When I joined BO Theory Corpse already left. I see everyone said 'From Corpse From Corpse' before posting data so I'm wondering what is corpse? Do they get box office number from an actual dead body?

:sideroll:

I was at BOT for some time, but it just takes too long posting basically the same numbers (lists/charts) on two forums. It's a lot easier and faster for me to post everything here (thanks to using BBCode); highlighting, in particular, was very time consuming at BOT. Then the users there, some of which also post here from time to time, can just copy or link my posts.

It's a good candidate. I doubt it competes for for the top spot, but a Top 10 ranking is certainly doable.

As for the weekend, One Piece Film Stampede is receiving the most seating on Friday, followed by The Lion King, and then Weathering With You (losing ~30/35% of its seating, which isn't bad against two big openers). One Piece is guaranteed to be huge out of the gate, so it's no surprise that most theaters are playing it on their biggest screens to begin. Depending on how the weekend plays out, I expect One Piece and The Lion King to be pretty close in terms of seating on Monday and throughout the Obon Festival holiday period, with Weathering With You being a close third.

And remember: more seating/biggest screens doesn't always result in a bigger opening weekend, just the potential of having one.

And I was expecting Aladdin to experience a likely collapse given Disney's release strategy in the market, but it's "only" losing 45/50% of its seating on Friday. This is high, of course, but it certainly could have been much higher (easily 60/70%+).

What is TS4's drop in seats?
With a pretty bad hold so far today they might be inclined to drop a lot of TS4 screenings.

Today's holds look bad because last Thursday was August 1st. The 1st of every month is national discount day across all major theater chains (40% off ticket prices). It's still a pretty good day though, basically on par with Tuesday's numbers across the board.

Toy Story 4 is losing ~35% of its seating on Friday. Not too bad. It'll enter Obon Festival with enough seats to take advantage of the holiday week.

Could The Lion King be the biggest opening to not debut at #1

That title will likely stay with 2015's Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!. It opened against Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but still opened above ¥1 billion. It was the first and only weekend in history to have two films open above ¥1 billion.

I could be wrong, but it doesn't look like The Lion King will be a huge opener (not ¥1 billion potential). Its early Friday ticket sales are fine, but they're definitely below Aladdin's. And its weekend ticket sales also look fine, but again, they don't look incredibly impressive at the moment, just fine/good.

And honestly, I'm not sure on what film will be #1 this weekend yet. One Piece Film Stampede will easily be #1 for Friday, but it could burn off enough demand today that may prevent it from opening at #1 over the weekend frame. It's still the favorite, but the franchise is frontloaded and this is the first one to open on a Friday. It's possible that The Lion King could still open at #1 if its backloaded. And Weathering With You is still in contention as well, I think, despite being in its fourth weekend since it should come in above ¥500 million, possibly even ¥600 million.

Isn't One Piece generally a HUGE opener with ¥1 billion potential? Though I guess with Friday opening it could prove to be a disadvantage but wasn't it the case in last two movies?

The last three One Piece films have opened above ¥1 billion, but they all opened on Saturday. Stampede would easily open above ¥1 billion with a Saturday release (it's celebrating the anime's 20th anniversary, too), but the Friday release this time around could prevent it from doing so. There haven't been many cases of Friday openings affecting the weekend business too much since it became the standard last year, but it could in this case since it's a frontloaded franchise during the summer vacation (granted, One Piece's audience skews older anyway).

It appears on course to have the biggest Friday of the year so far.

Yeah I looked back at some of the charts and the last two movies opened on Saturday. It will be interesting to see where this one lands in terms of opening, I am rooting for the record of ¥1 billion openers in an year

Surprised that TLK wont open above $1B. It's performing iver BatB in all major markets except UK. Already broke records in skme countries. The original was bigger tha BatB in Japan. Is it because of the talking animals (Jungle Book, Alvin and the Chipmunks)? Narnia was big

I've noticed that wikipedia articles sometimes claim that pre-1997 Ghibli movies were the biggest movies of their given years in Japan. How do they know this, and are lists available for these given years? I'm interested in 1988, kind of.

I'm not, even with its performance in South Korea.

Just didn't seem like something Japan would be obsessed with.

After Jungle Book disappointed, I'll be happy with anything over ¥5 billion total for the Lion King.

Narnia also had human characters. Even when you go back and look at the history of animated films, you'll find that those that feature talking animals (as their main cast of characters) have almost always disappointed in Japan. This is a key reason, besides the humor that just didn't translate, that Dreamworks Animation never really had a hit in the market.

The Lion King isn't disappointing like Dumbo or The Jungle Book, it just doesn't appear at the moment to be on the same level as other Disney live-action remakes (Alice, Beauty, Aladdin). And I say "at the moment" because it's very early to make this claim. It may not open as high as them, but it is opening right before a major holiday week, and if the reception is strong, it could turn things around. A lot of unknowns right now.

Some were. Some weren't.

All the early Ghibli films (Nausicca of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, and Grave of the Fireflies) disappointed at the box-office, but they established Ghibli (and Miyazaki) as household names thereafter, and went on to become among the studio's most successful on home video and on TV broadcasts.

Kiki's Delivery Service was the #1 domestic film of 1989, but the third biggest overall.
Only Yesterday was the #1 domestic film of 1991, but the fifth biggest overall.
Porco Rosso was the #1 biggest film overall in 1992.
Pom Poco was the #1 biggest domestic film of 1994, but the third biggest overall.
Whisper of the Heart was the #1 biggest domestic film of 1995, but the seventh biggest overall.

You can check http://eiren.org/toukei/ to look at the list of biggest films dating back to 1980. Just remember that the distributor income was the method of tracking films instead of overall gross (revenue) before 2000.

Surprised that TLK wont open above $1B. It's performing over BatB in all major markets except UK. Already broke records in some countries. The original was bigger tha BatB in Japan. Is it because of the talking animals (Jungle Book, Alvin and the Chipmunks)? Narnia was big

Does this make Zootopia the most successful talking animal movie in Japan? Other than Finding Nemo, I guess.

Oh very cool. Can't find Akira. Thought it would be there.

It wasn't a box-office success.

Yes, though The Adventures of Milo and Otis is above Zootopia. I think they're the only three films to have earned over ¥5 billion.
