Most excellent. The Last Jedi was down just 3.4% versus The Force Awakens, and actually managed a higher capacity percentage for the day.

If tomorrow sees a similar result, Episode VIII will be aiming for an opening weekend between ¥1.15-1.20 billion ($10.2-$10.7 million) over the weekend frame, and a 3-day total of ¥1.6-1.7 billion (~$15 million). Its opening weekend may end up slightly below Episode VII, but its 3-day total is going to be higher, that's almost guaranteed.

Strong start to the day. It's an 18% increase over its morning ticket sales yesterday, which is an improvement over Episode VII's 9% increase on Sunday at the same point in time.

And while it's very early, it'll probably remain about flat versus yesterday, and might be able to beat Episode VII today.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Last Jedi - Hourly Admissions Updates
Only one more update to go. Since it's Sunday, though, the final number won't go up much since there are very few showings after 10pm.

The Last Jedi will be down about 7% compared to yesterday, on par with The Force Awakens' Sunday decline two years ago, and down 4% versus Episode VII for the day (almost identical to its Saturday retention of 3.4%).

So, overall, Episode VIII will only be down 3-4% for the weekend frame, and should be up 1-2% for the 3-day. I'll have more data in an hour or so.

That looks accurate, though I personally have it estimated just a tad higher.

>Star Wars: The Last Jedi dominated the box office in its debut weekend, and joins the ¥1 billion opener club. Its debut is estimated to be within 5% of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in both earnings and admissions, but it's likely that its 3-day total came in slightly higher. (1-2%).

It's unlikely Episode VIII will manage the excellent legs that Episode VII achieved, so I'm sure it'll drop in total, but a total over ¥9 billion ($80 million) is likely which puts it on par with Episodes II & III, but I wouldn't rule out a ¥10 billion (~$90 million) total yet. And if it reaches ¥10 billion, it'll join Episodes I & VII to reach uber-blockbuster status within the franchise.

>Yo-Kai Watch: Shadowside - Resurrection of the Demon King, the fourth film in the franchise, experienced another steep decline in the series, droping over 30% once again with this entry. The good news is that each film has been developing slightly stronger legs each year, and I believe this one will over its predecessor as well, but its ceiling is still going to be "just" ¥2.5 billion ($22/23 million).

There was no doubt that the Yo-Kai Watch film franchise would decline each year, similar to the start of the Pokemon film franchise, but unlike the Pokemon films, each film is dropping significantly more from the last with no signs of stabilizing. I don't know what Level 5 has in store for the franchise, but they'll need something to spark renewed interest (like Nintendo does with new Pokemon generation of games) in the films.

>The 8-Year Engagement got off to a solid start, and romantic films released in mid-December always develop very, very good legs. This debut could be enough to result in a total near ¥2 billion ($17/18 million) this time of year. This will be one of Shochiku's highest grossers in awhile.

>Destiny: The Tale of Kakamura experienced an excellent second weekend hold, and after some strong weekdays as well, it appears it'll be the leggy film of the season. Almost every December has a film that develops incredible legs (10+ multiplier), so this will probably be the one of 2017. A total over ¥2.5 billion ($22/23 million) looks good now, and ¥3 billion ($26/27 million) could be in play.

Star Wars Box-Office History

Opening Weekends (3-Day/Previews Included):
¥1.879 billion / 1,357,977 [758] - Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
¥1.650 billion / 1,075,000 [???] - Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) *Estimate*
¥1.619 billion / 1,044,330 [958] - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
¥1.604 billion / 1,138,689 [639] - Star Wars: Episode II - Attack on the Clones (2002)

Note: The opening weekends for the original trilogy are unknown, as is the opening weekend for Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, which is surprising. However, Episode I reportedly sold 500,000+ tickets on its first day, and if Sunday behaved the same way then as it does today, it should have sold 1.1/1.2 million tickets on its opening weekend.

Totals:
01. ¥12.70 billion ($109.9 million) / 8.30 million - Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
02. ¥11.63 billion ($96.3 million) / 7.48 million - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
03. ¥9.35 billion ($78.4 million) / 6.80 million - Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
04. ¥9.17 billion ($82.7 million) / 6.60 million - Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
05. ¥6.58 billion ($33.9 million) / 6.87 million - Star Wars: Episode I - A New Hope (1978) *Estimate*
06. ¥5.30 billion ($22.2 million) / 4.85 million - Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)
07. ¥4.95 billion ($21.9 million) / 4.90 million - Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

I think they'll temporary withdraw from Yokai and go all in with the new Inazuma Eleven (which previously paused also due to franchise fatigue).

Fox estimates $1.3m ($6m cumulative) which I hope they're right ;)

They are almost exactly correct. The second weekend gross is technically $12,000 shy, when rounded, of $1.3 million, but close enough. The important thing is that the total is right.

Weekend Actuals will be up soon.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi fell a bit, dropping 9.6% in revenue and 7.9% in admissions versus the ~4% estimate from yesterday. Its 3-day total also comes in "below" its predecessor, which I was confident it would not, but only by a mere 0.1% (seriously). And in admissions it was actually "up" by, you guessed it, 0.1% in admissions (seriously). It was almost an identical 3-day weekend for both films.

>Star Wars: The Last Jedi debuted atop the box office, this year going unchallenged. Episode VIII in the franchise sold 737,467 admissions over the weekend frame across 937 screens, and 1,058,269 admissions over the 3-day weekend. The weekend frame itself is down 9.6% in revenue and 7.9% in admissions versus Star Wars: The Force Awakens, while the 3-day total in revenue is also down, by a mere 0.1%, but its admissions are actually up... by 0.1%.

Overall, this is a very encouraging debut (especially the 3-day result), and while I highly doubt this one will develop the legs that Episode VII achieved, it should still be good for a ¥9-10 billion ($80-90 million) total with a slight chance of exceeding the ¥10 billion milestone. The Star Wars franchise is pretty consistent in their respective totals, typically selling around 7 million admissions, and this one should follow suit.

>Yo-Kai Watch: Shadowside - Resurrection of the Demon King, the fourth film in the franchise, experienced another steep decline in the series, selling 355,230 admissions over the weekend on 366 screens. This is a harsh 35% decline versus last year's film. The only good news for this film franchise is that each film has been developing slightly stronger legs over the last, and I believe that'll be the case once again, but the ceiling here is still going to be "just" ¥2.5 billion ($22/23 million) and it'll probably fall short of that figure.

>The 8-Year Engagement got off to a good start, selling 203,803 admissions over the weekend frame across 320 screens (and 217,341 after limited previews). Romantic films released in mid-December always develop very, very good legs, so this debut could be enough to result in a total near ¥2 billion ($17/18 million) this time of year. This will be one of Shochiku's highest grossing films in awhile.

>Murder on the Orient Express dropped a bit harder than I was expecting, but a strong set of weekdays is encouraging, and a total of at least ¥1.5 billion ($13 million) is certainly still in play. Not exactly a success, but solid nonetheless.

>Fullmetal Alchemist just wasn't able to stabilize in the slightest and sees another major drop in its third weekend of release. It's just barely going to crawl over the ¥1 billion milestone,
definitely one of the biggest disappointments of 2017, unfortunately, and a rare miss from Warner Bros. distribution of domestic films.

>IT dropped hard in its seventh weekend of release, but still managed to hang on in the Top 10, and is ever so close to the ¥2 billion milestone, which it'll reach on Monday or Tuesday. This was a big success for Warner Bros., and joins a small list of horror films that reached the ¥2 billion mark as well.
