Not a fan of Pixar (I laughed hard when Jeffrey said that 2D animation wasn't dead for Di$ney). I hate all of their movies, except The jungle book and A bug's life. The alliance betweet Ghibli and Di$ney was a huge mistake from Ghibli: the only good job Di$ney did outside Japan is France. Now that Ghibli is dead, the only thing that could save anime for the big screens is Madhouse, Production I.G. and Studio 4C to continue to do their job. But... Now everytime a big anime goes on the big screens, Di$ney puts a huge animated feature to beat it. I know it's business, but shame on them if the eradicate anime from Japan. And talking about Ricains, how much represents Asian cinema in USA? 0,1% But, you know, they can't read, or they can't read subtitles because they can't do two things at a time (when the rest of the world and the real cinema lovers can), nothing but a cheap excuse to cover the fact that the only "culture" they're interested in is theirs. |

I'm going to change it back to "Japan Box Office" eventually. I just needed more room in the thread title a couple weeks ago, so changed it to "JP". Sooo... I really underestimated the weekend estimates/totals this week. Which is a good thing of course. I was just slightly disappointed with some of the numbers yesterday, but definitely not now. I'll post the Weekend Ranking this evening. Work, work, work. |

Weekend Ranking (01/03-04) 01 (02) Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 3 02 (01) Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 3 03 (04) The Vancouver Asahi (Toho) Week 3 04 (03) Ao Haru Ride (Toho) Week 4 05 (05) The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Warner Bros.) Week 4 06 (07) Parasyte Part 1 (Toho) Week 6 07 (06) The Last: Naruto the Movie (Toho) Week 5 08 (08) Gone Girl (Fox) Week 4 09 (09) Princess Jellyfish (Asmik Ace) Week 2 10 (11) Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Drive & Gaim: Full Throttle (Toei) Week 4 >Big Hero 6 claimed the #1 spot from Yo-Kai Watch over the New Year Weekend. Disney Animation's latest grossed ¥665,414,100 ($5.6 million) with 505,074 admissions, up 30% over last weekend, bringing its running total to a very, very impressive ¥4,145,339,200 ($35.2 million) with 3,262,260 admissions after just 16-days in release. It has outgrossed almost every Disney Animation release already, and also surpassed Pixar's Wall-E over the weekend, too, leaving just their biggest films ahead of it. Many films drop-off quickly after New Year, but I don't see how Big Hero 6 doesn't gross, at minimum, ¥6 billion ($50 million), and should be able to get close to ¥7 billion ($60 million) or slightly more. >Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! drops to 2nd place, and while it's pretty frontloaded, it's still delivering big numbers. The film earned ¥506,237,200 ($4.3 million) with 431,265 admissions over the New Year Weekend, down 18% compared to last weekend. However, more impressively, its total is now up to a huge ¥5,424,234,000 ($46.1 million) with 4,913,797 admissions after just 16-days. This is much higher than estimates were suggesting, and with it exceeding 5 million admissions today (Monday), it just became the 3rd fastest film in history (behind 2004's Howl's Moving Castle and 2001's Spirited Away) to reach 5 million admissions. It has now outgrossed every Pokemon film, besides the first two, and it could still be on track to beat both of them, too. It'll definitely drop fast now that schools will be starting back soon, though, but it has reached such a huge number in three weeks that it'll be tough for it to miss ¥7 billion ($60 million+) I think. >The Vancouver Asahi saw the biggest New Year weekend increase, up 50% over last weekend. >Other New Year Weekend increases includes Parasyte Part 1 up 16%, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies up 8%; and Gone Girl up 4% over last weekend. |

Weekend Forecast (01/10-11) 01 (01) ¥392 million ($3.3 million), -41%, ¥5.15 billion ($43.7 million), Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 4 02 (02) ¥319 million ($2.7 million), -37%, ¥6.10 billion ($52.1 million), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 4 03 (--) ¥190 million ($1.6 million), 0, ST MPD: Scientific Investigation Squad (Toho) NEW 04 (--) ¥140 million ($1.2 million), 0, ¥200 million ($1.7 million), Psycho-Pass: The Movie (Toho Video Division) NEW 05 (--) ¥120 million ($1.0 million), 0, ¥145 million ($1.2 million), Taken 3 (Fox) NEW 05 (03) ¥73 million ($630,000), -44%, ¥970 million ($8.3 million), The Vancouver Asahi (Toho) Week 4 07 (04) ¥67 million ($570,000), -36%, ¥1.58 billion ($13.5 million), Ao Haru Ride (Toho) Week 5 08 (05) ¥54 million ($455,000), -40%, ¥1.40 billion ($11.9 million), The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Warner Bros.) Week 5 09 (06) ¥45 million ($380,000), -35%, ¥1.84 billion ($15.7 million), Parasyte Part 1 (Toho) Week 7 10 (--) ¥40 million ($340,000), 0, ¥40 million ($340,000), Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (Gaga) NEW The post-New Year weekend isn't kind to holdovers, so expect some hefty drops around 35/40% for most films. For the films that saw increases last weekend, drops over 40% could also easily happen. >ST MPD looks like a a typical mediocre January opener right now, unless it really picks up in the evening. Hopefully it can open close to ¥200 million, which should be enough for January to have a ¥1 billion film. >The Psycho-Pass movie is the most-interesting film to track over the weekend. It's directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro, known for the blockbuster Bayside Shakedown series, and it delivered a very impressive opening day yesterday (Friday), maybe above ¥50/60 million ($500,000). However, since it's only playing on 103 screens, it's more difficult to project, though I wouldn't be surprised if it's the top debut this weekend. >Taken 3 isn't doing well, but the franchise isn't big in Japan like it is in other markets. It's actually doing pretty bad at the moment, but I'm pretty confident it'll pull it together as the day progresses. |

Post subject: | Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (ST; PsychoPass; Take |
Mid-Day Report [02:30 PM], Usual Locations (~1/3 of Market), Saturday, 01/10/15 30,252 - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Week 4) 29,998 - Big Hero 6 (Week 4) 14,051 - ST MPD: Scientific Investigation Squad (NEW) 13,718 - Psycho-Pass: The Movie (NEW) 7,163 - Taken 3 (NEW) 3,966 - Ao Haru Ride (Week 5) 3,479 - The Vancouver Asahi (Week 4) 2,748 - Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (NEW) 2,292 - Aikatsu! The Movie (Week 5) 1,842 - The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Week 5) Yo-Kai Watch doesn't do too much after this point, since it skews so young, so Big Hero 6 will comfortably win the weekend. The fact that it's still beating/keeping pace with Big Hero 6 at the mid-day point is impressive, though, and the race between these two films could go undecided for several weeks. ST looks on track for 75,000/85,000 admissions for the day, so achieving the roughly 150,000 admissions needed to break ¥200 million over the weekend is doable, but not assured quite yet. *Fingers crossed* Psycho-Pass is doing very well in its near-limited release, but it's hard to say where it's headed for the weekend. Taken 3... eh. It might do 45,000/50,000 admissions for the day, so 100,000 admissions over the weekend (¥120-140 million) is possible, if an uphill battle. This is pretty much inline with the last film I believe, and last year's Non-Stop. |

If the estimate holds, it has a decent shot at ¥7.5/8.0 billion ($65/70 million). >Yo-Kai Watch also had a slightly better than expected hold, and this is a possible sign that it won't completely fall apart now that school is back in session. Its weekday business will be dreadful, like any film that skews very young, but its weekends look like they'll stay strong. It still has a chance of reaching ¥7.5 billion ($65 million+). >ST will need to be pretty underestimated, or a much higher than expected avg. ticket price to have made ¥200 million over the weekend. It's still a decent opening, though, and a total of ¥1 billion is possible. >Psycho-Pass saw a bit of a hefty Sunday drop, but still performed very, very well. It's only playing on 103 screens, barely wide, so the estimate has a lot of room for error. There is also the chance that its avg. ticket price will be quite high, so maybe it'll come in above ST for the weekend. >Taken 3 has the worst opening in the franchise, and if the estimate holds up, it's even lower than last year's Non-Stop. >The big drops for Parasyte Part 1 and Naruto makes achieving the ¥2 billion milestone even more difficult. Monday is a National Holiday (Coming of Age Day), so weekend results won't be available until Tuesday. |

After four weeks in release, including Monday, it's now grossed ¥5.72 billion ($48.6 million) with 4.50 million admissions. It has become Disney Animation's second biggest film ever, and if it keeps up this pace, it's likely to exceed ¥8 billion ($70 million+) and could make a play at possibly ¥10 billion ($85/90 million).< >Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! holds strong in second place, and is still ahead of Big Hero 6 thanks to it's record opening week, though it should be overtaken by the end of January. After four weeks, including Monday, it has reached a total of ¥6.54 billion ($55.6 million) with 5.93 million admissions. It's now ¥1 billion and 610,000 admissions away from overtaking the highest-grossing Pokemon film, further cementing the franchise's place as Pokemon's successor in Japan. It has surpassed Pokemon's recent merchandise sales, video game sales and TV ratings, so this was the final hurtle. Nothing before Yo-Kai Watch has been able to upset Pokemon across all mediums. It's also looking pretty good at reaching ¥8 billion ($70 million) at this point, which will put it over 7 million admissions and should rank it inside the Top 40 most-attended films ever.< >ST: Scientific Investigation Squad was the weekend's top debut, taking in ¥200,342,500 ($1.7 million) with 153,767 admissions over the weekend, and exceeded ¥300 million ($2.5 million) on Monday. The debut is sold enough, and it'll become 2015's first ¥1 billion earner.< >Psycho-Pass had a very impressive debut, playing on just 103 screens. It grossed ¥136,899,100 ($1.2 million) with 93,164 admissions over the weekend. This is much lower than estimates, but the near-limited release makes it hard to project these films. It'll probably be a bit frontloaded, but shouldn't have a problem reaching ¥500 million ($4/4.5 million).< >Taken 3 came in above estimates, grossing ¥120,666,200 ($1.0 million) with 93,101 admissions on 353 screens. This debut is nearly identical to Non-Stop's (1,149 admission difference) last year. If it behaves like that one though, it'll have poor legs and just cross the ¥400 million ($3/3.5 million) mark.< >Sin City: A Dame to Kill For missed the Top 10 in its debut, ranking 12th over the weekend. No figures have been released for it yet, however.< |

Post subject: | Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking; Charts Updating |
Toho was the #1 distributor in Japan for a 9th-consecutive year (2006-), with their films earning ¥72,965,406,502 ($694 million), up 8.4% over last year. This also marks their 4th year above ¥70 billion, and their 7th-consecutive year above the ¥50 billion mark: >2010 - ¥74,869,612,938 ($902 million) #1 Film - Arrietty - ¥9.25 billion ($111 million) >2012 - ¥74,135,772,802 ($882 million) #1 Film - Umizaru: Brave Hearts - ¥7.33 billion ($93 million) >2008 - ¥73,914,598,446 ($725 million) #1 Film - Ponyo - ¥15.50 billion ($156 million) >2014 - ¥72,965,406,502 ($694 million) #1 Film - The Eternal Zero - ¥8.76 billion ($85 million) >2013 - ¥67,332,892,704 ($686 million) #1 Film - The Wind Rises - ¥12.02 billion ($124 million) >2009 - ¥65,493,311,500 ($720 million) #1 Film - Rookies - ¥8.55 billion ($94 million) >2011 - ¥59,111,105,930 ($749 million) #1 Film - Kokuriko Hill - ¥4.47 billion ($57 million) Toho has been dominating the box-office since 2006, achieving a market share of 33-38% each year since then. Toho's yearly increase/decrease is usually similar to the overall yearly box-office increase/decrease, so if 2014 sees a similar increase, this could be the 2nd biggest box-office year of all-time behind 2010, or 3rd biggest behind 2010 and 2004. Full 2014 Results will released by the Motion Picture Association of Japan the last week of this month. |
