Oh yes Monday sorry, you said ¥2.75 billion as of Monday.

So you're more confident that it's going to pass Resurrection F than before, that's a good sign then. Probably could be like ¥100 million in front of Resurrection F after the fourth weekend then.

But I suppose this ¥5 billion estimate of there's was just way out of reach then? Is it even gonna reach the ¥4 billion?

After the 8th, is this gonna fall off a cliff like what happens it US after New Years?

¥5 billion was always a pretty big stretch. Studios in Japan like to hype, to create excitement, for a film following a successful debut by projecting certain milestones. I'd say 1 in 5 films actually make the studio "projections" after opening. It's all a marketing ploy to grab headlines, and doesn't mean a film underperformed in any way.

¥4 billion is attainable as long as it doesn't plummet too far from the 8th onward. I'd give it a 50/50 chance. Most films do slow considerably after the New Year period, but films with excellent WOM can still thrive well after the holidays.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: 2019 Begins; New Year Week Daily Ests.
Corpse, are those years English years of the Japanese years? (i.e. does 2016 refer to the Jan-Dec period or Dec 2015 - Nov 2016?)

And of course thank you for providing such a fantastic and reliable source of Japanese BO information!

Post Re: Japan Box Office: 2019 Begins; New Year Week Daily Ests.
December to November. Eiren just waits until late-January to post yearly data due to some films released in November (sometimes even earlier) still doing considerable business, which can determine which year it falls in. They don't wait any longer than the last week of January though, and if a film is still in an undetermined status, they'll note which film, or films, with a current total and update it later on in its appropriate year... I know, why make it so complicated.

It seems that Bohemian Rhapsody's dailies are still ahead of Les Miserables on the same date in the calendar. From 12/30 to the end of its run, Les Miserables went from ¥1.13 billion to ¥5.89 billion. Bohemian Rhapsody was at ¥7.14 billion as of 12/30. Is it realistic to think that maybe Bohemian Rhapsody can add a similar amount (if not more) to surpass ¥12 billion? Or will it begin dropping harder than Les Miserables after the holidays because of burning off significant demand already?

Very interesting, I wasn't aware the older movies had made as much as they did. I'm surprised that Wrath of the Dragon is so low compared to the all the others especially because it followed Fusion Reborn which according to a recent poll is the most popular with people over there.

Also as to why the first three Dragon Ball Z movies made less than ¥1 billion...then all of a sudden Lord Slug jumped to over ¥2 billion? Its not like the series only became popular in 1991.

So it looks like Broly is going to pass Battle of Gods on Thursday then.

Les Miserables was only in release for two weeks when it reached New Year. It's probably unrealistic to expect a similar percentage jump for Bohemian Rhapsody, but I wouldn't rule it out. It's really in a league of its own.

I was actually looking into that briefly, and my only explanation was that the films saw a sudden rise due to the growing popularity of the Dragon Ball Z anime. It debuted in 1989, but most anime typically takes a good year on the air before gaining a base. 1990/1991 were also during the Namek and Frieza sagas, which were very big.

I know Dragon Ball was also popular, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the DBZ anime really propelled the franchise to new heights in popularity.

Well from what I can find, theres a site called Eiren, you probably know it but on that site under 1991 they've got Lord Slug's "distribution revenue" as ¥1.3 billion and Return of Cooler as ¥1.4 billion.

http://www.eiren.org/toukei/1991.html

Meanwhile over on Kanzenshuu they've got those grosses listed under "Net Earnings" so that lines up.

http://www.kanzenshuu.com/movie/dbz-04/

Well they've also got these Net Earnings for the earlier movies as well

Curse of the Blood Rubies - ¥800 million
Sleeping Princess in Devils Castle - ¥800 million
Mystical Adventure - ¥650 million
Dead Zone - ¥800 million
The World's Strongest - ¥1 billion
Tree of Might - ¥800 million

So if the gross your listing scales to those Net Earnings then shouldn't all the movies except maybe Mystical Adventure be over ¥1 billion?

Because why would Lord Sug have grossed over twice as much as The World's Strongest when the Net Earnings are only 30% higher?

Also I don't know if it matters to you at all but seeing as you're very organized with everything I thought I should point out that Lord Slug actually comes before Coolers Revenge.

Used to watched Dragon ball as a child but never really paying attention to this franchise. However, I decided to watch Super Broly as last activity of year 2018. This is my reaction (no spoiler, just hide sexually explicit words)
Spoiler: show
I'm hard all the time. How can an MSM like me missed the show about bara guys fighting with their shirts off for a decade. I want Bardock and Broly to breed me, or the other way around is fine too.

bullza: That is an excellent find! It's very difficult to find numbers for the films that fell below a distributor income (which was used before overall gross before the year 2000) of ¥1 billion. I can now get an fairly accurate gross for all the films I've listed as "sub-¥1 billion". I'll update the list and repost it later this evening, or early tomorrow.

I don't have too much free time today, but I will post Wednesday's Estimates before heading out. Wednesday actually beat Tuesday overall. It's not exactly a rare event, but it is uncommon.

And pookpooi: I'm glad you enjoyed the film. You now have a lot of material to catch up on. ;)

Thank you. I had heard that Resurrection 'F' is 7.3 billion yen WorldWide and wondering if Super Broly will surpass that. I know that worldwide boxoffice will always inaccurate but we can trust if the numbers are from studio itself? But it seems like Dragonball run into a (common) problem of all the big franchise, a canon/non-canon argument. Though at least there's a definite starting point and not random like Saint Seiya or Gundam.

You can check with bullza, but to my understanding, the 1986-1996 films aren't considered canon. But with Toriyama (the creator) working on the new films, and how their characters and stories are included in the anime, I believe the new films are canon.

Yeah Battle of Gods, Resurrection F and Broly are all canon where the previous movies arent.

It should definitely make more than the last one worldwide. They actually said they're aiming for ¥10 billion.

Its being released pretty much everywhere this time. Its got Brazil tomorrow and then Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Peru next week and it just keeps going.

In Thailand the opening weekend for Broly was about 5 times what Resurrection F did there altogether.

The same is pretty much true for domestic music, too, just not quite as extreme. Modern artists still do very well, but when a big name from the past releases new music (which is often in Japan), they often outperform any modern act.

Hong Kong also has an aging population, extreme but not as extreme as in Japan.

Older music acts (both local and foreign pre-2000) have more name recognition than modern artists. They are the ones with sold-out concerts. But modern artists (pre-2010) such as Adele, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and One Direction are the ones topping music sales charts. Between the two places, Japan is more nostalgic. Maybe the older generation in Japan is richer and thus spend more than their HK counterparts.

Corpse, do you have the attendance figures for the Rebuild of Evangelion films? Also, the only source I have for the type of business Mothra (1961) did claims it sold 9 million tickets. Wouldn't that make it one of the most attended Japanese films of all time?

First, welcome to the forum.

Second, here you go:

¥2.00 billion ($18.0 million) / 1.50 million admissions - Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone (2007)
¥4.00 billion ($44.0 million) / 2.90 million admissions - Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance (2009)
¥5.30 billion ($64.0 million) / 3.85 million admissions - Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo (2012)

4.0 (or 3.0+1.0) is supposed to finally be released in 2020. But if you're a fan, you'll know about its history of being delayed. It was originally set for 2013, then 2015, and now 2020.

And third: As for Mothra, what's the source for the 9 million admissions? I've never seen it listed anywhere among the most attended films, and while I'm not disputing it sold that many tickets (1961 was around the peak of the Godzilla and kaiju films), it'd be very unusual for a film like that to be missed.

If it turns out to be true, 9 million admissions would tie it as the 20th most attended film ever.

Here's the updated history with the data bullza provided. :)

Using the standard equation to determine a film's gross from its distributor income (quite accurate from many examples of both gross and income being available), and estimating a USD figure by using the average exchange rate during the first three months of release, we can get close figures of both currencies by doing this.

Dragon Ball Box-Office History

Past Dragon Ball Films (1986-1996):
¥1.22 billion ($6.8 million) - Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies (1986)
¥1.22 billion ($8.0 million) - Dragon Ball: Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle (1987)

Sub-¥1 billion (~$8/9 million) - Dragon Ball Z: The Path to Power (1996)

Opening Weekends:
¥683.9 million ($7.3 million) / 561,098 - Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (2013)

Post Re: Japan Box Office: 2019 Begins; New Year Week Daily Ests.
Thank you very much for the warm welcome and the help!

Toho Kingdom has the 9 million attendance figure and cites the self-published book "Age of the Gods" by Guy Mariner Tucker as its source. I thought it was odd for a film that allegedly did that well not to be listed here or have those numbers available in other places. The site notes two releases, its initial debut in 1961 and a 1974 reissue. But even if it took both releases to reach 9 million it still would make the Top 100 Highest-Grossing Films of All-Time chart.

One more question. Would you consider the anime Godzilla trilogy successful? The deal with Netflix probably covered whatever it cost to produce/market them and I know they were a limited release. But how did those films perform compared to other limited anime releases? Standard business or a disappointment even by those standards?

9 million admissions still wouldn't be enough to get it anywhere near the Top 100 Highest-Grossing Films... Ticket prices were ridiculously low back when it was released (¥85 in 1961). That's 6.4% of today's average ticket price.

If it sold 9 million admissions in 1961, for arguments sake, it would have grossed around ¥765 million (yes, not even ¥1 billion). That number might not be good enough to make the Top 100 films in any given year in modern times. That's why all those 1950s/1960s films that rank so high on the all-time admissions charts are no where to be seen on the highest-grossing charts.

I'll do some digging to see if I can find more on the 9 million admissions for Mothra though.

I mostly considered the Godzilla animated trilogy to be "unsuccessful", but given how Toho didn't seem to expect much from it given the screen counts and such, it may not be considered a disappointment.

My bad. I meant highest-attended. Typed too quickly and didn't proof read. But thanks.

No worries.

It's also hard to compare the animated trilogy to other limited release (or nearly so) anime films. In doing so, I'd consider them an even bigger disappointment, but most limited anime films have diehard fanbases that pay crazy ticket prices to watch them. Godzilla obviously has a lot of fans, but most are older generations and they clearly didn't have interest in the anime trilogy. I don't believe the anime trilogy was suppose to target traditional fans at all, either, though, so... Again, it's hard to determine how "unsuccessful" it was in the end to me.
