Post subject:  Re: Japan Box Office (2012): Weekend Forecast (I think?)

A few more details about the final installment in the Bayside Shakedown franchise have been revealed:

Quote:
It has been revealed that there is a new ‘Odoru Daisousasen‘ movie in the works! Although this news is exciting, it comes with some bittersweet news as well. The popular series that stars Oda Yuji is said to come to a end with this new movie currently titled, ‘Odoru Daisousasen THE FINAL‘. The production crew has already began planning an ‘Odoru Festival‘ to hype up the release of the final installment in September 2012. Oda, who has starred in this long running series for 15 years, commented on his anticipation by stating, “I will work hard to show the culmination of everything.”

The ‘Odoru’ series started in 1997 as a renzoku drama series and has brought excitement to many fans since then. The release of its second movie in 2003 made a total of 17.35 billion yen making it the record holder for highest sales by a live-action Japanese film. Movie producer, Kameyama Chihiro commented, “This will be the final installment of all of the dramas, movies and spin-off series“.

When the series started Oda was 29 years old, now he’s 44. Kameyama explained that, “After 15 years I wanted to break it off,” and also revealing that after discussing it over with the main cast they came up with the plan to “bring back criminals from the past in the third movie and depict an internal story before finishing the series“. Along with familiar faces Fukatsu Eri and Yanagiba Toshiro, newly introduced characters from the last film, Oguri Shun and Uchida Yuki will make a come back in the final installment.

As for the story, Kameyama explained, “There will be an incident that will serve as a fatal blow to the police force. It will depict Aoshima’s actions that are surrounded by his beliefs, even if it means giving up his police handbook. The story will enforce the idea that the power that moves the police force is the people at the crime scene“.

Shooting will begin in the middle of January and is expected to finish in April of 2012. Kameyama commented, “I want to finish Aoshima and Sumire’s love story as well” as well as “I want to use many media formats to make this more of a festival“. In order to make the September 2012 release more festive, Kameyama is coming up with more projects to hype the release.

Oda commented, “I”m a bit sad to hear that this will be the last of it all, but I will work hard to show off the culmination of everything.” The cast and the production staff are working together to make this upcoming ‘Odoru’ movie suitable for a finale.

If the play up the finale really well, the conclusion of whole franchise, there's potential here for huge Box Office results.

The only estimate that remains among Japanese Films is A Ghost of a Chance, which is still performing really well at the Box Office, barely outside the Top 10 after ten weeks in release (it may even resurface in the Top 10 this weekend based on some reports). And there is still a possibility for it become the #1 Japanese Film of 2011.

And the the only estimate left among Imported Films is Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Tracking ended with it above Black Swan, but probably not high enough to reach Tangled, so at least it's position should be final.

Very weak New Years Weekend, but I forgot New Years Eve is one of the worst days of the year at the Box Office, and since the Weekend BO is only Saturday and Sunday in Japan, it looks worse than it actually is. The last time it happened was in 2006, and drops ranged from 30-50% then too. I can't believe I overlooked that.

However, the last week of December though was very strong by looking at the totals, and if 2006 is an accurate comparison again, next weekend will see large increases.

I'll post the 2012 Box Office Charts when actuals outside of the Top 10 are released.

As of Jan. 3rd, M:I4 has grossed ¥3,239,286,300 ($42 million) on 2,547,890 admissions after 19 days in release.

So it added approx. ¥420 million ($5.4 million) on Monday and Tuesday (more than it's gross this past weekend).

Another M:I4 update. The film hit 2.76 million admissions, about ¥3.5 billion ($45/46 million) going into the weekend. It added almost $10 million to it's total from the past 5 or 6 days.

And Friends had a strong week, too, exceeding ¥1 billion ($13 million) before this weekend. It added about $3.5 million to it's total from the past 5 or 6 days.

Probably, or at least $65 million+ looks safe.

After checking a few comparisons, M:I4 should finish close to 5.5 billion yen (just over $70 million) with almost 4.5 million admissions.

And that should be good enough for a Top 5 Yearly Ranking depending on the performances of the other 4/5 billion yen ($50/60 million) tier films this year: (Always: Sunset on Third Street '64, Pokemon Best Wishes: Kyurem Vs. The Sacred Swordsmen, Resident Evil: Retribution, and Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo).

Below are the Weekend Estimates based on data from the usual locations.

The first percentage for each film represents the admissions compared to those on the Dec. 24-25 Weekend (estimated gross here), and the second percentage is the increase or decrease from last weekend, Dec. 31-Jan.1.

1. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Paramount) - 73.1% (350-360 million) +5/10% over last weekend, Week 4
2. Friends: Naki on Monster Island (Toho) - 93.8% (110-120 million) +10/15% over last weekend, Week 4
3. Fleet Admiral, Isoroku Yamamoto (TOEI) - 70.7% (100-110 million) +10/15% over last weekend, Week 3
4. Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie (Toho) - 59.5% (75-80 million) Even with last weekend, Week 7
5. Inazuma Eleven GO: The Movie (Toho) - 54.8% (65-70 million) Even with last weekend, Week 3
6. Kamen Rider X Kamen Rider (TOEI) - 58.0% (60-65 million) Even with last weekend, Week 5
7. Real Steel (Walt Disney) - 55.1% (60-65 million) Even with last weekend, Week 5
8. Tale of Genji (Toho) - 65.9% (50-55 million) +35/40% over last weekend, Week 5
9. Wild 7 (Warner Bros.) - 54.6% (45-50 million) Even with last weekend, Week 3
10. New Years Eve (Warner Bros.) - 34.9% (35-40 million) -35/40% under last weekend, Week 3
11. K-On The Movie (Shochiku) - 41.9% (35-40 million) -30/35% under last weekend, Week 6

As for the openers,

Magical Tree House (Gaga) is exceeding expectations and will break 100 million ($1.3 million), possibly debuting in the Top 3.
Fright Night (Walt Disney) is performing a little below expectations, likely missing 100 million ($1.3 million) and might barely snag a Top 5 debut (in 5th).

Post subject:  Re: Japan Box Office (2012): M:I-4 Nears $50 million

No. New Years Eve (probably the weakest day of the year at the Box Office) fell on a Saturday which caused everything to decrease last weekend since the weekend grosses in Japan are just the two days, Saturday and Sunday. I was confused by the drops too, but then I checked 2005/06 and the same thing occurred.

Weekend figures still haven't been released, but I'll update when they're available.

I don't have time to post the full weekend results at the moment (will when I get home tonight), but I'll quickly share M:I-4's numbers:

As of Jan. 9th, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol has grossed ¥4,056,423,250 ($52.7 million) on 3,168,538 admissions after 25 days in release.

$70 million is likely now, and there is a slim chance it could reach $80 million.

M:I4 should reach $60 million this weekend, but it's going to be a close race for first with Robo-G.

I just noticed M:I4 is the only Hollywood or Imported film in the Top 10, and will probably be the only one next weekend, too.

Weekend Estimates based on the Usual Locations (10/15% of the Market):

1. Robo-G (Toho) 225-250 million, NEW
1. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Paramount) 225-250 million, -30/35%, Week 5
3. My Way (TOEI) 100-110 million, NEW
4. Magical Tree House (Gaga) 75-80 million, -20/25%, Week 2
5. Fleet Admiral, Isoroku Yamamoto (TOEI) 65-70 million, -40/45%, Week 4
6. Friends: Naki on Monster Island (Toho) 65-70 million, -35/40%, Week 5
7. Kaibutsu-Kun: The Movie (Toho) 50-55 million, -35/40%, Week 8
8. Inazuma Eleven GO: The Movie (Toho) 50-55 million, -35/40%, Week 4
9. Tale of Genji (Toho) 40-45 million, -20/25%, Week 6
10. Real Steel (Walt Disney) 40-45 million, -30-35%, Week 6

12. K-ON! The Movie 30-35 million, -10/15%, Week 7

The data, or comparisons, for Robo-G are a little conflicting. One comparison would put it at 215 million (second place debut), the other 275 million (first place debut). And there is no data for Himizu.

10 The Third Stage: Live Viewing (Final Day) (Toho*) Week 1

*Not listed, but some showtimes I found has Toho. The "film" is one of those one-day only live events broadcast in a few theaters.

Warner

2 Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Paramount) Week 5
3 Magical Tree House (Gaga) Week 2
