Probably not. Should be finishing around ~9.7 million. I don't really think there's a need to get it to 10 million, but it will be close enough that a final final giveaway would likely get it there. I expect if they intend to push it to 10 million, then we'll hear of some giveaway announcement in the next week or two ahead of Golden Week (April 29th-May 5th).

Okay, so question for all you guys:

I have a friend who collects Ultraman trading cards, and they're needing help determining the rarity of the cards. There's the normal Rare (R), Super Rare (SR), Special Super Rare (SSR), and Ultra Rare (UR) that many a TCG use.

However, there are other rarity abbreviations they need help with: CP, HR, SGR, USR, PR, LGR, and ZR. R in each of these rarities is almost certainly "Rare", but I haven't been able to help him. None of the TCGs I've collected use these abbreviations.

Any help would be appreciated! Also, if anyone is in the know, if they can also share which rarities among these outrank the others, they'd be very appreciative too.

Thanks!

For the sequel of a movie that had a nearly 1.5b 3 days opening, FB3's presales are...abysmal. 1 show over 50% in shinjuku, 0 at umeda, 0 at namba, 0 at ebina, in fact most of these look dreadful. I know you mentioned to expect a decline, but this is looking like a potentially huge decline is coming for the series.

I'm just thinking back of what I saw for NWH in presales, which was a comparable opening to FB2 in Japan, and it's not even remotely close. Not a single midnight show over 50% even at shinjuku either while spidey had way more and still sold 65% of them across all theaters. I'm trying to feel where this can open and I feel like opening to half or less than FB2 could very well happen. :|

I'd wait another day or so to see where presales stand. Harry Potter (and Fantastic Beasts) actually skews pretty young in Japan (not Doraemon young or anything, but younger than you'd expect), so presales a couple days out may be misleading.

I haven't checked any myself, but I'm also expecting it to have an incredibly wide release since the market's a little weak and it's opening across every premium format, I think. It probably has a ton (probably among the top 10 all time) of showings.

But yeah, a sizeable decrease is likely. FB2 didn't drop much from FB1 and almost outgrossed HP7-1 (FB1 did), and its strong retention can likely be attributed to Johnny Depp (still a big name in Japan). I recall photos of fans cosplaying Grindelwald at the airport and theaters just like they had Depp's other characters in the past. But he was fired, so FB3 will need to rely soley on the franchise/brand power.

¥6.57 billion ($58.7 million) / 4.92 million - Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore opens this Friday (4/8). The Fantastic Beast films have been very successful in Japan, but a major recasting of one of the biggest draws ever (Depp) in the market, as well as a questionable release date (between Spring Break and Golden Week), not to mention the state of Hollywood in Japan now... may cause this third entry to see a sizeable decline. We'll known soon.

Normally, it probably would have dropped 10-20% from FB2. All the HP films dropped ~10-20% from their predecessor (until HP7-2), and FB2 dropped 11% versus FB1, so this long-standing trend would have likely continued. But there are (negative) factors to consider for the first time here.

The DBS movie novel has been rescheduled to june 30, seeing as it was meant to release same date with the film that's probably going to be the new date for it also.

June 30th (a Thursday) would be odd, but I can definitely see July 1st since it's, well, a Friday, but more so since it's a discount day. Of course, opening on the 1st will likely deflate the weekend frame itself, but the 3-day would be more impressive.

Note: Entry determined by widest day of a film's opening weekend (typically first Saturday, but some are for Friday).

Pretty close to the number of showtimes I was expecting (near 3,000), the tenth most of any film since 2015, but not as many seats as I was expecting (750,000+). Its showtime counts are sort of uneven (some theaters have it playing a dozen or more times, while others are low at 6 or 7) after checking various locations, so the seating isn't unsurprising looking at this now.

I think theaters mostly held back since it didn't need as many seats or showings as Grindelwald, and they're certainly preparing for Detective Conan next weekend. Almost 650,000 seats and 2,700+ showings is definitely plenty here.

If Saturday has more seats, I'll repost this list with those counts. Saturdays used to be the widest day in terms of seating/showings, but in more recent years Friday has been on par or sometimes higher (especially for imported releases).

Actually I just checked again and it was supposed to come out 3 days after the movie, so...june 24 maybe? Either that or the first like you said, but would be strange for the novel to release first and effectively spoil the movie.

We should know either way pretty soon. I saw someone mention that Broly is being broadcast on April 16th, so we can probably expect the new release date for Super Hero then.

June 24th is "fine", but it is a full three weeks (or four weekends) from summer vacation and seven weeks from Obon Festival. July 1st would be preferable (bigger 3-day guaranteed, a week closer to the holidays) if both dates were an option.

EDIT: Just saw that Lightyear has taken the July 1st slot. Doesn't mean Super Hero won't go there still as there'd be no crossover whatsoever, but it'd have to split the bigger screens with it and potentially limit its opening weekend. June 24th is probably more likely now.

I think Toei should just go with the 25th (Saturday) though since the Friday opening day really deflates the opening weekends for films like this (fan-driven films). They're going back to the traditional Saturday opening for One Piece Film Red, and I have to imagine it's because the Friday opening for One Piece Stampede kept its opening weekend below ¥1 billion.

Looked at many of the usual locations for Friday and Saturday for Fantastic Beasts. It looks pretty good to me. Its Friday won't be anything special since it's as ordinary of a weekday as possible, so it won't compare to No Way Home's Friday, for example, which still opened within the New Year holiday period.

Its Saturday looks at least on par, but perhaps stronger than, its Friday right now, meaning both Saturday and Sunday are very likely to come in higher than Friday.

If it can do ~150,000 today, ~200,000 Sat., ~200,000 Sun., then its opening weekend won't be too far off the last two films and it should break ¥1 billion over the three-day. We'll see though. I don't get the feeling it's going to see a substantial decline though, and expect it to see that normal ~10-20% (likely the higher end) decline that every HP (and FB so far) dropped.

It can drop up to 23.9% and still remain above the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion. I'd set this as the goal going into the weekend, then we can adjust from there once its weekend figures come in. And remember, it does have Golden Week in three weeks. Hopefully it can do ¥5 billion, minimum, to become Hollywood's first blockbuster since 2019 in Japan.

You're right, though not quite 150k but a lot better than I thought looking at PS, and saturday does look better so bump should happen. Maybe something like -25% over the 3days which would be pretty decent knowing FB2 had holiday OD.

Yeah, both FB1 and FB2 opened on November 23rd (a national holiday), so can't compare it to them, unfortunately.

Presales for Saturday do look good. Don't know if it can quite get to 200,000 at the usuals, but I think ~175,000(+) is pretty likely. And Sunday looks pretty decent too at the usual busy locations (at least one or a couple 50%+ showings, or soon to be, at the right locations already), which is a good sign that it could more or less match Saturday.

If we assume these figures happen, could be looking at an opening weekend around ¥700 million and a 3-day opening right on the cusp of ¥1 billion. It did open on all the premium formats though (4DX, IMAX, Dolby, etc.), so the avg. ticket price may be higher than expected, too. If it comes in near/above ¥1 billion for the 3-day, then it should certainly get above ¥4 billion and probably finish at ¥5 billion or so thanks to Golden Week.

So, looking like an expected decline (again, just like how every HP dropped from its predecessor, HP7-2 aside), but not something crazy. It still looks to be a pretty strong franchise in Japan and will possibly be the first Hollywood blockbuster in the market since 2019. *Fingers crossed* because if it misses ¥5 billion, then I think Jurassic World 3 is Hollywood's only other likely blockbuster candidate this year (not accounting for Avatar 2 if it makes December).

New information about Makoto Shinkai's upcoming movie.

Image:
Spoiler: show
Image

Plot Synopsis:
Suzume, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a quiet town in Kyushu, encounters a traveling young man who tells her "I'm looking for a door." She follows after him and discovers a weathered door in the ruins in the mountains, as if it were the only thing left standing from a collapse. As if drawn by something, Suzume reaches for the door...
Before long, doors begin to open one after another in various parts of Japan. As disasters come from the far side of the doors, the open doors must be closed.
The stars, the setting sun, and the morning sky—in that place she wandered into, there was a sky that seemingly blended all of time together. Guided by the mysterious doors, Suzume's "door-locking journey" begins.

Premieres November 11th

Also new teaser will be released April 10th. Should give us more of an idea of the film.

It's such an odd release date. Early/mid-November is pretty weak. And 11/11 is 7 weeks away from New Year. Unless it's really huge and able to hold off all the December openers, maintaining sufficient seats/showtimes to make the most out of the holidays seems doubtful. Why not just go for December if they're waiting till November? Multiple big films can thrive in December, so it can't be that.

I'm looking forward to it, and it's certainly a ¥10 billion candidate, but I'm also keeping expectations in check until it opens.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Wizarding World Box-Office History
FB3's Sat. presales are almost identical to NWH's (49,919 vs 49,120) at the usual locations.

The openings are on very different types of weekends (FB3 on a regular weekend between holiday periods, NWH on a holiday Monday weekend which typically boosts the weekend), so we'll see. NWH should have the bigger opening since, as mentioned, its weekend (Sunday) was boosted by the holiday Monday. But FB3 is looking pretty good.

And since it's looking good, I'll update its hourly ticket sales for the day versus past big openers.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Fantastic Beasts 3 - Saturday ADM Sale
Very good start to the day. A tad ahead of FB2, but way too early to say if it'll beat it. Still, this is a great start and might be a sign that it'll break 200,000 for the day.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Fantastic Beasts 3 - Saturday ADM Sale
Great morning period! Its lead over FB2 has increased, and it's ahead of NWH too. (Also ahead of Endgame, but that one saw a big jump at night.) Could be on track for ~225,000 now.
