These are the dates I am interested in and the movie . So, A Good Day to Die Hard is being released in Japan at the same time as the rest of the markets, which is unusual for Japan, they usually get movies months later, just look at Ghost Rider 2, Taken 2 and Looper.

Nothing on The Last Stand and Bullet to the Head yet I see. Hmmm.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2013) December Predictions
Popular franchise or known source material films are sometimes released at the same time as the US. And the Die Hard franchise has always been popular here.

Films that the public aren't really familiar with that are released at the same time as the US usually bomb or disappoint (John Carter and Battleship are a couple examples from last year). Delaying their releases to allow the public to read reviews, see how it performed overseas, etc. often helps increase awareness and promotion for the film (Intouchables and The Avengers are examples from last year). This helped The Lord of the Ring films do well in the market by releasing them in the Spring after the critical acclaim and box office came in from other markets. It's probably going to be a mistake on Warner Bros. side by giving The Hobbit a day-and-date release in Japan instead of a delayed (Spring) release.

Are the Japanese a big review-reading nation then?

Well, you have to take Japan's population into consideration here. Almost 1/4 people are 65 or older now.

Where as in the US and probably most markets 18-30 year olds are the biggest moviegoers, in Japan the biggest demographic is 35-45 year olds. They don't rush out and see films which is one reason why Japan is such a leggy market. Teens and young adults (the demographic least concerned about reviews, reception), go to the movies less frequently than even people over 40 in Japan.

According to this poster....it's released 27th April. But I have heard about a 31st March opening. But that's a Sunday, so I guess I should believe the poster.

Sounds good. :D

Ah ok, I always did wonder why Japan was such a leggy market.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2013) December Predictions
Age isn't the only reason why Japan is very leggy, but I think it's the #1 reason.

Age Demographics (2011): Japan (United States)

Age Structure:
0-14 years: 13.1% (20.1%) -7.0%
15-64 years: 64% (66.8%) -2.8%
65+: 22.9% (13.1%) +9.8%

Median Age:
Male - 43.2 years (35.6 years) +7.6 years
Female - 46.7 years (38.2 years) +8.5 years
Total - 44.8 years (36.9 years) +7.9 years

Life Expectancy:
Male - 80.6 years (76.1 years) +4.5 years
Female - 87.4 years (81.1 years) +6.3 years
Total - 83.9 years (78.5 years) +5.4 years

Countries with the Oldest Population 2011 (65+):
Japan - 22.9%
Germany - 20.6%
Italy - 20.3%
Sweden - 19.7%
Greece - 19.6%
Austria - 18.2%
Bulgaria - 18.2%
Portugal - 18%
Belgium - 18%
Finland - 17.8%

It would be interesting to see if older populated countries are leggier markets than younger populated countries because I can't think of a country leggier than Japan. Of course, some countries report weekend grosses as different days if the week so that's a pretty big variable, but it could still be done I think.

Surely comparing how much of a movies' total gross was made by weeked 1, weekend 2, weekend 3 and so on would be a useful way to find out. Japan, Germany, France, UK etc. all report to Sunday.

It's pretty obvious that healthy, developed nations live longer and therefore have leggier box office. But how much more leggier is the question.

All films did very well yesterday with audiences taking full advantage of ¥1,000 ($12) day (40% off general admission fee), the 1st of every Month at the majority of cinemas in the country. 007: Skyfall and Evangelion 3.0 saw many sell outs or filled at least half of their seats at most locations.

As long as Sunday is steady, 007: Skyfall will probably break ¥500 million ($6 million+).

Sunday was as expected much lower than Saturday for nearly ever film this weekend because of ¥1,000 Day.

It doesn't look like 007: Skyfall was able to hold steady Sunday and may have missed ¥500 million for the weekend. Regardless, it's a very good debut (second best among the recent Bond films) and will lock up ¥3 billion ($37 million). And with what I expect will be good WOM this time around (it's predecessor had the worst multiplier for a wide release in decades) plus the New Year boost in may push ¥3.5 billion ($43 million).

Nice drop for Evangelion 3.0. It's weekend drops are still better than One Piece Film Strong World, it's only comparison, and the total should be around ¥3.7/3.8 billion ($46/47 million) after three weeks.

Good start for Inazuma Eleven Go!. There were some doubt whether this one could gross ¥1 billion ($12.5 million) after it's predecessor dropped 35% from the original film, but this opening should get it there. Another case of switching back to 2D being beneficial.

Top Grossing James Bond Films:

1 Die Another Day (Fox) ¥2.35 billion
2 Casino Royale (Sony) ¥2.21 billion
3 The World is Not Enough (UIP) ¥1.99 billion
4 Quantum of Solace (Sony) ¥1.98 billion
5 Octopussy (CIC) ¥1.92 billion (dis. income)
6 A View to a Kill (UIP) ¥1.30 billion (dis. income)
7 Goldeneye (UIP) ¥1.00 billion (dis. income)

Every other Bond film, at least since 1980, failed to reach ¥1 billion. Skyfall will have no problem beating Die Another Day. It won't have toxic WOM and disastrous legs like Quantum of Solace. There's not much to adjust for inflation either since it doesn't really exist in Japan. Tickets today are just 8% higher than the 80's.

I only post this at the end of the year because you won't find a single weekend without at least one movie in the Top 10 that isn't adaptaed from a manga. And the Yearly Charts are always full of manga adaptations. This year there are 9 in the Top 20, including the year's biggest film, Umizaru: Brave Hearts, and biggest breakout, Thermae Romae.

Coming up there is: Today, I Started Loving You 12/8, One Piece 12/15, Blue Exorcist 12/28, Ooku 12/22, Hunter X Hunter 1/12, Berserk 2/1, Star Driver 2/9, A Certain Magical Index 2/23.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2013) Wknd Estimates (Skyfall, Inazuma
December 1-2
Weekend Ranking:

Image

1 (-) 007: Skyfall (Sony) NEW!
2 (1) Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo (T-Joy) Week 3
3 (-) Inazuma Eleven Go! Vs. Danball Senki W: The Movie (Toho) NEW!
4 (2) Holy Scripture of Evil (Toho) Week 4
5 (3) The Floating Castle (Toho/Asmik Ace) Week 5
6 (4) Spirit Helper (Toho) Week 3
7 (7) A Chorus of Angels (Toei) Week 5
8 (6) Tug-Of-War! (Toho) Week 2
9 (5) Trouble with the Curve (Warner Bros.) Week 2
10 (8) Crow's Thumb (20th Century Fox) Week 2

007: Skyfall opened on 584 screens and debuted to ¥454,639,650 ($5.56 million) on 398,754 admissions over the weekend. A little lower than estimates, but still a good start. It's 21% behind Quantum of Solace's opening weekend, but it'll have much better legs (kinda impossible to have the "legs" Quantum did) and still become the highest grossing Bond film to date. I'm projecting Skyfall will finish with ¥3.1-3.3 billion ($38-41 million). That'd be a good start to Hollywood's year, but let's hope they won't falter again this year. After the successful start of 2012 with Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol last December (nothing else Hollywood offered came close), Hollywood went on to have their weakest year in 15 years.

Inazuma Eleven Go! Vs. Danball Senkei W: The Movie earned ¥173,557,500 ($2.12 million) on 172,222 admissions playing on 268 screens. This one skews younger so tickets aren't much higher than ¥1,100 ($13) normally, but ¥1,000 day (Saturday) really effected it bringing it's avg. ticket price to just ¥1,007 ($12.3). That's the lowest avg. I've seen since tracking the box office. Anyway, it's a decent start (better than last year's film for the weekend frame) that may yield ¥1 billion ($12.5 million) in the end.

Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo cleared 2.5 million admissions and ¥3.5 billion after just three weeks in release. WBS (TV Tokyo) reported a more accurate figure of ¥3.68 billion ($46.1 million) after three weeks last night. It should pass Evangelion 2.0 before Saturday (12/8), breaking ¥4 billion ($50 million), and will soon surpass The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki to become the #1 animated film of 2012. It's keeping a steady pace and is still on track for ¥5-6 billion ($63-75 million). Depending on where it lands in that range, it'll finish as the 2nd-5th biggest film of 2012.

What was so special about Spirited Away? Is there any chance a movie ever beats that? I'm guessing that's the biggest grossing movie ever in Japan, animated or otherwise...

Kinda like Miyazaki's Avatar (only actually good). He was already coming off having the highest grossing film in Japan's history before at the time in 1997 (Princess Mononoke).

It's really doubtful anything will ever beat or come close to Spirited Away. The two biggest films of the past 5 years, Ponyo (also Miyazaki) and Avatar didn't come close.

Ponyo did 51.0% of it's Box Office, and 54.8% of it's admissions.
Avatar did 51.3% of it's Box Office, and 43.4% of it's admissions.

Nothing compares to Hayao Miyazaki n Japan (he has 4 of the Top 10 films All-Time and 3 of them in the Top 5).

He also has a new film that is rumored to come out this Summer, his first since Ponyo in 2008.

'Evangelion 3.0' moved into the Top 10 and probably the Top 5 after next week.

'Holy Scripture' is having some of the best legs in the past month and is going to cruise to ¥2 billion. It may even have enough strength to reach ¥2.5 billion.
