Post Re: Japan Box Office: 'Your Name.' Now Aiming For $200 milli
I'm not very familiar with Girls und Panzer, but I'm sure the success of the film will allow them to produce additional material.

The budget for anime films is around ¥500 million, I believe I read awhile back. Unless, of course, they're from a high-end animation studio that still practices hand-drawn animation as their primary method, then the budgets can grow to much higher heights (several billion).

Post Re: Japan Box Office: 'Your Name.' Now Aiming For $200 milli
Quick overview of how the weekend is looking based on Saturday's results:

Your Name. is performing in-line with my forecast yesterday, so it's on track for one of the top 3 biggest fourth weekends of all-time with ¥950 million or so, but it still has a fair chance at the biggest fourth weekend record if Sunday delivers (it needs a 14% drop or better to claim the record). Its fourth weekend is also on track of beating its opening weekend, too, keeping its opening weekend as its lowest weekend-to-date so far.

A Silent Voice did very well for itself, easily capturing the second place position by selling through ~58% of its available tickets. As long as it doesn't fall too much on Sunday, I believe it'll comfortably come in above ¥200 million ($2 million) and on just 122 screens to score the best debut of the weekend.

Rage is performing as expected and should open near ¥200 million ($2 million); whether or not it reaches that mark will depend on its audience breakdown (if it skews too old, it'll come in below the mark).

The BFG is the only film that's disappointing even beyond the initial low expectations. It settled for a distant 8th place start on Saturday, and unless it happens to be skewing very young (possible since its morning/afternoon > evening/night) which could give it a significant boost on Sunday, it's probably going to miss the ¥100 million ($1 million) mark for the weekend. If it misses ¥100 million, and debuts in 8th place, I'd consider that a bomb rather than simply disappointing.

All the holdovers performed mostly as predicted. Gods of Egypt is really the only one that'll come in well-below the forecast (misleading pre-sales) in its second weekend. The Secret Life of Pets also came in below expectations for the day, but I expect it to have a strong Sunday with Monday being a holiday this week to counter the poor Saturday.

Alright, so Your Name. just achieved its biggest single day ever, increasing 4% over last Sunday and selling through ~59% of its available tickets for the day. It was down ~16% Saturday-to-Saturday, so a weekend increase isn't likely, but a single digit drop is almost guaranteed and it may even come in 5% or less.

It "only" needed a 14.3% drop to beat Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's fourth weekend record, and that record is all but assured now. Also, it's looking very likely that Your Name. will become the first film to ever achieve a fourth weekend above ¥1 billion as well.

Overall, Sunday was very strong this week. I'll post the Weekend Estimates in a couple hours.

>Your Name. effortlessly retains its hold atop the box office and based on estimates; finally breaking Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's 15-year highest fourth weekend record, and by possibly over 10%! Its fourth weekend is also expected to comfortably stay above ¥1 billion, making it the first film to ever achieve a fourth weekend above ¥1 billion, too. Its fourth weekend remains higher than its opening weekend, too, making it only the second film on record (Frozen being the other) to achieve that feat as well.

Makoto Shinkai's incredible high-praised triumph continues along with its unprecedented performance, and its two-week total of ~¥8.4 billion could end up being the second-highest two-week total of all-time, only behind Spirited Away.

Monday happens to be a holiday, the film's first (its doing these insane numbers without any holiday support so far), which should brings its total very close to ¥9 billion ($90 million), thus making it the second-fastest film to reach the mark (behind Spirited Away). I said it'd probably reach ¥10 billion on either its 30th or 31st day in release, but it's outpacing that projection and could exceed the mark on its 28th or 29th day instead. If it does it in 28 days, it'll be the second-fastest film to achieve uber-blockbuster status, behind, again, only Spirited Away.

>A Silent Voice debuts in second place, and did so by only playing at 122 locations. An opening around ¥250 million ($2.5 million) is likely, possibly a bit higher since small-scale anime films sometimes boast high avg. ticket prices, making this another big success in Shochiku's near-limited release anime film list.

>Rage experienced a healthy Sunday increase, so I'm pretty confident it'll come in above the ¥200 million ($2 million) mark now.

>The BFG also enjoyed a nice Sunday bump, and it should be enough get it over the ¥100 million ($1 million) mark for the weekend, but not much higher. Overall, I'd still consider the film a bomb for Disney in the market.

Wow. Simply amazing, and I imagine the added buzz it gets from having the record 4th weekend will propel it even more.

I love Japan. How a fourth weekend of just $10.5m ($82m cume) is a guarantee for a finish over $200m. Ha ha. In the US, that would not even guarantee a finish over $100m.

Thanks!

Weekend actuals will be delayed until tomorrow due to the holiday, but I'll post them when they're available.

I'll be posting Your Name.'s Monday estimate a little later, and due to it being the film's first holiday since opening, it actually achieved its biggest day-to-date (its 25th day in release). It's a pretty staggering figure, selling through 63% of its available tickets for the day.

Boom! Monday, the 19th, was the first holiday since Your Name. debuted, and boy did it explode for the day. In terms of admissions, it was the biggest day yet for the film (its 25th day in release), and should have propelled it above ¥9 billion as well. Only one other film has reached ¥9 billion faster, and that was Spirited Away.

Weekend Actuals will be posted tomorrow.

when will your name be available here, please, new year? end dec?.... with this much hype, it feels so distant.

and with these results, is it certain by now what movies would Your Name be compared week-by-week? Spirited away would be too much, but Frozzen, Titanic, Howl, Mononoke should be comparable.

I'll post updated international dates when they're available. :)

I'll do some week-to-week comparisons with Your Name. against Frozen and Howl's Moving Castle soon. I'll probably even use Spirited Away, since that's the only film that's outpacing it now and might be the "closest" comparison by the time its run is over. Its actual is up slightly over estimates, confirming its fourth weekend record and second-highest two-week total of all-time.

Weekend Actuals will be posted soon.

>Your Name. effortlessly retains its hold atop the box office and based on estimates; finally breaking Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's 15-year highest fourth weekend record. In its fourth weekend, it stayed above 800,000 admissions once again, and also becomes the first film to ever achieve a fourth weekend above ¥1 billion, too. Words are becoming hard to come by to describe this film at this point.

Also, after Monday, the film exceeded the ¥9 billion ($89 million) milestone on 6.98 million admissions on its 25th day in release, making it the second fastest film to ever reach the mark behind, again, only Spirited Away. It's on course to reach the ¥10 billion ($100 million) milestone on Thursday, only its 28th day in release, which will make it the second fastest film to reach the uber-blockbuster milestone after, again, only Spirited Away (25 days).

There seems to be no slowing down for this film (seriously, expect to see it at #1 until sometime in November), and the fact that it's outpacing everything other than Spirited Away with minimal holiday support (only two days worth after this Thursday) is absolutely incredible, and is without a doubt the most impressive run in Japan of all-time. Expect this one to likely exceed ¥20 billion ($200 million).

>A Silent Voice debuts in a distant, but strong, second place. The anime film is also playing at just 120 locations, making this debut all the more impressive. And since Monday, the film earned ¥411,126,450 ($4.0 million) on 310,083 admissions. Shochiku has another small-scale anime success on their hands here, and I wouldn't rule out a potential run at ¥2 billion ($20 million).

>Rage settles for a fourth place start, but with a debut over the weekend frame comfortably above ¥200 million, and a 3-day total of of ¥348,438,000 ($3.4 million) on 264,722 admissions across 324 screens after Monday, this opening is perfectly acceptable.

>Shin Godzilla is back to enjoying its incredible holds and remains in the Top 5 in its eighth week of release. After Monday, it has exceeded ¥7 billion ($68 million) on 4.87 million admissions. There is now a strong likelihood that the third reboot of the Godzilla franchise is going to reach ¥8 billion ($75 million+) with over 5.5 million admissions... this result is truly exceptional, as it's going to become the most-attended Godzilla film since 1965, and only the second domestic live-action film to reach ¥8 billion since 2009. Toho could not have hoped for more from their third reboot of their most-iconic creation.

>The BFG bombed. There isn't much to really say here other than how disappointing this number is, especially with Spielberg at the helm.

>The Secret Life of Pets quietly exceeded ¥4 billion over its sixth weekend, and probably last weekend in the Top 10. In doing so, it's only the second non-Disney/Pixar, imported animated film, to ever reach that milestone (the first being Minions).

Thanks, Corpse.. And by your explanation i imagine how crazy it would be if Your Name actually end 2nd most-grossing film after Spirited Away. No doubt the most impressive movie in a long time, when added the vacation schedule thing and also the fact that simply NO ONE expect this in the beginning.

I was wondering the same thing. Is it guaranteed that there won't be any surprise?

It's not a 100% certainty, but I'd say it's greater than 50% that it stays at #1 through November. Spirited Away and Frozen achieved 16 weeks at #1, and Your Name. is besting both films over the weekends; and while its trailing the former in total after four weeks, it's outpacing the latter. And looking at the schedule for the remainder of the year, 14 weeks seems quit doable.

The only two films I see on the schedule with a legitimate chance of dethroning it are Death Note: Light Up the New World on October 29th, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them on November 23rd.

Death Note relies heavily on garnering the attention of the franchise's fanbase, and could struggle to appear as a true follow-up to the main series of films. Your Name. could still be earning over ¥500 million that weekend, which won't be easy to beat. And Fantastic Beasts is a rare Wednesday release, so its opening weekend will be deflated. Also, being a spin-off without any of the principal cast from the Harry Potter films in prominent roles, I question how well it'll perform. Films that take place outside of the main franchise, especially if that franchise has concluded, generally disappoint in Japan.

Your Name. (Path to the All-Time Top 5; ¥20 billion+ [$200 million+])

Weekends:
08/27-28: ¥930.0 million ($9.2 million), 0, ¥1.278 billion ($12.6 million) [43% capacity]
09/03-04: ¥1.160 billion ($11.2 million), +25%, ¥3.872 billion ($37.6 million) [55% capacity]
09/10-11: ¥1.134 billion ($11.1 million), -02%, ¥6.286 billion ($61.2 million) [54% capacity]
09/17-18: ¥1.076 billion ($10.5 million), -05%, ¥8.534 billion ($83.0 million) [51% capacity]

*6th Biggest Second Weekend of All-Time; 9th Highest Two-Week Total of All-Time
*3rd Biggest Third Weekend of All-Time; 6th Highest Two-Week Total of All-Time
*Biggest Fourth Weekend of All-Time (NEW RECORD); 2nd Highest Two-Week Total of All-Time

Weekdays:
08/26: ¥348.0 million ($3.4 million), 0, ¥348 million ($3.4 million)
08/29-09/02: ¥1.434 billion ($13.9 million), +412%, ¥2.712 billion ($26.5 million)
09/05-09: ¥1.280 billion ($12.5 million), -11%, ¥5.152 billion ($50.1 million)
09/12-16: ¥1.172 billion ($11.5 million), -08%, ¥7.458 billion ($72.2 million)

Ongoing Weekday Estimates (09/19-23):

09/19: ¥571 million ($5.6 million), +157%, ¥9.104 billion ($88.6 million) *Actual*
09/20: ¥175 million ($1.7 million), -04%, ¥9.280 billion ($90.3 million)
09/21: ¥240 million ($2.3 million), -03%, ¥9.520 billion ($92.6 million)

% changes versus same day/week last week.

09/22 is a holiday, and as expected, Your Name. is doing incredible numbers for the day so far. It's likely to earn over the ~¥480 million (around $5 million) it requires to exceed the ¥10 billion milestone today, which will make it the second fastest film (28 days) to reach that milestone.

It'll become the only non-Miyazaki domestic animated film that's ever reached that milestone as well, so an announcement from Toho tomorrow is incredibly likely.

I cant stop being amazed with Your Name.
In 27th day, a daily week day number could achieve 240 million! That's crazy. Probably since today is a holiday factor.

I am curious about how Sen to Chihiro performed back then, so I did a quick browse on Animenews network's archive. Found that the film did lost its throne during the 12th weekend. While being back to number one at the following week, this mean Sen to Chihiro only manage to sit on top for 11 consecutive weeks. So, if your prediction turns out to be accurate, 14 week consecutive is probably the only one. Haven't done research on Frozen though. From the 16 weeks, how many weeks were consecutive.
