WK is up by 500%

Very good, up to 8th place in its 26th weekend, its first week in the Top 10. The weekend figure itself isn't too impressive, but I imagine it'll gradually (or slowly) rise over the next several weeks/months before stabilizing.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 repeated atop the box-office once again, its 8th week of release. It jump many spots up the all-time charts too, so I'll have all those charts updated later this evening.

West Side Story debuted in second place, but sort of disappointed. Not a bomb, but certainly much less than an acclaimed musical from Spielberg that received many Oscar nominations playing on a high screen count (703) should have done. (Should have done *at least* 50% more.) I imagine it'll be really leggy, but it'll have to be especially leggy (requiring at least a 10x multiplier, but more like 15x) to reach a respectable total, so it'll need to win Best Picture, Best Director, etc., at the Oscars to get those type of legs.

Weekend Ranking (02/12-13):

01 (01) Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (Toho) Week 8
02 (---) West Side Story (Disney) NEW
03 (02) The Confidence Man JP: Episode of Hero (Toho) Week 5
04 (05) Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony) Week 6
05 (---) Usogui (Warner Bros.) NEW
06 (04) Ghostbusters: Afterlife (Sony) Week 2
07 (03) What to Do with the Dead Kaiju? (Shochiku, Toei) Week 2
08 (---) Drive My Car (Bitters End) Week 26
09 (06) Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (Sony) Week 3
10 (07) The Deer King: The Promised Journey With Yuna (Toho) Week 2

>Jujutsu Kasien 0 continues dominating the box-office, earning a further ¥226 million ($2.0 million) on 159,000 admissions over its eighth weekend, bringing its 52-day total up to a mighty ¥11,087,591,410 ($99.9 million) on 7,999,569 admissions. It climbed a very impressive 7 positions up the All-Time Chart (34th up to 27th) over the past week.

There is one (presumably) final giveaway promotion starting on February 19th, so it won't be slowing down for a decent bit longer. A total above ¥12 billion (~$108 million) and ~8.6 million admissions is pretty much guaranteed, though I think we can expect a finish a little closer to ¥13 billion (~$115 million+) and ~9.3 million admissions.

>West Side Story debuted in second place, earning ¥137 million ($1.2 million) on 91,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 703 screens. And since Friday (which was a national holiday, so a bit inflated), it grossed ¥229,201,170 ($2.0 million) on 152,756 admissions. Certainly not a good start, and not far from being within bomb-territory. Given everything it had going for it (reviews, Spielberg, Oscar nominations, high screen count), it just should have opened much higher than this. I imagine it'll be leggy so won't write it off quite yet, but it'll need to win the major Oscars (BP, BD) to boost its run to get it to a respectable total. As of now, it'll just be aiming to reach the ¥1 billion ($9 million) milestone.

>The Confidence Man JP: Episode of Hero enjoyed a pretty good week (no weekend figures available), and has brought its total up to ¥2,239,212,360 ($19.5 million) on 1,620,956 admissions after 31-days. ¥3 billion remains off the table, but it's going to comfortably come in above ¥2.5 billion now, and may settle around ¥2.6/2.7 billion ($23/24 million) and ~1.9 million admissions. We'll see if they make an attempt to push it to 2 million admissions.

>Spider-Man: No Way Home also enjoyed a pretty good weekly result (no weekend figures available), and its 38-day total is up to ¥3,840,264,870 ($34.3 million) and 2,534,035 admissions. It surpassed Avengers: Infinity War to become the MCU's second highest-grossing film! Avengers: Endgame is well out of range, but outgrossing every other MCU film, and on track to become only the 6th overall Marvel or DC film to exceed ¥4 billion is still very strong. Not as high as it could have gone, but can't be disappointed.

>Usogui debuted in fifth place. No weekend frame figures have been released, but it earned ¥98,753,170 ($856,000) on 68,944 admissions on 339 screens. Poor result here, missing ¥100 million even over the 3-day.

>Drive My Car, it's finally here! After 26 weeks, an entire half year, it finally made the Top 10. Thanks to scoring multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, it expanded to its widest release so far (213 screens), and earned ¥30,796,940 ($267,000) over the past three days, bringing its 178-day total up to ¥454,695,030 ($4.0 million) and 333,170 admissions.

I expect it'll continue to expand a little more, especially if it can improve on its numbers from this weekend (which were...just okay) as it becomes more exposed to audiences during the award season. It'll be one to keep an eye on, especially post-Oscars assuming it wins Best Foreign-Language, but even more so if it surprises and wins Best Picture and/or Best Director.

I wonder if TOHO could try pushing it into top 20 all-time if it has good enough holds on its late legs. Assuming a giveaway weekend of ard 250-300M and then good 20% weekly drops all around it'd get pretty close.

Fourth (presumably final) giveaway promotion begins this Saturday for Jujutsu Kaisen 0. This time, they saved the best for last. It'll be a memorial booklet (24 pages) that will contain original unreleased drawings, as well as special cast interviews.

Distribution to the first 500,000 moviegoers will begin this Saturday (February 19th), and is available for all available format showings (standard, 4DX/MX4D, IMAX, and Dolby Cinema) while supply lasts.

I forgot the article and link where the budget was marked as ~¥100M but I think it's near ¥300M. Though, I will be looking for more sources.

I Fell In Love Like A Flower Bouquet on February 22. Douban ratings are excellent with 8.7, coming from ~175K users. I think we are going have bigger finals than Japan (¥3.81B)

Image

Drive My Car (12-13) : ¥50M (500% P.W.)
Encanto was ¥770M in 80 days (1 site)

I'll try to check too, but ¥100 million (~$1 million) is probably accurate. It's a Bitters End release, and they certainly don't have much to spend.

Japanese films generally have very low budgets, and ¥500 million (~$5 million) is about high as a regular production will go, but most independent studio releases (like Drive My Car) will be much less than that. This is why earning ¥1 billion, almost always twice a film's budget, is considered the commercial success mark in the market.

You get some films that approach/exceed ¥1 billion, and in very rare occasions some that go higher than that, but it's very risky. Out of control budgets is what caused even Studio Ghibli to fold, so budgets are kept very minimal in Japan. Even The Wind Rises, which made ¥12.02 billion, reportedly lost money.

Should be easily, yeah.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 remained atop the box-office this weekend, its ninth-weekend of release, by increasing ~38% thanks to its final giveaway promotion. I believe it's among the Top 10 Biggest 9th Weekends, which I'll have posted shortly. (EDIT: 12th Biggest based on Estimates.)

Uncharted debuts in a distant second place, basically bombing (or largely disappointing). Estimating that it came in below ¥150 million (~$1.3 million) and likely missed 100,000 admissions over the weekend. And since Friday, should have earned around ¥200/205 million ($1.7/1.8 million) on ~130,000 admissions or so.

+38% is pretty good considering last weekend was inflated by stage greeting. Would've been a >+50% otherwise, so, not bad at all. Top 20 all-time seems possible from here depending on how it plays next few weeks.

I need some clarification about Monster, Inc which was reported ¥9.49B in Eiga.com (https://eiga.com/ranking/20040120/) but it was revised downwards to ¥9.37B in All-Time Charts at 歴代興収ベスト100.

Again why Pokemon The First Movie was revised downward on Dec 2019 (From ¥7.6B → ¥7.24B)

Again, how did Spirited Away immediately gained ¥400M from ¥30.4B to ¥30.8B back in 2016.

One interesting article about Princess Mononoke (http://www.renya.com/ghibli/mononoke.htm)

Could do 30,000+ admissions, €375,000+ in one day... Some theaters will probably add further screenings on the weekend...

Check out the presales in a local multipex (3 out of 9 screens so far):

(presales started last Friday)

That's interesting about Monsters, Inc. I've actually never seen the ¥9.49 billion total before. My only guess is it was a typo on Eiga's article there just because I've never seen it anywhere else. Have you?

I've never seen Pokemon at ¥7.24 billion. It's at ¥7.54 billion (is that what you meant?). I do recall see it at ¥7.6 billion sometimes in the past, but it might just have been the case of sources rounding up on it. (I know if we round it'd be ¥7.5 billion, but since it was over that, they may have gone up to ¥7.6 billion). It's still common to see rounded figures in some news articles (think more non-movie based sources like Yahoo! or something) since most readers aren't too concerned over it.

Spirited Away's original gross was ¥30.4 billion, and that was its reported gross for a really long time. It eventually got updated to ¥30.8 billion following a re-release for its 15th anniversary, I believe. (And once more to ¥31.68 billion after its 2020 re-release).

Good article on Princess Mononoke. I'm pretty sure I've seen this years back, and it's where we got its opening weekend, when it hit ¥10 billion (day 44), and when it surpassed E.T. to become the #1 film all-time. Thanks for sharing it here, Kanroji.
