worst drop-to-date so far, but a drop in the low/mid-30s would still be pretty good after a past weekend having a discount day occur over it.

Its seventh weekend will still be among the top 10 highest of all-time, likely landing somewhere between 7th-9th on the list. Its accumulative total will continue to be higher than almost everything as it'll become the 11th highest-grossing film of all-time after Sunday with a total around ¥14 billion, ahead of every past film besides Spirited Away and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone after seven weeks.

From there, we should have a close race for second place this weekend:

>Jason Bourne earned itself a solid first day yesterday, bringing in around ¥100 million ($1 million). Its pre-sales for Saturday are also good, so an opening weekend of ¥300 million or more looks reasonable, bringing its three day total likely above ¥400 million ($4 million).

An opening weekend of ¥300 million+ will be much higher than the last film, The Bourne Legacy (75% higher), and will be on par with The Bourne Ultimatum's ¥325 million opening, The Bourne Supremacy's ¥324 million opening, and The Bourne Identity's ¥302 million opening, respectively. The Bourne franchise isn't a blockbuster series in Japan, but it's clearly very, very consistent with all the Damon films opening within 7% of each another.

>High & Low: The Red Rain has some impressive pre-sales, down only about 20% compared to the first film in the supergroup's multimedia project from July. I figured the dropoff would be notably higher, and while I think it'll end up falling behind further than 20%, the fanbase is still supporting this one quite diligently.

It is at $125m having just made $5m for the weekend. How the hell will it make $200m in total? Are there lots of holidays coming up or something?

It was at $125 million last weekend (coming off a $7.9 million weekend). It'll be around $135/136 million coming off a $5 million or so weekend after this weekend, based on my estimates. Monday is a holiday and it'll probably add close to $3 million, so it might hit $140 million then. I've been underestimating its running total each week by $1/2 million for awhile, too.

$200 million is looking very difficult now though, I agree, but going with sizable drops of 30/35% for the remainder of its run, it's still likely to reach $170 million or more. Remember that weekdays are often nearly on par with, or sometimes greater than, weekends in Japan. ~54% of Your Name's current total has come from weekday earnings.

Well, $200 million may still be in play. I just noticed that it added 47 theaters this weekend, up 16% from the initial count that it's been playing in since opening.

Film picking up more theaters is very, very rare in Japan. Typically, the number of theaters any film opens in Japan is their peak count. Films do, however, maintain all their theaters for months in the market (unless they completely bomb), with only adjustments to the showtimes and screen size being made throughout their release.

Your Name.'s updated count now is on par with the usual major release (~350 locations), and while the majority of the locations added are in rural prefectures... I imagine it'll give the film a further boost for a while, even if it's relatively small given the interest it's generated.

Weekend Estimates will be up soon.

I, pleasantly, underestimated Your Name. this weekend. The additional theaters it gained were very beneficial, and it just managed to hold very well in general.

And Jason Bourne may have delivered the best debut of the franchise.

And having likely exceeded ¥14 billion with over 10.8 million admissions after Sunday, it's become the eleventh highest-grossing film of all-time and the fifteenth most-attended film of all-time after seven weeks in release.

>Jason Bourne was able to get the Bourne franchise back on track after a disappointing showing from The Bourne Legacy, and may have delivered the biggest debut for the franchise yet. The debut here keeps the Damon films on an extraordinarily consistent level at the box office.

Opening Weekends:
¥335 million - Jason Bourne (Estimate)
¥325 million - The Bourne Ultimatum
¥324 million - The Bourne Supremacy
¥302 million - The Bourne Identity

>High & Low: The Red Rain comes in somewhere between 25-30% lower than July's High & Low: The Movie, but having retained 70% or more of the more hyped first film's audience from the supergroup is quite impressive.

By the look of it, YN for me seemed to be the type of movie with long legs.

I doesn't have the highest of weekends (provides it's only sixth ,all time, this weekend), yet it is third in overall gross, means good amount of bucks is accumulated during weekdays.

Approx. 53.8% of its total has come from weekdays. And after 46 days in release, only 3 of them have been holidays (three Monday holidays). So for the weekdays to represent over 50% of its gross with very minimal holiday support, much less support than every other film on its level, is a notably remarkable achievement.

I've been doing some projections before the actuals are released (I won't be able to post them until tomorrow, though), and I see a comfortable path to ¥18 billion ($175 million) and 13.7/13.8 million admissions. That'd make it the seventh highest-grossing film of all-time, and the ninth most-attended film of all-time. It could, of course, go a bit higher, but we'll have to wait and see, but that projection is pretty safe.
