Another massive Sunday with it being the 1st of the Month, just like last month. Most films saw Sunday increases of nearly 100% or better (admissions). This does greatly decrease the avg. ticket price for everything over the weekend, though, so expect the drops above to be around 10-15% higher in gross.
American Sniper looks good for a sub-20% hold in its second weekend, and Big Hero 6 is definitely up over last weekend with that huge increase in admissions.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin I was one of two films to decrease on Sunday, but it still sold through 63% of its available weekend admissions here. It's only playing at 13 locations, 8 of which are accounted for above.

>American Sniper is certainly shaping up to have an impressive run in Japan. It's very likely to exceed ¥2 billion now, and might make a run at ¥2.5 billion ($21/22 million). It will become Clint Eastwood's biggest film in Japan since Letters from Iwo Jima's blockbuster performance.
>Big Hero 6, as expected, saw a weekend increase following its Oscar win last Sunday. It has achieved 11-consecutive weeks in the Top 3 now, and should go on to remain in the Top 10 throughout all of March. It's unlikely to reach ¥10 billion, but a total of ¥9.5 billion ($81/82 million) is looking doable. It's going to be incredibly difficult for any film this year to beat it.
Its legs and weekly performance have already been more impressive than any Disney film or Pixar film, except Frozen, so everything from this point is just bonus points.
>Have a Song on Your Lips is a disappointment, as are most wide openers on 200+ screens that fail to reach ¥100 million.
>Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin I had an excellent debut on only 13 screens. Its Saturday was bigger than its Sunday, so its avg. ticket price might end up high enough to edge out Have a Song on Your Lips for a Top 5 debut.
>The mystery surrounding Mr. Children [Reflection]'s increase last weekend (rose from 11th to 5th place) and strong weekday performance last week has been explained. It's no longer screening, so fans were rushing out last week to see it.

I'm a little late posting this, but was reminded of this important news while thinking of a film that could beat Big Hero 6 this year. And The Boy and the Beast is probably the only film that has potential to do it.
Berlin: Gaumont Pre-Sells Animated ‘Beast’ Across Europe

“Beast” is a coming-of-age tale about Kyuta, a lonely Japanese boy living in Shibuya, and Kumatetsu, a lonesome beast inhabiting Jutengai, an imaginary world. One day, Kyuta forays into the imaginary world and, as he’s looking for his way back, meets Kumatetsu, who becomes his guide and friend.
Gaumont is shopping the arthouse toonpic with a showreel at the European Film Market. Nippon TV reps Asian territories.
Hosoda earned critical and commercial acclaim with his last film “Wolf Children,” which was a hit in France, where Eurozoom distributed.
Toho is expected to roll out the film in Japan on July 11; Gaumont is planning a release in late 2015 or early 2016.

And after two weeks now, it has already broke ¥1 billion with ¥1,017,176,300 ($8.7 million) with 804,934 admissions. It'll break ¥2 billion with no sweat, and has a good shot at ¥2.5 billion ($21/22 million) or more, and possibly reaching 2 million admissions.
>Big Hero 6 rises one spot to the #2 position, and achieves its 11th-consecutive week in the Top 3. And after 11-weeks in release, it has exceeded ¥8.8 billion ($75 million) with over 6.9 million admissions. It is now the 46th biggest film of all-time, and the 12th biggest animated film of all-time.
>The Curtain Rises makes a very surprising debut at #4, playing on 127 screens. Unfortunately, T-Joy hasn't released any weekend figures for it yet, but given its ranking, it came in much, much higher than estimates. The only explanation I have is that it played incredibly well at Aeon Cinemas, but to play so heavily outside of the usual locations, there must have been some events going on at Aeon or elsewhere.
>Have a Song on Your Lips comes in at #5, earning ¥83,033,900 ($710,000) with 72,900 admissions on 260 screens. Any opening under ¥100 million on over 200 screens it pretty disappointing, so hopefully it rebounds over the weekdays.
>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles falls out of the Top 5 after 4 weeks in release, but is still posting some decent numbers and broke ¥1 billion over the weekend, too. It earned ¥80,981,100 ($690,000) with 60,227 admissions over the the weekend, bringing its 4-week total up to ¥1,057,400,400 ($9.0 million) with 712,837 admissions.
>Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin I debuts at #7 despite playing on 13 screens. However... again, no weekend figures has been reported for it yet. It's no uncommon for very limited releases to have numbers reported later in the week, but I think this is the first time that two different film figures are still unknown.
>Yo-Kai Watch: The Secret of Birth, Nyan! is still hanging in there near the bottom of the Top 10, which to me shows that it's the only choice for parents and their toddlers/young children. Yo-Kai Watch has become the most-attended TV anime film of all-time, and the second highest-grossing TV anime film of all-time.
Now with March upon us, there will be several notable releases coming up, beginning with the newest Doraemon release (the 36th installment) this upcoming weekend. Doraemon always has one of the best openings every year at the box-office, and regularly frequents the yearly Top 10.

Well, so much for Big Hero 6 having an extended run throughout March. It's going to be in for one nasty drop this weekend and probably find itself at the bottom of the Top 10.
Toho has cut it entirely from their theaters this weekend, and other locations aren't looking too good, either. It went from being the 5th widest release last weekend to almost nothing. It's still in the Top 3 at the weekend box-office, even if it'll be falling fast soon with many notable films being released, so cutting it this exact weekend is rather bizarre. Next weekend would have made more sense with a ton of wide openers being released on the 14th ahead of Spring Break.
I never would have thought Yo-Kai Watch would end up playing a little longer (it'll probably lose most of its screens/showtimes next weekend), but it appears that way.
I'll be posting an updated release schedule later, too, with more notable films now having release dates. Summer 2015 is looking very significant. There isn't going to be a slow, or even average, week once we hit July until late September. Almost every weekend has one or more blockbusters being released now, and there are still a couple major films planned for Summer without a date.

I'm not completely sure, honestly.
It has hung onto more screens/showtimes than it's really needed for several weeks now, so my guess is that it was going to lose some of them last weekend but didn't since it won the Oscar. So, the drastic decrease (or cut) in screens/showtimes might be due to that.
Its weekdays have been down 50/60% from last week, so maybe theaters were looking ahead to the weekend and decided to severely cut its counts because of this, too. Doraemon opening probably played a role in it, too, but new openers usually don't have have too much of an effect regarding this.

Well, considering Doraemon is from Toho, I would assume that is the main reason, at least for the Toho cinemas, but the others, I guess is because of the combination of post-Oscars fatigue and it hogging cinemas for the last few weeks. It's a shame to see it get such a decrease, though. But then again, it wasn't exactly nearing any record or anything, so it's not a big loss. It proved it was a huge success, and that's all we could have really hoped for anyway. If I remember correctly, Frozen, while not as drastically, also got pulled from many cinemas at the end, right? (although I think the DVD release had something to do with that, but they did give up on it when it still had gas left in the tank).

Yeah, Frozen was pulled in July after its DVD was released. If they had pushed the DVD release back even further, it may have challenged Titanic for the #2 all-time spot.
However, July is a big month for entertainment releases (DVDs, Games, etc.), so not releasing it then may have dented its all-time record first week and overall Blu-Ray/DVD sales slightly. It sold over 1 million copies in 3 days (about $50 million in sales), and has since sold over 3.2 million copies (over $120 million in sales). And this doesn't included the record 4.5 million rentals (as of last November) it has had, too.
Although... I do remember the DVD release date announcement itself for Frozen did hurt its box-office a bit, too (screen/showtime loss), so that is probably the case with Big Hero 6 now, as well (it just had its DVD release date announced for April recently).

Except for 2005. I don't know what happened that year exactly, but I think they passed on making a Doraemon film that year because of the anime transition (studio change).
Doraemon has had 3 different anime series, and 2005 was the last transition year.
There are many movie franchises that receive a theatrical release every year (some receive multiple releases a year) in Japan, though, so Doraemon isn't unique in that regard.

Apparently not. Doraemon is a major icon, though, first debuting in the 1960's in manga form. Think of him as Japan's version of Mickey Mouse (just not forgotten like Mickey largely has been). He's a character that gets passed down from generation to generation.
The anime usually averages an average household rating of 9% or so (regularly in the Top 5 anime each week), and has been doing so for many, many years. And the movies have been opening in early March every year since 1980, and is considered the beginning of Spring season, by parents and their children.
