>Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel II - Lost Butterfly debuts atop the box office in a big way, nearly reaching ¥500 million over the weekend frame. The second film in the series sold 276,795 admissions over the weekend on only 131 screens, achieving an incredible average ticket price of ¥1,772 ($16.34). After Monday, it has sold 363,080 admissions. The sequel came in 18.8% higher than its predecessor, and it should finish above the ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) mark and has a shot at reaching ¥2 billion ($20 million) as well.

>Bohemian Rhapsody holds... well, increases, in its tenth weekend of release, selling a further 272,344 admissions over the weekend frame. It achieved the third biggest tenth weekend gross ever recorded, and its ten week multiplier has now reached 26.63, the fifth highest multiplier ever recorded. It has sold 6,836,433 admissions after 67 days in release. There's still no sign of it showing any signs of slowing down, at least noticeably, so the sky continues to be the limit. At the very least, it'll probably exceed ¥12 billion (~$110 million), but don't be surprised if it goes higher.

>Ralph Breaks the Internet is still performing pretty well, and outgrossed the original over the weekend. It has sold 2,641,967 admissions after 25 days in release. Expect it to finish right around the ¥4 billion ($36/37 million).

>Dragon Ball Super: Broly also keeps doing very well at the box office, and it's now just over ¥100 million away from outgrossing Resurrection F to become the highest grossing film in the franchise. It has sold 2,823,219 admissions after 32 days in release. I expect a bit of a free fall from this point forward, and still expect it to fall barely shy of ¥4 billion, around ¥3.9 billion ($35/36 million), but it's doable if Toei keeps it going.

>Creed II's weekend gross remains an estimate, but its four-day cumulative total is posted above. Overall, a bit of a disappointing debut, but it's much higher then the first film due to a wider release, and if it can reach ¥500 million ($4.5 million), I'd consider it a modest success.

And finally, very importantly: the editor of the MovieWalker film website is saying that Bohemian Rhapsody is going to remain a 2018 release, while Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was released close enough to the end of the Japan Box Office fiscal year that it'll be counted as a 2019 release. Sooooo... Congratulations to Bohemian Rhapsody on becoming 2018's Highest Grossing Film!

So the final total for Broly has been creeping up over time. After the second weekend you said it was perhaps on track for ¥3.5 billion so I guess it hasn't been falling as much as expected?

If it can creep up a bit more then there's always a chance it could get to ¥4 billion...maybe.

Makoto Shinkai's Weathering with You is a very strong challenger for that 2019 title. In fact, I would probably be more surprised if that didn't beat Bohemian Rhapsody in gross.

No real numbers for the Gamera films from the 1990s. I would say, however, that $15 million seems too high to me, because that'd suggest a distributor income/total gross that should have been reported. Toho Kingdom's number(s) are probably the more reliable here.

Odd. Toho Kingdom also says its budget was $7 million, meaning The Revenge of Iris would have been a flop if it only grossed in the neighborhood of $5 million. Unless it broke even with home media and merchandise, that goes against the narrative that the trilogy as a whole was successful. It's also odd because Toho would recruit the director of the Gamera trilogy to save the Godzilla franchise in 2001 and Kadokawa Pictures would reboot the series in 2006. Usually when a Gamera film flops, the franchise rests for over a decade as it did after the bad business of 1980's Gamera: Super Monster and 2006's Gamera the Brave.

I never found a number for Mothra with a few quick searches, but I'll ask a few people and see if they have any data available on it.

I don't know if this helps and it probably debunks the 9 million admission claim but I found that "Mothra ranked no.10 in Kinema Junpo's annual box office tally" for its year of release.

Death & Rebirth had a distributor income of ¥1.10 billion, while The End of Evangelion earned a ¥1.45 billion distributor income. There's a pretty accurate method of converting DI into total gross, though, and doing so would result in totals of ~¥1.70 billion (~$13.8 million) and ~¥2.24 billion (~$19.4 million), respectively.

So The End of Evangelion outgrossed Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone? It's by less than two million but still interesting. Combining the gross of the two 90s movies and Rebuild gets you $159.2 million in total gross for the Evangelion films. And using 1.0 as an estimate for the attendance of Death & Rebirth and EoE, I get about 11 to 13 million in attendance for the series.

I know but BR is quite comfortable past 10b mark now and it hasn't stopped even a bit as of now. I see 11b-12b difficult too be topped but just for the comparison sake let's bookmark this discussion

Hi everybody (and to you in particular Corpse)! I've been a lurker here for almost 4 years now, and this thread is one that I regularly follow so I felt I might as well drop by to really express my appreciation for it and how helpful and interesting your data and analyses are to me.

I'm a huge fan of japanese & japanese related media (manga, anime and video games in particular) which is why I also have an account on Myanimelist and Anime News Network. In addition to just enjoying them, I like knowing how well they are doing commercially for various reasons ( how well for example an anime I enjoyed resonated with others, how likely a sequel is and well, also because I'm a stats junkie lol) and there are few places on the web where I can so seamlessly have access to not just the numbers but also such detailed analyses of what they actually mean and how to intepret them (since trying to apply North American standards to Japanese box office would be foolish). All that is thanks to the incredible work you do here so really, thank you for that.

Now, I have a question regarding Titanic. Everytime that you post the All-time attendance and gross lists, I'm always a bit perplexed by just how high its average ticket price is. Dividing its gross by its admissions yields a price of about ¥1557 which is insane. I know that there has been virtually no inflation in Japan but that number is way higher than even movies released around the same time as it ( like Mononoke). In fact, from your lists, it seems like the only movies with similar or higher prices are those which where majorly boosted by 3D (such as Avatar or Alice in Wonderland) or have dedicated fanbases willing to pay higher for premium formats ( like the latest Fate Stay Night movie). None of those apply to Titanic so what gives?

Thanks for all the kind words, and welcome to the forum. :)

As for your question about Titanic: 16.83 million has always been the reported admissions for the film. The earliest known source for the figure that I am aware of comes from a Nausicaa.net article that sites information received from Kumagai Toru, a journalist for NHK (Japan's national broadcasting organization). Here is my saved archives headlines from September 2001 with the information.

Here is a more recent article from Cinema Today in 2014 when Frozen surpassed Titanic's admissions (again citing 16.83 million), and became the most attended imported film ever.

Now, why was its average ticket price so high? I don't know with certainty, but I can provide some reasons:

1) It's very likely the film skewed heavily adult, meaning it would have had a high average ticket price. Some adult-driven films can approach avg. ticket prices of ¥1,400, sometimes even breaking that mark, but that's still much lower than Titanic's ¥1,557. Reason 2 below may explain this though...

2) The general admission in Japan has been ¥1,500-1,800 for decades. Discounts weren't as prevalent back in 1997/1998 as they are these days, so perhaps most of its audience had no choice but to pay the general fee. The average ticket price in 1997 and 1998 was ¥1,259 and ¥1,264, respectively, which is much lower than both Titanic's and the general fee; however, both of those averages were new records at the time, and they wouldn't be matched or beat again until 2010. It seems likely to me that Titanic could have been the sole reason that 1997s and 1998s average ticket price records held for so long.

3) Given how the film became a huge phenomenon, I wouldn't be too surprised if it received some sort of premium screenings. Of course, there wasn't any 3D/IMAX or anything like that in 1997/1998, but there could have been some other methods used to boost its ticket prices, such as: giveaways (maybe a "My Heart Will Go On" single, or even a Heart of the Ocean necklace?), maybe some meet and greets with the Japanese dub cast, or possibly special ticket bundles, or packages, were available during the peak of its run. None of these seem likely, and I've never heard of anything like this regarding the film, but it does happen in the market.

Is this the first time Dragon Ball screen 'Shout along' version in which the audience can shout 'Go Broly Go Go!' in cinema? It might be the boost Broly need to break ¥4 billion wall, plus JAP nomination and international phenomenal might echo back to domestic release, NA $7 million opening day and it's going to become the first Rotten Tomatoes's certified fresh Dragon Ball film.

Have they released a new version of Broly or something?

Do we get the Weekend Forecast on Friday or Saturday?

I haven't seen anything about it, and it suffered a pretty big screen/showtime cut this weekend, as did everything due to the large number of new films opening (11 in total that are above very limited status).

I post the Weekend Forecast on Friday evenings (EST). I'll have it up in an hour or two. And this appears to be the weekend that Bohemian Rhapsody finally begins its decline. It had its first set of regular drops over the past set of weekdays, and its weekend pre-sales are noticeably down this time. Not saying it's going to plummet or anything, but a "regular" weekend drop is likely in store.

Finally start to see normal signs for BR...

By the end of the weekend it will probably stay flat just to troll us :funny:

>Masquerade Hotel is aiming to really liven the box office up this weekend, likely on track to achieve one of the biggest opening weekends ever for the month of January (if not setting a new record). Directed by Masayuki Suzuki (best known for the incredibly popular Hero TV drama and its movies), a debut above ¥500 million seems all but certain for the mystery murder case film, and it should approach ¥600 million as well. ¥622.2 million is needed to break the January opening weekend record held by 2009's 20th Century Boys - Chapter 2: The Last Hope.

This will be a film to watch even after it opens. The box office doesn't have too many major films released between now and the Spring, and if the audience reception is strong, it could go on to have an impressive run. At the very least, it seems almost a lock to exceed ¥3 billion ($25-30 million) with just a normal run, so expect a finish likely higher than that.

>Bohemian Rhapsody finally appears to be slowing down now. Not only were its recent weekdays "normal", but it lost a good amount of screen/showtimes this weekend, and its pre-sales are also down a fair bit. There hasn't been any big film targeting adult audiences, really, since it opened, so it's very possible Masquerade Hotel may be impacting it some as well. Either way, it'll be on the cusp of the ¥10 billion uber-blockbuster milestone after Sunday.

>Dragon Ball Super: Broly will likely outgross Resurrection F over the weekend to become the highest grossing film in the franchise. Very impressive indeed, and while it's unlikely, there's still a slim shot at reaching the ¥4 billion milestone.

>Touken Ranbu: The Movie is the weekend wild card opener. It's only playing on 111 screens, but it performed very well on Friday and its pre-sales are good this weekend. That said, it's going to be frontloaded I suspect given its audience, so it could quickly fall as the weekend progresses.

>Taxi 5 is a France import released via Asmik Ace. It won't do much, but a Top 10 debut looks doable.

>Glass makes a surprising day-and-date release in the market, but Disney is barely giving it a wide release on 101 screens. It did so-so business on Friday, and pre-sales look decent enough to make the Top 10, but don't be surprised if it just misses and ranks 11th/12th. If it missed the Top 10, then Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will probably round out the Top 10 in its ninth weekend of release.

Oh? Is Broly around ¥3.685 billion as of Friday? So it did about ¥47 million from Tuesday to Friday? I didn't think it would be that high, I thought based on previous Mimorin sales that it'd be more ¥33 million.

I see you added that it did $115 million for the two day, do we know what it did for the three day?
