FINAL - 675,749 (~945,200)

Note: Usual location admissions is the first number (70% of market), while I'm providing a projected overall admissions number in (parenthesis).

Final includes the 2,000 the programmer recommended adding to help make up for lost sales from Aeon and 109 cinemas crashing.

So biggest single-day ever, (first film to ever sell more than 900,000 admissions in one-day, and I wouldn't entirely out 1 million until the official number is released). And it's the biggest Friday by a ridiculous number. It's about three times higher than the Fridays for big films like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Frozen, and such, and four to five times higher than the Fridays for other major openers like Detective Conan, Toy Story, and others.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
It's a bit of a shame that it (seemingly) fell just a bit short of 1mln, but since it'll probably manage that on saturday I guess it's not that big of a deal.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Biggest Openers Since 2015
Since Fridays aren't particularly big, especially for younger-skewing films, it's not even worth comparing Demon Slayer's Friday to anything. It's far and away, roughly three times above the biggest films, higher than anything before it.

So, here is how Demon Slayer's Friday (again, F-R-I-D-A-Y), compares to the Saturdays, Sundays, and Weekend of other films of the past five years. Its Saturday will be even bigger (possibly above 750,000 or 800,000).

It could have hit 1 million. It's probably a bit shy, around 950,000, but strong rural numbers could have gotten it there. But we're talking about a weekday that just broke the single-day record by possibly 150,000 admissions or more. If Friday can manage 51% capacity, then Saturday can certainly do 60-70% capacity (predicting 1.2/1.3 million). The Saturday pre-sale number that'll be released later is going to be nutty, possibly over 500,000 (Friday's was 394,000).

There are many examples, but the Toho Cinemas in Umeda has given it 10,200 seats tomorrow, and it's already sold over 80% of them in advance. Only 2 of its 29 showings tomorrow are below 80% capacity right now.

It's a bit of a shame that it (seemingly) fell just a bit short of 1mln, but since it'll probably manage that on saturday I guess it's not that big of a deal.

Oh yeah, I wasn't trying to say these friday results were disappointing by any means. In fact, they are quite frightening, lol. Just that it would've been cool seeing it make 1mln on friday already (although that possibility is not quite out yet).

I was taking a look at some of the saturday showings earlier and I agree, it looks like it'll be truly insane.

Wow! That's insane. How did this work blow up so much? I have been following shounen series for a while, but have never seen something like this and especially for a 4 year old work. I know the music is really popular for it so that might have been one of the contributing factors, but this still seems unreal.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
That's because there honestly has never been anything like this. In the course of the past year, since season one of the anime concluded, Demon Slayer has achieved a popularity level that's unrivaled. It's broken, and continues to break (now at the box-office), records across every medium its apart of. Fastest selling manga ever (which comes with ton of records to go along with that), biggest selling anime single (LiSA's opening song) ever, and the ongoing re-broadcast special of the anime likely broke some TV ratings record yesterday since it included episode 19. Last week's batch of episodes that re-aired earned a huge 16.7% household rating over 5 hours, and yesterday's batch is going to be even higher.

And as you mentioned, the music is indeed very popular. Having popular music is typically key to achieving social phenomenon status, nearly all of the biggest films in Japan have a hugely popular soundtrack to go along with it, and Demon Slayer has that.

What's also helping it at the box-office, especially for a shounen series, is that it's appealing more toward females than males. Females make up the majority of moviegoers in Japan, and go back and look at the pictures I've shared yesterday. There's noticeably more females.

Japanese audiences in general also really enjoy emotional and/or tragic stories shared by a family, siblings, and/or a romantic couple (see Frozen, Titanic, Your Name., and many other top grossing films). The movie is adapting a high action, but pretty emotional and sadder arc that leaves room for future hope, so that's going to be very appealing and probably lead to repeat viewings. Demon Slayer has all these familiar themes in its story, and the characters Tanjiro and Nezuko check these boxes of success off as well.

Going into Saturday, 3 hours before showings even begin, some fun images:

X = sold out, △ = less than 20% remaining, O = less than 50% remaining.

The Darth Vader screen (733-seater) at Toho Cinemas Umeda is almost entirely booked for the day before the day begins. The 8:40AM showing on the same screen isn't shown since it sold out on Monday. (Can't click to see a sold out showing).

:hahaha: :hahaha: :hahaha:

What an absurd pre-sale number; it's more than the daily total for most of the films on the list. Yo-Kai Watch is is the second biggest opener ever in admissions (behind just The Matrix Reloaded, barely), and it's almost double that.

Friday was 394,887, so Saturday already has a 100,000 lead, and that probably doesn't include the 08:40AM sold out (all of them) showings at the MOVIX cinema chain.

Aeon Cinemas crashed again, as soon as the first hour of showings began...This will of course have an impact in the early hours of ticket sales when I begin to post them.

Here are all their crash days and rough times being down.

Monday (all day - 24 hours)
Tuesday (all morning, early afternoon)
Friday morning (~7-9am)
Friday night (~10pm-midnight)
Saturday morning (~7am to present)

A few things: Aeon Cinemas has experienced some down times this morning, already, due to online traffic, so some of their sales may be missing (7am looks low). Also, every theater in the country is having a simultaneous 8:40am showing today featuring a live-broadcast with the cast. All of these showings have sold out. According to the programmers, MOVIX Cinemas was having trouble processing this specific showtime, so it may be excluded as well, but is expected to be added later in the day.

And Friday's performance will be below for reference:

Below is how all the biggest films of the past five-years have performed on Saturday at the usual locations (~70% of the market). This is going to be a runaway, dominating victory for Demon Slayer (possibly doubling Frozen II), but you can see just how massive in scale it really is versus everything else. It has sold 74% of all its available seating as of 10am today so far.
