ren0080,

Gintama: The Final was up over 20% Friday-to-Friday, as a result of the new giveaway that began today. Good news for the weekend! Thought you'd like to know.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: 2020 Yearly Results Up!
The first trailer for Shin Ultraman dropped yesterday. I think it looks promising! What's the reaction like in Japan? Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, who teamed up a few years ago to make the super successful Shin Godzilla, are also behind this film. Shin Godzilla made almost $80 million in Japan. Could Shin Ultraman perform similarly? Do you think the decision to trade suits for CGI will play a factor in its performance? And how did previous Ultraman films perform?

I want to give my two cents on this manga dicussion:

Now as to whether there was ever a time when every One Piece volume was above 3 million, I don't think so. But this is only because of the first two volumes of 2008 (49 and 50) which were released at a time when oricon wasn't very accurate. If we only count volumes released since 2009, then there was a brief moment in 2012 just before the release of volume 68 when all the volumes had sold over 3 million units.

Your information about Eternal Zero being the first thing ever to break the 4 million mark really adds to the topic. Now this explains why they wouldn't report KnY being the first thing ever to break the 4 million mark, it wasn't because of One Piece, but because of Eternal Zero..

With this info + the market context regarding all of One Piece volumes, it would really be pretty much impossible for any OP volumes to have reached 4M copies sold. The only thing that kept me from saying that it was impossible was the confusion as to why they didn't report KnY being the first thing ever to break the 4M mark, with this info my doubts are put to rest..

Now, regarding the info about OP having all of its volumes over 3 million copies... You say you don't think it happened, but only because volumes 49 and 50 were released in a time when Oricon wasn't very accurate and if we only count starting from 2009, that actually happened

There's a lot to unpack there.

First of all, you said volumes 49 and 50 were released in a time when Oricon wasn't that accurate... But in the same link that you posted, it says that Oricon started to track numbers in April 2008. Volume 49 was released before that, but volume 50 was released after, back in June 2008

If Oricon properly started tracking numbers in April 2008, then the only volume that may be a bit off in the 2008 yearly ranking is volume 49

And I didn't understand why you said volumes 49 and 50 would be the only reason to why OP never had all of its volumes over 3 million copies at the same time, when in fact volume 51 sold even less than volume 50

According to the 2008 yearly ranking:
One Piece #50 sold 1,678,208 (released in June 2008)
One Piece #51 sold 1,646,978 (released in September 2008)

And both of these volumes were released after Oricon started with its rankings...

Also according to this news right here, as of May 9, 2010... Volume 57 became the best selling volume in Oricon's history with 2,282M copies sold, beating the previous record holder who happened to be Volume 53, who had at that time sold a total of 2,280M copies
https://www.oricon.co.jp/news/76175/full/

Now, let's do some quick math: May 9 was just 2 weeks away from the break of the 1st half of the 2010 fiscal year (May 23), so let's say that volume 53 had, up until the end of the 1st half of the 2010 fiscal year, a total of 2,280M copies sold (after 63 weeks in release)

The 2nd half of the 2010 fiscal year had an average of backlog sales of 163,697 copies

The fiscal year of 2011 had an average of backlog sales of 428,006 copies

The fiscal year of 2012 had an average of backlog sales of 177,681 copies

You said that OP had a brief moment with all of its volumes over 3M copies sold, just before the release of volume 68, who happened before the end of the 2012 fiscal year (volume 68 was released in november 2, 2012... the fiscal year ended in november 18, 2012)

But, let's add the average of the following years to the best selling volume of One Piece up to the release of volume 57:

2,280M + 163,697 + 428,006 + 177,681 = 3,049,384 copies

So, adding the backlog average sales to the volume who was the best selling volume of One Piece up until May 9 of 2010, we'd have 3,049,384 copies sold up to the end of the 2012 fiscal year (when volume 68 was already out)

Now, we are using of example here the BEST selling volume of One Piece prior to the release of volume 57. What about volumes like 49, 50, 51 or even 52, that were way behing volume 53? Are we going to say that the differance between volume 53 to all these volumes was shorter than 50k (the necessary for these volume to have reached 3M copies)?

So, considering this numbers and the backlog average for the following years, I don't think there was ever a time when OP had all of its released volumes over 3M copies, not even by a brief moment like you said.

It's going to be pretty close, I think. Could potentially see "split" winners again like four weeks ago.

Loved Like a Flower Bouquet is looking to possibly dethrone it in admissions, but Demon Slayer's average ticket price has been very high in recent weeks due to the 4D showings being so strong (any repeat viewers are more likely to see it in 4D versus standard format, I'd say), that it could still stay at #1 in revenue if it loses in admissions.

I'll have the Weekend Forecast posted in an hour or two.

Would kinda hurt for this year to have Conan delayed yet again, hopefully it doesn't have to come to that.

Unusual delay, honestly. The box office is thriving, and has been thriving. And in regard to COVID, cases have gradually declined and/or stabilized. We'll need to wait a few days to see if the current restrictions (which have had little/no impact on the box office, and in fact everything in release has been holding exceptionally well for weeks now) will be extended beyond Feb. 7th, but right now an extension is looking unlikely.

Younger-skewing films have been struggling since families are less likely to come out right now, so I sort of understand the decision in that case, but it seems a little early to delay it.

What may be delayed is the production side. While animation production is almost always rushed, we're seeing that productions are now split in two sides: productions that had releases delayed due to the pandemic, but were completed according to earlier scheduling and have no issues and productions that had releases delayed, but are still struggling to complete on time. Productions like Attack on Titan's current season are in horrible shape production-wise, but their committees/broadcasting partners won't delay it, so what airs isn't the best quality.

I wouldn't be surprised if the production state of the Doraemon movie isn't where it needs to be because the various assisting studios aren't able to help because they're squashing fires elsewhere for other productions (TV and film). That would explain a delay so far out from release date.

Incidentally, the upcoming Sword Art Online: Progressive film's production is completely done; they're looking for a theatre date to confirm right now, so that one is in the opposite condition.

That could indeed be the case. Might have to keep an eye on more late-winter/early-spring releases.

Going to forecast that Demon Slayer will achieve its 16th-consecutive weekend atop the box office, but it could be very close and potentially get bumped to second in admissions. Gintama: The Final is either aiming for a very small decline, or a potential small(ish) increase from a second round of giveaways. And the bottom half of the Top 10 is likely to be very close in rankings.

If it comes to that, it will probably be 2020 in reverse with Conan being delayed to the summer and Doraemon being pushed back to next year.

Sorry, I missed your post yesterday. I'll watch the trailer and look into the project a bit later today to get an understanding of it.

I wouldn't expect a Shin Godzilla type of performance with what I currently know about Ultraman, but if this serves as the sort of "reboot/new-era" Ultraman in a similar way, I wouldn't rule out its potential versus its many predecessors.

I've been tracking the Japan box office in-depth for 11 years now, and I don't believe any of the Ultraman films released in that time have ever reached ¥1 billion (~$10 million). I also don't recall offhand of any of them reaching that milestone from at least 2000. Perhaps it was a more popular film franchise in the 60s-80s, but the box office for the franchise has been pretty weak in more modern years.

So the good news here is that Shin Ultraman will very likely surpass most of the other films with little effort most likely, similar to how Shin Godzilla easily outgrossed every other Godzilla film (and managed to sell more tickets than all of them aside from the earlier films in the 50s/early-60s), but I question the reach and appeal it has versus Godzilla. I'd say it's noticeably lower as I've never seen Ultraman mentioned among the biggest franchises in the market before.

I just read that Kimetsu no Yaiba is been nominated and is now part of the contenders for Oscar Awards.
Very nice but like a lot of people, Oscar isn't kind to non-English films. The possibility of KnY winning is there, but it is slim.

It is true. Last year, Parasite was the rare exception with 4 awards from 7 nominations. This year, KNY faces several giants like 2 Disney movies (Soul and Onward), Crood 2, Trolls World Tour. Onward and Crood 2 both focus on family bonds, which is similar to KNY. However, I just hope that the inspiration from Rengoku will "move" the judges emotionally during the global health crisis like this. Additionally, it depends on how North American audience reacts to the movie, which is also a big factor. The influence from the public's opinion can affect academy members when they vote.

I highly doubt KnY will win because the movie still depends a lot on the anime to fully enjoy and get all the references. I do not think Academy audience will be able to catch up with the anime just to watch this movie.

Demon Slayer has little to no chance of being nominated, let alone winning the Award.
Funimation has very bad history advertising their movies for the awards season, Something tha Your name. Suffered 4 years ago.

The current season already started, more than 2 dozen of critics circles already awarded, and the leaders in animation are PIXAR's Soul and Cartoon Saloon's Wolfwalkers.

Corpse, what could be announced on February 12 for Demon Slayer ? And if what's being announced is about something positive for the Demon Slayer box office (giveaway weekend or re-release with a stretched out version of the movie or whatever ...), could Demon Slayer hit $370M or maybe $380M ?

Wherever they decide to take the series, be it another season of the anime or a second movie (or both) is very likely to be announced. We can probably expect an update on the video games that have been in production for a while now. And since it's a 2-day Festival, allowing for multiple announcements, a spin-off manga (or more light novels) of the main series is a possibility as well.

As for any announcement for the current film, they could announce a final giveaway. Something related to the current film is probably the least likely of potential announcements, but it wouldn't be too surprising.

And for Mugen Train: At its current pace of incredible holds and stability since January 12th, it'll likely leg it out to at least ¥38 billion (~$365 million) on its own in the coming months, so $370 million would be doable. ¥39 billion or more would be needed for $380 million, but this mark will likely require some event to boost it there.

Another great weekend for the box office in terms of holds and stability, once again mirroring the incredibly strong weekdays that started a couple weeks ago.

I'm pretty confident that Loved Like a Flower Bouquet opened at #1 in admissions, but the race is close in revenue since Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has had a very high average ticket price in recent weeks due to the strength of its 4DX showings. I'm giving Demon Slayer the slight edge in revenue, which would give it its 16th-consecutive weekend atop the box office, but it'll come down to the actuals tomorrow.

Whatever happens, this is a big weekend for Tokyo Theaters Co. (and Little More) with the success of Loved Like a Flower Bouquet. They likely won the weekend in admissions, giving them one of their few (if not very first) #1 film at the weekend box office, and this is certainly one of their biggest openers ever. I'm not confident enough to say it's their biggest ever without doing some research, but it's up there for them for sure.

The holds for DS, especially in the weekend, have been truly great these past few weeks.

Really surprising that the weekdays abd weekend holds have gotten stronger with the restrictions in place.

I don't think the event will be happening in the form that was previously announced now (in person at Makuhari Messe), we know nothing about it despite it supposedly happening in less than 2 weeks. Tickets havent gone on sale, and that was supposed to happen a few weeks back.

Hopefully they get an online event sorted to replace it. Seems like there will still be news happening with the announcement of a manga art exhibition in Fall today plus more news in Shonen Jump on the game in next week's issue, so here's hoping.
