Both no.1 and 2 films have bad representation of clown, but I heard people in Japan dress like Joker a lot in Halloween.

Terminator Box-Office History

Opening Weekends:
¥1.097 billion ($9.5 million) / 786,000 - Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
>W/Previews: ¥1.456 billion ($12.6 million) / 1,043,267
¥592.1 million ($6.1 million) / 461,866 - Terminator: Salvation (2009)
>W/Previews: ¥1.021 billion ($10.6 million) / 799,653
¥515.7 million ($4.2 million) / 352,718 - Terminator: Genisys (2015)

Totals:
¥8.79 billion ($49.6 million) / 6.46 million - Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) #1 OS Market
¥8.20 billion ($67.9 million) / 6.00 million - Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) #1 OS Market
¥3.32 billion ($33.9 million) / 2.60 million - Terminator: Salvation (2009) #1 OS Market
¥2.74 billion ($22.0 million) / 1.91 million - Terminator: Genisys (2015) #2 OS Market

The Terminator (1985) earned less than ¥1 billion in distributor income when it was released, so it wasn't an initial success at the box-office (probably even considered a disappointment) and its gross is unknown. But it clearly gained a following (presumably on home video) given just how huge Terminator 2: Judgement Day was. T2 is still the 58th highest grossing film ever in Japan after almost 30 years; and T3 also ranks well as the 65th highest grossing film.

Terminator: Dark Fate debuts this weekend, so let's see if it can be more of a return to form for the franchise in the market. Japan has been the franchise's top OS market (well, 2nd for Genisys), but it's dropped off a lot. It's not going to suddenly jump back to T2 or T3 numbers, but surpassing Genisys and Salvation would be a nice accomplishment and it's not unreasonable.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Terminator Box Office History
Well, if it helps as a small point of evidence, but the 1987 OVA Black Magic M-66, an adaptation of a Masamune Shirow manga (creator of Ghost in the Shell) is pretty much a homage to the original Terminator, with a nigh unstoppable robot assassin, its victim and its protector

Also god, last week was not kind to Promare, went from 71 mil yen to 39 mil yen. I guess that propably shuts the door to 1,5 bil for good, unless there's another giveaway/event. Pretty nice that it had screenings in TIFF and the New Chitose Airport festival. Still, hell of a run, I'm so glad this movie pulled itself up from its bootstraps

Then again most of this year's standalone anime movies didn't do nearly as well...

It varies a bit by theater chain, but it looks to have done around 25/30% (on average) better on Friday. And its Saturday pre-sales appear to be around 40% stronger compared to Genisys.

I've been expecting a better debut for Dark Fates, and these numbers are pretty impressive, suggesting a ¥600/700 million opening weekend. So it looks likely to open higher than Salvation as well (in gross). Even if it does end up being as frontloaded as the previous two entries, it has a good chance of reaching ¥3.5/¥4 billion ($30-35 million) with a ¥600/700 million opening.

I'll have the Weekend Forecast up in an hour or so.

Terminator: Dark Fate appears to be bringing back in some of the old franchise fans, having opened somewhere around 25/30% higher than Terminator: Genisys on Friday, and it seems poised for an even better improvement on Saturday based on pre-sales. But not only does it seem very, very likely to open higher than Genisys, it also looks good to either match or beat the opening weekend of Terminator: Salvation by a bit as long as Sunday delivers.

Stampede is reported to earn 9.3 billion yen worldwide, I think this is highest for this franchise yet.

Also, I just notice that Z director (highest domestic of all One Piece films), and Broly director (highest domestic of all Dragon Ball films) is the same person, and now he handles both franchise's TV anime.
This achievement reminds me of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek and Star Wars success.

Not quite regarding its increase over Genisys. In 2015, not nearly as many theaters had their admissions reported in the usual location updates (e.g. only 148 locations for Genisys versus 262 locations for Dark Fate). That's where the 55% (now 57%) comes from.

When making comparisons at the reported usual locations (which was 35% of the market in 2015 versus the 70% today) with films released before 2016, I find it best to compare theater chain to theater chain. Doing this, the increase looks to be more around 20%. Still very good, and keeps it on track for a ¥600 million opening weekend.

Yeah, that looks good. The range is probably ¥260-290 million ($2.4-2.7 million), depending on its average ticket price. Genisys had an opening weekend average of ¥1,462, but it received a much wider 3D release, although other premium formats (like IMAX and 4DX) are more popular today, so I'm expecting Dark Fate to have a similar average.

Now, Sundays are usually stronger than Saturdays (almost always the case with holdovers), but some openers can stay flat or experience small decreases if they're frontloaded enough. Genisys dropped about 9% on Sunday, so something comparable could happen with Dark Fate, but I'm anticipating the better reception to keep it flat or give it a very small increase. Sundays in general have also become a bit stronger than they were just a few years ago.

Not too good, down a pretty alarming 14/15%. And due to this, it looks to have debuted around the same as Genisys (maybe even slightly less). This is still "fine", but showing such early signs of frontloading isn't good.

>Terminator: Dark Fate doesn't debut as high as early numbers were suggesting, and what looked like an opening weekend on track to surpass both of its predecessors, unfortunately turned into one that came in below them. The sixth film in the long-running franchise sold 328,321 admissions over the weekend frame across 810 screens; it sold 449,565 admissions since opening on Friday.

So... while this is 9% below the debut of Terminator: Genisys and 21% below Terminator: Salvation, the opening weekend really isn't that bad. It's not particularly good, but it's reasonable given the decline of the franchise. The early numbers and better reception (albeit barely so) just really misled projections. Look for a finish between ¥2.5-3.0 billion ($25-30 million).

>It: Chapter Two opened 47% higher than its predecessor last weekend, and while that percentage is impressive, it was expected to do a bit more given the breakout success (and strong reception) of its predecessor. I then said that it was unlikely to match the legs of the original, and would probably gross less. Well, I may have called this wrong because Chapter Two just delivered a great second weekend. It's still not likely to have the longevity of the original, but this hold will go a long way it getting it above the original's total. We'll see.

>Sumikko Gurashi: The Pop-Up Book and The Mystery Child really surprised over the weekend, and earned itself a solid fourth place debut (third in admissions), selling 104,000 admissions over the weekend on 114 screens; it sold 114,280 admissions since opening on Friday. As you can see, given the incredibly low Friday admissions, the weekend numbers themselves came in significantly higher than expected.

>The numbers for Re: Life in a Different World from Zero and One Night are estimates. I'll update them when/if their respective figures are released.

Has Terminator been front loaded through the week so far? You said there might be signs based on Sunday.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated! (11/1
Sunday being down ~15% compared to Saturday is pretty high, and can often be a sign that a film is going to be frontloaded. Not always, but most of the time.

Its weekdays have been pretty decent so far, and it's aiming to earn 70-75% of its weekend gross from Monday-Friday. Thursday and Friday could lower that range, but if it falls within it (or better, of course), I'd consider the first set of weekdays to be solid. ~90% or better is where adult driven films like this need to be targeting, but 70/75% is fine as long as the weekends also pull their weight.

Let me know if you understand that.
