Hi corpse, what's the final admissions tally of In This Corner of the World?

I haven't seen a final admissions figure, but its total was reported back in June (8 months after its release) to have exceeded ¥2.5 billion ($22/23 million) and 2 million admissions. Back in the Spring (March), reports came out saying it exceeded 1.9 million admissions, so it took another 3 months to sell ~100,000 more, probably meaning it finished between 2.0-2.1 million admissions.

The film had a spectacular run, easily one of the most impressive ever (top 5/10 all-time, in my opinion).

It spent its first 8 weeks in the Top 10 (even cracking the Top 5 once or twice) despite being in limited release (68 screens). It would later expand beyond 200 screens; such an expansion is incredibly rare, especially from an independent distributor, and would end up with a multiplier over 53 (53.4 at the very least). But, since it debuted as a limited release and later expanded beyond that status, I don't include it on my best multipliers list since I restrict that to wide releases.

And, of course, it upset Your Name. at the 40th Japan Academy Prize Ceremony to win Best Animated Film of 2016.

Takeshi Kitano is pretty awesome. What's your favorite film, either directed by or starring him?

It would have to be Beyond Outrage. It improves on its predecessor, and I'd give it an A-. His earlier films like Sonatine and Boiling Point are good and violent, but show inexperience. And I have yet to see Violent Cop, which by the sounds of it will be awesome. Also not see Zatoichi. :|

How about you?

I've always enjoyed his character in Battle Royale. I like him in Anata e, Hana-bi, and the mentioned Outrage films.

Battle Royale is one of those films I saw years ago and liked it but do not vividly remember it, so I'm going to watch it again.

A bit late posting this, but Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel Ch.1 - Presage Flower managed to crack October's Biggest Opening Weekend Top 10 Chart -- a nice accomplishment for the month. Will we see any more films this month make the list?

American Made opens this weekend and while Tom Cruise has had success in this month (see two of his films above) and continues to be a reliable draw in Japan, I'm not expecting it to impact this list. I think it may do somewhat well on its own though.

Blade Runner 2049, debuting in two weeks, has generated a solid amount of buzz online, and Harrison Ford should help attract some moviegoers. Good reviews will also help, but its poor box office results in the U.S. and select other markets could deter some. The original film also doesn't appear to have been a hit when it was released (it missed the Top 16 for the year), but I don't know if it was a success on home video or not. We'll see; it's a bit of a wild card.

Fun October Fact?: October is the overall weakest month of the Japanese Box Office, having never produced a blockbuster film. The month also holds the record for the most lowest-grossing Top 10 weekends. Its opening weekends are certainly unimpressive compared to every other month (a measly four films have managed to crack ¥500 million) as well.

Very crowded weekend ahead.

Mix appears to be the slight favorite to come out on top, however, Fate/stay in its second weekend and the debuting American Made are certainly in contention as well. Unless one of them manages to breakaway from the pack today (Sat.), we'll probably have to wait until late Sunday to project where each film will rank.

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K will likely settle for fourth place, but looks to earn a decent enough debut.

The bottom of the Top 10 will be very competitive with several films targeting a ¥65-85 million range. I wouldn't be surprised if films 7th-10th are ¥5-10 million (less than $100,000) apart come Monday. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Ch. I - Koudou has a strong pre-sales advantage, but it's the only limited release here and will probably drop hard on Sunday -- still, I'm expecting it to narrowly beat the others at the bottom. Atomic Blonde will be trying to get as close to the Top 5 as possible so it doesn't look even more disappointing, but it doesn't look good.

>Mix, the ping-pong romantic-comedy directed by Junichi Ishikawa, comes out on top with a respectable debut. The opening is high enough to guarantee a total above ¥1 billion (~$10 million). The critical reception is good, as are the audience scores, so maybe it could leg its way to a ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million) total.

>American Made and The Disastrous Life of Saiki K are in a very close contest for second place. The former probably came in slightly below expectations, while the latter likely came in slightly above expectations.

>Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel, Ch. I - Presage Flower fell hard, which isn't surprising, though its drop is higher than other comparable anime films, such as Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale from earlier this year. Its ticket prices are well above average, and while I don't think it made the Top 3, it could still be in consideration.

>The holdovers were hit hard by screen/showtime cuts, resulting in some steep drops over the weekend. War of the Planet of the Apes hold, or lack thereof, is particularity harsh and may have just ruined its chances of reaching the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone.

>Mix, the ping-pong romantic-comedy directed by Junichi Ishikawa, comes out on top with a respectable 179,623 admissions sold across 276 screens over the weekend. The opening is high enough to guarantee a total above ¥1 billion (~$10 million), and the critical reception is good that it could leg its way to a ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million) total.

>The Disastrous Life of Saiki K was perhaps the biggest "success" this weekend, selling an impressive 155,882 admissions over the weekend on 275 screens. The live-action adaptation of the manga is a co-production with Asmik Ace, but it is Sony's second biggest debut of the year behind Spider-Man: Homecoming.

>American Made had to settle for third place, selling 133,838 admissions over the weekend on 291 screens. This is an okay opening, though it does comes in below Cruise's last couple films. A ¥1 billion (~$10 million) total is doable, but it's far from a lock.

>Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel, Ch. I - Presage Flower fell hard, which isn't surprising, though its drop is higher than other comparable anime films, such as Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale from earlier this year. It could have some giveaways or special events in the coming weekends, which is typical of the genre, so it could recover as a result.

>War of the Planet of the Apes fell much harder than its predecessor in its second weekend, and will probably miss the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone now -- very disappointing result for the third film in the Apes franchise.

>Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, Ch. I - Koudou hasn't had its actual figure released yet, which is becoming a trend for Showgate releases for some reason, but it came in ninth place in ticket sales. So for now, I'm leaving its estimate above and will update it when/if its actual is released.

>Atomic Blonde, as Algren put it, could be renamed Atomic Bomb. It certainly wasn't expected to do much, though, but debut in tenth place on 44,528 admissions over the weekend frame (69,065 since opening on Friday) is very poor.

I wouldn't say that. There are a few Hollywood actresses who can carry a film, and many domestic actresses as well.

I'm sure Charlize Theron is a somewhat recognizable face to moviegoers, but probably nothing more and certainly not a draw on her own. And the film was marketed primarily around her, so that wouldn't have helped it garner any attention. The film itself also underperformed in the U.S. and elsewhere prior to its release in Japan, which would have hurt it as well. Basically, there wasn't anything really going for it.

As for Hollywood female draws: Angelina Jolie is a major draw in Japan, the biggest Hollywood actress box office draw by far, and arguably only behind Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp in overall box office draw ability.

Some other Hollywood actresses who have proven to carry films, consistently, on primarily their name alone in a lead role include: Milla Jovovich, Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster, and Anne Hathaway. I kind of want to add Cameron Diaz, but she hasn't really been the primary lead in any of her successful films in the market; she's at least the co-star in many of them, though, so she might have a little draw ability solely on her name.

Milla Jovovich? Isn't it the Resident Evil brand that carries those films?

I think some of her solo movies also did well in Japan even though RE is a bigger brand her being the constant in that franchise have given her popularity with audience there.

She has solo films? I know of that one called something like Faces in the Crowd but did not know she had others. I'd be surprised if they were released in Japan, let alone successful.

Japan has been the #1 international market (and #1 overall for some) for all but a couple of her films after the release of the first Resident Evil film, that she's either a lead role or supporting character (featured on the poster) in:

The Fourth Kind
Cymbeline*
A Perfect Getaway
The Three Musketeers (2011)*
Stone*
45*
Ultraviolet
Resident Evil
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Resident Evil: Extinction
Resident Evil: Afterlife*
Resident Evil: Retribution*

*#1 overall market.

I don't think the Resident Evil film franchise would have continued its consistency, and growth, in the market either if Jovovich had been recast at some point, or even if another actress had originally been cast in the role.

Milla Jovovich is also simply popular in Japan, too, outside of the box office/film. She visits the country regularly, does TV interviews/appearances, promotes various subjects such as NJPW (Japan Pro Wrestling), TV Tokyo anime programs, and street fashion.

Nah. Around here Milal Jovovich is basically a synonim for RE films. You can't have one without the other.

Will Despicable Me 3 end up passing Fantastic Beasts to become #2 of the year? It's almost there, but I'm not sure how much longer it will be in theaters.

Yes, probably after this upcoming weekend. It's so close that it'd have to lose all of its theaters almost immediately for it to miss. As of last weekend, it's still playing at 100 locations, so it'll still be playing for a couple more weeks, at the very least.

The idea I have of Japanese girls is being very delicate and pretty. But seems strong foreign (almost manly) women are popular in Japan. Jolie and Jovovich kind of have similar builds, and are both action chicks.

It should do "well" for a horror film. Horror films just aren't popular at the box office in Japan, almost never making the Top 10, but as you mentioned, the buzz that it's generated in the U.S. and some other markets should benefit it. Maybe ¥1-2 billion ($10-20 million)? That doesn't seem like much, sure, but I can't even recall the last horror film to get anywhere close to ¥2 billion.

Sorry for missing the Weekend Forecast today.

Blade Runner 2049 debuts this weekend and is doing okay. It seems headed for around ¥250 million ($2.2/2.3 million) or so. Depending on its actual, and audience reception, it'll probably be aiming for ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million). Not particularly good, but not exactly bad either.

Overall, this year's October has been solid. It didn't produce any actual hits, but it will have somewhere between 6-9 films achieve the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone -- definitely worth noting if it's on the high end of that range.

>Blade Runner 2049 debuts atop the box office as expected, though it certainly didn't impress. This estimated debut should be enough to get the film above the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone, thus giving October another ¥1 billion entry, but that's gotta be disappointing for Sony.

>The latest Precure film, something like the 15th theatrical release or something (I'll check tomorrow), had a respectable start, one that should be on the higher end of debuts for the franchise over the past few years -- it may have even ranked #1 over the weekend in terms of admissions. Could this be the film to finally get the series back to the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone?

>Mix enjoyed a very good second weekend hold, benefiting from the strong audience reception the film has achieved. If it continues to hold well over the next couple weeks, then a total of ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million) is in play and makes it a contender for highest-grossing film for October 2017.

>My Teacher comes in fifth place based on estimates with an opening that's pretty underwhelming considering the significant release (widest opener this weekend) and strong marketing push the film received. Even with good/great legs, reaching the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone is very unlikely.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (10/28-29)
Apologies for the lack of updates the past week. My JLPT is next month, so I won't be spending too much time here for the next 4/5 weeks.

I'll post last Weekend's Actuals later this evening along with this Weekend's Actuals, followed by the Yearly Chart Updates thereafter.

And regarding this weekend, a few notes:

>Thor: Ragnarok debuted in first place, making it only the second non-Spider-Man/Avengers Marvel or DC film to ever take the top spot at the Japanese box office (Doctor Strange was the first earlier this year). The third Thor film opened 24% higher than its predecessor, and 78% higher than the first film in the franchise.

List of Marvel/DC #1 Debuts: Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok. Yes, no DC film has ever debuted at #1 in Japan, not unless one of the 70/80s Superman films or the 1989 Batman did it.

>It came in second place and achieved one of the biggest debuts for any horror film. I can recall one or two Sadako (Ring) films opening higher this decade, and there's probably a couple other horror films from last decade that it trailed, but it's mighty impressive. I'll do some research to see how it compares to other horror films; I'm thinking it's a Top 5 debut for the horror genre.
