So it's still a good wait then. I was thinking it'd come down with Deadline, Screen Daily or Comscore.

Is that an estimate for the 2 day or the 3 day ? That's nearly 1 billion yen so it seems a bit high for the 2 day but a bit low for the 3 day.

That number is right in the middle of uncertainty. That's ¥986 million right?

So either that's for the 3 day in which case it's disappointing because it's even less than what Resurrection F did.

Or its for the 2 day and then that would mean it's a higher opening weekend than Resurrection F not including what it made on Friday which would make it impressive.

I looked at previous Friday openers of the year and how the source reported their opening numbers, and the numbers given were always for the 3 day weekend.

https://twitter.com/ERCboxoffice/status ... 2385892352

https://twitter.com/ERCboxoffice/status ... 1404269568

And just last month :

https://twitter.com/ERCboxoffice/status ... 3803189249

So it's probably the 3 day number, unless the source operates differently with Japanese movies compared to American ones.

I was trying to find something like that for Conan because that opened on a Friday but I can't find anything.

I'm back. :)

English, or non-Japanese sources, almost always report 3-day totals instead of the traditional 2-day results as opening weekends in the market.

Don't be disappointed if Broly came in below Resurrection F. The last film was the final Dragon Ball Z film, and it featured the return of its biggest villain, Freiza. It was always going to be hard to beat that, even if this was the first Dragon Ball Super film, so coming close to/on par with its debut is certainly impressive for Broly, in my opinion.

I'm estimating a debut around ¥850 million ($7.5 million), and a three day total of ¥1.075 billion ($9.5 million). I'll have a list of how it fared at the usual locations, two-thirds of the market, to the other big openers of the past three years for comparison soon.

So you're still estimating $9.5 million even though a few sites including Screen Daily have come out and said $8.7 million?

Even Comscore are now saying $8.71 million.

$8.7 million is possible, but it'd require very low returns from rural locations, which isn't usually the case for animated films, especially Toei releases. And it'd also likely mean a lower than expected average ticket price. Basically, the odds are against a three day total of $8.7 million.

$8.7 million (technically $8.8 million) is what ¥1 billion converts to right now with the current exchange rate, and that's what I believe that figure comes from.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Dragon Ball Super: Broly Debuts
I thought once they gave these numbers then that was what they were. Where would they be getting that number from then? So even though they've said $8.7 million it might not actually be that way in reality?

Was Cynosure right in saying we should expect the actual figures at about 8pm Monday?

They are estimates, not actuals, and they can be a bit off. For instance they had Venom pulling $5.3M over the 3 day weekend when it did $5M.

Always be wary of initial estimates for international releases. I'm not saying $8.7 million is wrong, just that it's unlikely. Weekend estimates for films in countries that don't use the standard Fri.-Sun. frame, like Japan, can also vary a good bit when actuals are released.

I'm estimating around $9.5 million based on how dozens of other films have performed at a comparable number of locations (largely urban) versus their results from unaccounted for locations (largely rural), in addition to the average ticket prices of other films either from the same franchise, or similar franchises, with comparable showings. It's not always an exact method, but it's generally close.

Full weekend actuals are regularly in by 7/8PM (EST) time Monday evening, but figures for openers are in much earlier. The numbers for Broly should be released very early Monday morning, probably around 4/5AM (EST).

Yeah I forgot that these are still estimates. I'm getting mixed up on the days. Sunday is the estimates and Monday is the actuals. Right.

I was hoping it'd be over $10 million but seeing as I just thought it was $8.7 million then I'd take $9.5 million.

Let's wait and see what the actual is tomorrow. Of course, wanting a bigger opening than Resurrection F is understandable, but ultimately was going to be very difficult. A debut between Resurrection F and Battle of Gods should be considered good.

When do the holidays start? I remember the first week after Resurrection F came out was pretty boring but it picked up the next week with Golden Week.

When does that happen with this?

The first week of January, the 1st through the 8th, will be the strongest week. Next weekend (Dec. 22-23) and the Monday after may also be pretty strong. December 23rd is the last Emperor's Day under the current reign, and since it falls on a Sunday, Monday then becomes a national holiday (this can sometimes boost Sunday, too). Anytime a holiday falls on a Sunday, then that Monday becomes a holiday as well.

Christmas isn't a national holiday, so it doesn't really provide a substantial boost, but it's still typically stronger than a regular weekday.

So:

Dec. 17-21: Regular set of weekdays; normal grosses.
Dec. 22-23: Likely a strong weekend; not increases across the board strong or anything, but drops should be solid.
Dec. 24: Likely to be very strong, potentially equal to/greater than previous two days.
Dec. 25: Stronger than the average weekday.
Dec. 26-28: Regular set of weekdays; normal grosses.
Dec. 29-30: Likely a solid weekend, but will behave pretty normal.
Dec. 31: Weaker than the average weekday due to New Year's and the upcoming Bank holidays.
Jan. 01-03: Three of the strongest days of the entire year.; each individual day can match/exceed a weekend's gross.
Jan. 04: Stronger than the average weekday.
Jan. 05-06: A very strong weekend; increases for many films are likely.
Jan. 07: Stronger than the average weekday.
Jan. 08: National holiday and the final day of New Year; strong numbers likely to rival the first few of the month.

"The film sold more than 820,000 tickets and earned more than 1,050,000,000 yen (about US$9.26 million) in its first three days. Toei stated it anticipates the film will earn more than 5 billion yen (about US$44 million)."

So it has done over ¥1 billion, the same as Resurrection F. I wonder how likely that ¥5 billion is. Did they just come out with that number despite seeing it open the same? Might mean they think it'll have better legs over the holidays.

Actual:

Weekend: ¥813,000,000 ($7.2 million) / 639,000
3-Day: ¥1,050,805,000 ($9.3 million) / 824,205

The opening weekend (2-day) is slightly lower than I expected, especially since its admissions are higher than I expected, but the 3-day total was close. It was down 15% in gross compared to Resurrection F, but down only 11% in admissions.

It had an average ticket price of ¥1,272 over the weekend, which is actually down 5% versus Resurrection F's. The last film was the first domestic release to receive a premium format release, such as IMAX, so it was heavily promoted as such, so I suppose the decline in avg. ticket price isn't too surprising. Still, ¥1,272 is pretty much the same average as a regular 2D release, so clearly the 3D/4D/IMAX, etc. showings weren't very popular this time around.

As for Toei's ¥5 billion total projection, take it with a grain of salt. Domestic studios very often over-project to create more appealing headlines to create additional hype around their films, but they rarely gross said figure. For the time being I would presume similar legs as the last film, so a total of ¥3.5 billion is most likely with a slight shot at ¥4 billion if New Year delivers for it.

Other than Broly, this weekend saw...

Yo-Kai Watch: Forever Friends debuted in fourth place, failing to stabilize the franchise once again this year, down 37% compared to last year's film. The franchise has struggled tremendously in gaining a new audience once its primary pre-school audience outgrew it in just a year or two, which I suppose isn't surprising given Japan's declining population and such.

The Grinch debuted in a disappointing fifth place, but no figures have been released for it yet. Either way, the film certainly shows with this slow start that Japanese audiences may not be all-in on Illumination quite yet. The opening weekend is likely over 50% below any of their recent films in the market, and perhaps their worst debut since the original Despicable Me.

Bohemian Rhapsody experienced its first weekend drop to date, but was only down 15%, and its sixth weekend is still much higher than its opening weekend... It's not slowing down yet.
