02/23
Saturday Estimates

Rank / Film / Sat. Est. / % change from last Sat. / Day in Release
1 A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) ¥124 million ($1.4 million), -38%, Day 10
2 Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥78 million ($850,000), -26%, Day 37
3 Brain Man (Toho) ¥44 million ($480,000), -29%, Day 16
4 Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥42 million ($460,000), -6%, Day 65
5 Strawberry Night (Toho) ¥34 million ($370,000), -29%, Day 29
6 A Chair on a Grassland (Toei) ¥31 million ($335,000), 0, Day 1
7 A Story of Yonosuke (Showgate) ¥26 million ($280,000), 0, Day 1

8 Life of Pi (Fox) ¥23 million ($250,000), -36%, Day 30
9 Zero Dark Thirty (Gaga) ¥20 million ($220,000), -49%, Day 9
10 Jack Reacher (Paramount) ¥19 million ($205,000), -33%, Day 23

Pretty good hold for Die Hard 5.

Meh for the openers. I was hoping A Story of Yonosuke could do better than that and debut in the Top 5.

Les Mis is doing so incredibly well that it's very likely stay in the Top 5 for a few more weeks (bringing it to 12/13-consecutive weeks in total) and perhaps up to 15-20 weeks in the Top 10, too. It's also probably going to the #1 Imported Film this year (and their biggest since Harry Potter 7.2). Assuming no unforeseen massive breakout from something like Pacific Rim, only Monster University has a chance to beat it.

I'm impressed by Strawberry Night. It had a decent opening, but it's legs have been quite strong for a tv drama this time of year.

So much for those strong audience reports from Twitter for Zero Dark Thirty. A second weekend drop near 50% is pretty rough, especially for this type of film.

Most Consecutive Weeks in the Top 10 (Since 1998)

Spirited Away (2001) 26
Howl's Moving Castle (2004) 21
Armageddon (1998) 20
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) 18
Bayside Shakedown (1998) 18
Avatar (2010) 16
Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003) 16
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2002) 16
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) 16
Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World (2004) 15
Monsters Inc. (2002) 15
The Green Mile (2000) 15
Deep Impact (1998) 15
Ponyo (2008) 14
The Last Samurai (2004) 14
The Matrix (1999) 14
Finding Nemo (2004) 13
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2004) 13
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2003) 13
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2002) 13
M:I-2 (2000) 13
Alice in Wonderland (2010) 12
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) 12
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) 12
Saving Private Ryan (1998) 12

With Les Miserables locking up 10-consecutive weeks in the Top 5, it is now in perfect position to do a minimum of 12-consecutive weeks in the Top 10. After checking March's schedule again, I'm seeing the possibility of 14 or 15-consecutive weeks in the Top 10.

It actually spent more than half a year in the Top 10. It was there for 26-consecutive weeks (15 weeks in 1st), but resurfaced after winning the Golden Bear in Berlin and ranking 4th (rising from 18th) in it's 32nd week and spent an additional 5 weeks in the Top 10 after that. So.... overall, it spent 32 weeks in the Top 10.

It's a lock and should be above $60 million by the end of the month.

The film has plenty notes left to be sung. It's going to be at about $57 million after this weekend and as I've mentioned it's still in the Top 5 in Week 10. There is also the Oscar boost the film will probably get next week if Anne Hathaway wins Best Supporting Actress and whatever else it may pick up tomorrow night.

We're looking at $65 million, perhaps $70 million even.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2013) Weekend Estimates
Why, thanks.

Hmm, let's talk about Oscar results and how they will effect the films at the box-office (all of which, minus Argo, have recently opened or will soon).

-Les Miserables (In Release, Week 10): It doesn't need anymore help at the box-office, but the Best Supporting Actress win for Anne Hathaway and the wins for Makeup and Sound Mixing (less so of course) will just push it to even greater heights than it's already headed. The film is aiming for 6 billion yen ($65 million+), and the wins tonight probably secures it.

-Lincoln (4/19): It wasn't too popular tonight and while it only won Best Actor for DDL and Best Production Design, the former win along with having Spielberg at the helm gives it potential. Overall, though, I don't think tonight changed anything.

-Django Unchained (3/1): Opening this upcoming weekend, the win for Best Supporting Actor, Chistoph Waltz, and Best Original Screenplay should give it a better than expected debut this week. I don't know if it has 1 billion yen potential given Tarantino's past few films, but it's possible.

-Life Of Pi (In Release, Week 5): Having won the most awards, including the very important Best Director win for Ang Lee, I think a sizable boost can be expected for a couple weeks and will push the film past the 2 billion yen mark which wasn't looking good before tonight.

-Zero Dark Thirty (In Release, Week 2): After a poor second weekend hold and disappointing at the Oscars tonight, I don't expect it to hang on for long.

-Silver Linings Playbook (In Release, Week 1): Jennifer Lawrence's win for Best Actress might give it a little life and an expansion after debuting in just 56 theaters this weekend and missing the Top 10. I wouldn't expect much for it, however since interest was already low.

3 (-) A Certain Magical Index (Warner Bros.) NEW!
4 (3) Brain Man (Toho) Week 3

6 (4) Strawberry Night (Toho) Week 5
7 (-) A Chain on a Grassland (Toei) NEW!
8 (6) Zero Dark Thirty (Gaga) Week 2
9 (7) Life of Pi (Fox) Week 5
10 (-) A Story of Yonosuke (Showgate) NEW!

Well, well. Seeing A Certain Magical Index here is quite the surprise. I never thought to included it in the forecast because it's playing on just 30 screens and no weekend data of any kind was released for it either. It wasn't even playing at any of the major cinema chains meaning it did massive business (likely entire weekend sell outs) at the few smaller theaters it was playing.

The film sure brought out the otaku fans, too, delivering a very impressive ¥100,757,700 ($1.15 million) on 69,117 admissions playing on only 30 screens. A 2-Day PSA of ¥3.36 million ($36,000), very nice. That also gives it an avg. ticket price of ¥1,458 ($16), nearly as high as film with a 60%+ 3D share which confirms the otaku base that don't care what tickets cost. I remember some locations were selling tickets at ¥10,000+ ($120+ then) for the K-ON! film a couple years back.

A Chair on a Grassland opened in 7th place with disappointing results for Toei. Playing on 207 screens, it only managed 39,509 admissions for a ¥44,198,100 ($475,000) debut.

At least one more week in the Top 5, for 11-consecutive, looks locked up especially with the Oscar wins last night to give it a boost. And as a reminder, it's the only film on the list to never rank 1st at the box-office.

¥1 billion Commercial Success (US ≈$50 million film)

Congrats to Les Mis for exceeding the ¥5 billion blockbuster mark and 4 million admissions. It's the first Hollywood film to achieve each milestone in over a year.

Also, big milestone for Ted by easily reaching ¥3 billion. It has become far and away the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all-time, and will soon overtake Home Alone 2 and become the third highest-grossing imported-comedy of all-time behind the original Home Alone and Pretty Woman.

A Good Day to Die Hard has no problem exceeding ¥1 billion in it's second weekend. WOM doesn't appear as poor as elsewhere, so it shouldn't have any trouble hitting ¥2 billion.

Strawberry Night continues to do well for Toho and will reach ¥2 billion possibly this upcoming weekend.

No doubt. It has been adding many screens every week though since opening which has really boosted it's legs, but that doesn't really undermine it's performance so far. It's doing so well even, that it is quite likely to land a spot in the Top 10 films of the year. After six weeks, Japan is it's second biggest market overseas and it won't be too far off the UK's total in the end.

3 (2) Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥120 million ($1.4 million) Week 7
4 (-) Django Unchained (Sony) ¥100 million ($1.2 million) NEW! [148 theaters]

9 (7) Life of Pi (Fox) ¥40 million ($430,000) Week 6
10 (8) Zero Dark Thirty (Gaga) ¥30 million ($325,000) Week 3

Another pretty slow weekend at the box-office with the holdovers shining the most.

Fortunately, next weekend sees the latest Doraemon film open against Oz: The Great and Powerful which will definitely liven things up a bit.

Projected Totals (¥1 billion+) after Sunday

-Strawberry Night: ¥2 billion ($23 million) after six weeks.

Outside the Top 10

Saturday Estimates (03/02)

Film / Rank / Sat. Est. / % change from last Sat. / Day in Release
1 Flight (Paramount) ¥84 million ($915,000), 0, Day 2
2 A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) ¥74 million ($805,000), -43%, Day 17
3 Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥61 million ($665,000), -30%, Day 44
4 Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥52 million ($565,000), +32%, Day 71
5 Django Unchained (Sony) ¥33 million ($360,000), 0, Day 2
6 Brain Man (Toho) ¥27 million ($295,000), -32%, Day 22
7 Life of Pi (Fox) ¥24 million ($260,000), -13%, Day 37
8 A Certain Magical Index (Warner Bros.) ¥20 million ($220,000), -64%, Day 8
9 Strawberry Night (Toho) ¥17 million ($185,000), -49%, Day 36
10 Zero Dark Thirty (Gaga) ¥12 million ($130,000), -44%, Day 15

-Flight is doing pretty well and will probably bump off Die Hard 5 to debut in 1st place for the weekend.

-Django Unchained... eh, not bad considering the low theater count, but I thought it could have done a little better. The opening will however been down at least 40% compared to Inglourious Bastards.

-Les Miserables  is increasing again, and this time by a LOT thanks to it's Oscar wins. The film has easily succeeded at having 11-consecutive weeks in the Top 5. And the fact that it's going to earn over ¥100 million ($1.1/1.2 million) in it's 11th weekend is incredible. To put the number into a comparison, The Avengers grossed just slightly more in it's 11th weekend in the US.

-Life of Pi is looking at it's best hold to date thanks to the Oscars. And while it's not benefiting nearly as well much as Les Mis, it's still impressive.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2013) Les Mis makes History
Most Consecutive-Weeks in the Top 5 (Since 1998)

Spirited Away (2001) - 21
Armageddon (1998) - 18
Avatar (2010) - 16
Howl's Moving Castle (2004) - 16
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) - 16
Deep Impact (1998) - 15
The Last Samurai (2004) - 13
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) - 13
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2002) - 13
The Matrix (1999) - 13
Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003) - 12
Les Miserables (2013) - 11
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) - 11
The Green Mile (2000) - 11
M:I-2 (2000) - 11
Bayside Shakedown (1998) - 11
Thermae Romae (2012) - 10
Ponyo (2008) - 10
Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World (2004) - 10
Finding Nemo (2004) - 10
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004) - 10
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2002) - 10
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) - 10
Monsters, Inc. (2002) - 10
Saving Private Ryan (1998) - 10

Saturday's estimate locks up an amazing 11-consecutive week for Les Mis in the Top 5, but can it do 12? Doraemon: Nobita's Secret Gadget Museum and Oz: The Great and Powerful will make it very difficult next weekend, and it'll need to overtake either Ted or Die Hard 5 to do it, but it's possible not being too far below them already this weekend.

A fellow poster on another board I post shared these two graphs yesterday and I wanted to share them. Both graphs include both domestic and foreign titles.

The first graph ranks each month of the past 12 years by box-office revenue:

The second graph ranks the past three years by month:

Denzel Washington is a pretty popular actor in Japan. All of his films usually post solid returns. And Robert Zemeckis is also well known, so his name would have helped somewhat, too.

Weekend Estimates (03/02-03)

Film / Rank / Wknd. Est. / % change / Week in Release
1 (-) Flight (Paramount) ¥158 million ($1.7 million), 0, NEW! [317 theaters]
2 (1) A Good Day to Die Hard (Fox) ¥144 million ($1.6 million), -44%, Week 3
3 (2) Ted (Toho-Towa) ¥120 million ($1.3 million), -31%, Week 7
4 (5) Les Miserables (Toho-Towa) ¥101 million ($1.1 million), +26%, Week 11
5 (-) Django Unchained (Sony) ¥69 million ($745,000), 0, NEW! [148 theaters]
6 (4) Brain Man (Toho) ¥51 million ($550,000), -37%, Week 4
7 (7) Life of Pi (Fox) ¥47 million ($510,000), -13%, Week 6
8 (3) A Certain Magical Index (Warner Bros.) ¥40 million ($430,000), -60%, Week 2
9 (6) Strawberry Night (Toho) ¥35 million ($380,000), -47%, Week 6
10 (8) Zero Dark Thirty (Gaga) ¥25 million ($270,000), -44%, Week 3

-Flight looks safe to debut on top. The weekend estimate is also good enough to give the film a shot at a ¥1 billion ($12 million) total.

-Django Unchained held well on Sunday, but overall the debut is a little underwhelming. It's probably looking at ¥400 million ($5 million) in the end.

-Les Miserables.. I've said practically everything I can at this point about it's amazing run, but with an 11th weekend estimated above ¥100 million, I have another chart it just joined that I'll post later.

-A Certain Magical Index as expected sees a big second weekend drop. It still had the best PSA again by far for the weekend though if it's still playing at just 30 locations.

Films with 11th Weekends Above ¥100 million (Since 2001)

List Rank (11th Wknd Rank) / Wknd Gross, 11-Week Cume
1 (1) Spirited Away (2001) ¥476 million ($3.9 million), ¥22.7 billion ($189 million)
2 (2) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2002) ¥331 million ($2.5 million), ¥18.8 billion ($142 million)
3 (3) Avatar (2010) ¥311 million ($3.5 million), ¥13.2 billion ($148 million)
4 (3) Howl's Moving Castle (2005) ¥253 million ($2.5 million), ¥16.9 billion ($164 million)
5 (3) The Last Samurai (2004) ¥219 million ($2.1 million), ¥11.8 billion ($112 million)
6 (3) Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) ¥184 million ($1.5 million), ¥16.2 billion ($136 million)
7 (3) Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003) ¥136 million ($1.3 million), ¥15.8 billion ($143 million)
8 (5) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) ¥120 million ($1.1 million), ¥12.9 billion ($118 million)
9 (4) Les Miserables (2013) ¥101 million ($1.1 million), ¥5.3 billion ($60 million) Estimate

And narrowly missing the list:
10 (7) Ponyo (2008) ¥98.8 million ($915,000), ¥14.6 billion ($135 million)

Les Mis is certainly among the best of the best here and it's total pals in comparison, but it's been pulling it's weight these past 11-weeks in it's own right.

Is DH5 having IMAX and/or bigger ticket price? It seems to be ahead of Flight in TOHO which is always good and then its second or ahead of Flight everywhere else.
