I do hope we get the Sat/Sun breakdown to see if it was up Sun/Sat in actuals.

Since they're essentially tied (99.97%), I'd bet on Sunday being just slightly higher since United Cinemas (third biggest chain) crashed Sunday morning. There were no reports of them being down on Saturday. Rural locations, not accounted for in the usual locations, also tend to be busier on Sundays versus Saturday.

But yes, a daily breakdown would be nice. Few films receive them, but given that this movie nearly beat the opening weekend record in a single day twice, both on Saturday and Sunday, and coming close to doubling the old record as a result, we might get it.

So it just made more money in a single day than Frozen II did in its first two days combined - TWICE. Phew.

Will this be the first time ever that a Japanese film was the #1 movie worldwide for a weekend? Assuming nothing big also opened in China. But if this legs out well enough it could also end up in the year-end worldwide top 10! Does the franchise have any big appeal outside of Japan yet?

This is also true, and why Sunday will probably be bigger than Saturday.

Correct.

The franchise is fairly new, debuting in 2016 in Japan (and actually concluding earlier this year, with the final volume being released in a couple of months), but it's only became recognizable by most outside the country I feel in mid/late-2019 because of the anime. The anime is definitely one of the biggest and most popular right now among Western audiences too, I believe. And someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm estimating that the manga has around 30 million copies in circulation outside of Japan now (and over 100 million with Japan included), practically all being from the past year.

So... I'd say it's certainly known by typical anime/manga fans at this point, definitely, but it's appeal outside of them outside of Japan (or maybe other Eastern markets) is probably questionable at best. General or casual audiences in the West seem to dismiss anime/manga and group them all into a niche category for some reason.

Can you do a projection for the gross of weekdays and weekend in next week? Really looking forward to it.

I'm going to do weekday estimates. But I don't believe projecting anything besides the numbers this weekend, and on a day-by-day basis, is going to be worth anything at all. Given it's unprecedented nature, making prolonged predictions or projections isn't going to be very doable under these circumstances. We'll all have to enjoy the ride rather than look forward to it ending.

As far as I'm aware, it's quite popular in asia in general, definitely very popular in China (season 1 is one of the most viewed series on bilibili).

Manga and S1 were popular in the west but I wouldn't expect much from there.

 That makes its record manga sales, such as doubling (more than doubling) the previous yearly record and being the fastest manga to reach 100 million (and other milestones before that) somehow even more insane and impressive.

And it was the last update of the weekend, too.

And to everyone: If you look at Sunday it appears that Demon Slayer died after 10PM on Sunday. That's true, but nothing unusual. Typically tracking a film after 9PM, let alone 10PM, on a Sunday isn't worth anything. Only a few theaters (and I mean less than 10, or even 5) are open after 10PM on Sundays, and only one or two are open after 11PM on Sundays.

The final Sunday update will be posted in about an hour, but it's going to be practically the same as the 12AM update. Might add a few more admissions.

And I'll be posting weekend estimates (with estimated daily breakdowns) shortly thereafter in the form of ranges again, followed by a slew of chart updates that show where these estimates (the average) place it. When I begin posting them, they'll be in quick succession (I work on them all at once).

Post subject:  Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books

Here's another crazy new record:

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, based on estimates, just its opening weekend by itself, could be bigger than the biggest Top 10 Aggregated Weekend ever. I'll post that chart, too, since this weekend will almost definitely be #1 on that chart when you add the other 9 films. But Demon Slayer might not need them.

Author:  Cynosure [ Sun Oct 18, 2020 11:37 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books

Hopefully the aggregated top 10 can top 4 billion yen.

I trust this will be the biggest market share for a single movie ever. It's common in other South-East Asian countries like South-Korea and China to see movies with market shares near or even over 90%, but I don't think it's ever happened in Japan.

Author:  Corpse [ Sun Oct 18, 2020 11:51 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books

Yeah, nothing is even near 90%. I don't believe anything has ever hit 80% for that matter, and would only expect a few instances of 70%+. 50-60% share is usually as high as a #1 film can go. I don't know much on this topic, but a higher share than 50/60% is really difficult to manage in Japan since opening weekends are much smaller, and holdovers much leggier, relative to most of the world. Big films can also thrive when released close together, too, so that makes it even more difficult for a film to get a crazy high market share %.

So, yeah, that just happened. The average theater saw 7,367 customers just see the film the past 2-days.

A lot of charts will be posted in the next half-hour or so.

Updated Estimates following Sunday's numbers:

Friday: ¥1.15-1.30 billion ($11-12 million) / 910,000-975,000 admissions.
Saturday: ¥1.70-1.95 billion ($16-19 million) / 1,325,000-1,425,000 admissions.
Sunday: ¥1.70-1.95 billion ($16-19 million) / 1,335,000-1,435,000 admissions.

Opening Weekend (Sat.-Sun.): ¥3.4-3.9 billion ($32-38 million) / 2,660,000-2,860,000 admissions.
3-Day Total (Fri.-Sun.): ¥4.55-5.2 billion ($43-50 million) / 3,570,000-3,835,000 admissions.

Slightly adjusted Saturday's estimated range since yesterday. And even though Sunday finished 0.04% (real number) behind Saturday at the usual locations, it came out slightly ahead when independent theaters are included. Therefore, I'm giving Sunday a very slight edge of Saturday, but the gross will more or less be the same.

And there's a decent sized range gap (about 13%) because of not knowing what the average ticket price will be until some official numbers are released. Now I'll begin working on the charts of various kinds to see where this opening places it, and will share them soon.

Biggest October Opening Weekends (1998-):

01. ¥3.4-3.9 billion ($32-38 million) / 2,660,000-2,860,000 [1100+?] - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020)
02. ¥548.0 million ($5.1 million) / 356,000 [359] - Joker (2019)
03. ¥544.0 million ($5.2 million) / 407,200 [410] - Suspect X (2008)
04. ¥529.1 million ($6.4 million) / 406,288 [394] - SP: The Motion Picture (2010)
05. ¥504.7 million ($6.4 million) / 390,102 [427] - Once in a Blue Moon (2011)
06. ¥500.3 million ($6.4 million) / 393,783 [412] - Fast Five (2011)
07. ¥498.9 million ($5.9 million) / 401,905 [589] - Knight and Day (2010)

13. ¥393.8 million ($5.2 million) / 318,283 [626] - Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
14. ¥392.9 million ($3.3 million) / 309,187 [348] - World Trade Center (2006)

Getting this one out of the way real quick because of how umm... yeah, just yeah. Its opening weekend is higher than the TOTAL GROSSES of all but three October releases. And the 3-day total will be higher than the TOTAL GROSS of all but one October release (Joker), and it might even beat that.

Wow Demon Slayer's OW is just insane (understatement). I didn't really think anything would interest me this year (Box office wise) ever since covid 19's outbreak.

Also I'm not sure how legit this tweet is:
https://twitter.com/Franspeech/status/1 ... 0655692801

but they have DS's gross (3 days) at $50.2m which converts to 5.2 or 5.3 billion yen matching the higher range of your estimate, Corpse.
