It ranked either 12th or 13th, probably 12th. Prince of Legend came in 11th.

I'm going to predict it'll mostly be out of theaters on one of the mid/late-April weekends. A lot of new films open during this time ahead of Golden Week, including a few tentpoles, so holdovers typically experience harsh screen/showtime cuts.

Thanks for this. I meant at what total gross number do you see it finish?

I'm not sure how many theaters Shin Godzilla played in (screen counts is what's tracked in the market instead), but it should have been around 350, plus or minus a few. That's the standard for major tentpoles. However, it was likely 10-15 less than what Godzilla: King of the Monsters is getting because big imported films always receive premium format releases. That allows them to have higher theater counts versus Japanese films to accommodate those showings.

Japanese films are largely just released in the standard format with the exception of certain fanbase-driven films (some fans are willing to pay the extra money), or special films specifically filmed for premium formats (typically just a handful a year).

Well, I expect Bohemian Rhapsody will surpass Jurassic Park (¥12.85 billion) to become the 16th highest-grossing film ever in Japan, but probably not much more. I'd say ¥12.9 billion ($115.5-$116 million). I know that's very close to ¥13 billion, and Fox might want to achieve that milestone, but there's not really a point since it won't climb any higher on the all-time highest-grossing films list.

They'll want to take advantage of the likely huge home video sales sooner rather than later after they delayed it already a couple months ago.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of Moon Exploration holds onto its reign atop the weekend box-office for a fifth-consecutive week, turning what was expected to be a threat to its reign this weekend into a no contest race. The weekend increase allowed the thirty-ninth entry in the series to set a fifth-weekend gross record, besting last year's film. A total above ¥4.5 billion ($40 million+) seems almost guaranteed now, and it has a fair shot at reaching the ¥5 billion ($45 million) milestone.

>Dumbo opened day-and-date with the rest of the world in Japan, but it proved to be an unsuccessful decision. Tim Burton's retelling of the classic Disney film sold a mediocre 144,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 598 screens, and reached 198,569 admissions since opening on Friday. Its debut is by far the lowest among Disney's live-action remakes, down a significant 38% compared to the previous low, The Jungle Book. I was wary to label this debut as a bomb yesterday, but the with actual coming in below ¥200 million, and a total of ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) likely being its ceiling, I'd now rule it a bomb unless it spawns miraculous legs somehow.

>Tonde Saitama held tremendously well once again, and after six weeks of release is close to exceeding the ¥3 billion milestone. The film has now exceeded a multiplier of 11, and could eventually reach 13 or even 14. It's the best performer so far this year, leg wise, and should remain one of 2019's top performances.

>Captain Marvel posted, perhaps surprisingly given its free-fall since opening day, a good hold in its third weekend. It really needed this hold, too, in order to clear the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone, and while it's not guaranteed yet, it should eventually get there.

>Green Book is now just over ¥200 million away from outgrossing The King's Speech to become the highest-grossing Best Picture Winner of the decade.

>Ninja Drones? hasn't had its weekend actual released yet, so its numbers above remain estimates.

>Bohemian Rhapsody ended up increasing in its twenty-first weekend of release, and made a play at re-entering the top 10 once again. It surpassed Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace to become the 17th highest-grossing film of all-time over the weekend. Next up is Jurassic Park with ¥12.85 billion.

Corpse, do you think it would be possible to make a highest-attended films of all time list but adjusted to the per-capita population of the time? I'm not suggesting you make it, just do you think there's any merit in doing so? Because I have noticed that mostly every year has a new film reach high on the list, and I can't help think that as the population increases each year, this is becoming easier and easier to achieve. While your all-time attended list is the most objective way of showing a film's performance as is (and especially compared to anything in the US market), might there be another slice of data we can apply to it to make it even more accurate?

The one thing to note here is that Japan's population has been virtually unchanged since 1990. It was 123mil then and is 126 mil now, and actually trending very slight downwards over the last decade, not up. So a per capita adjustment won't show a meaningful effect until you're in the mid-early 80s.

Doesn't mean it's not worth doing, just means that it'll result in barely any change in the rankings over the last thirty years.

Yeah, I thought the population didn't change too much. But I was also thinking that they are an ageing population so it might have an effect at some point further back, especially when films like Tokyo Olympiad are being overtaken by Frozen and Spirited Away.

So judging by the Weekend Charts the 1st quarter is up 19 % compared to 2018... That's really great...

Yeah, so far the year is performing very well.

January: Bohemian Rhapsody continued to play very well at the start of the year; Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel II - Lost Butterfly had a very impressive opening; and Masquerade Hotel delivered in high-fashion, setting a new January opening weekend record.

February: With the exception of the third weekend of the month, the other three saw notably good debuts in The Seven Conferences, Aquaman, and Tonde Saitama. All three of these films, especially Saitama, performed on the high-end of expectations.

March: Doraemon swept all five weekends in the month, and while that may seem like everything else under-performed, that's not true with the exception of Dumbo this past weekend. Doraemon is just very difficult to top about every year throughout March (typically requires a blockbuster to be scheduled), and this year's film is performing around franchise peak. Precure Miracle Universe set a franchise high for its Spring releases; Captain Marvel debuted on par with the other top Marvel/DC films outside of the Avengers/Spider-Man franchises; and Green Book is going to become the biggest Best Picture winner of the decade.

There have been some poor performances this year like Alita: Battle Angel and Bumblebee (both were more or less expected to disappoint though), and Dumbo this past weekend, but just about everything else is more than making up for them.

And looking ahead, the box-office should continue to thrive through the Spring and into the Summer, and then things become really, really interesting once July and August rolls around.

I have a related percentage chart (that enzo1988 here helped finish) comparing the admissions of the most-attended films to the country's population at the time of release, if that is sufficient enough, here it is:

That's perfect. Thanks. It seems there really isn't much change besides Tokyo Olympiad at #1. I guess it just levels the playing field for older films a bit.

I wouldn't expect it to.

There is nothing going on this weekend. There is rarely a notable film that opens the first weekend of April since it's after Spring Break and three weeks before Golden Week, so the beginning of April generally isn't a good time for anything to do well. Drops are also a bit harsh this weekend, especially for younger skewing films.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of Moon Exploration will achieve its sixth-consecutive week atop the weekend box-office.

>Vice is debuting this weekend in limited release and might sneak into the bottom of the top 10, but it would probably require one of the current top 10 films to drop 50%+ to make it.

This weekend is serving as the calm before the storm that's to come next weekend, when Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire opens. It was already very likely to achieve the biggest opening weekend of 2019 overall, but with the dead/weak market it'll be opening in, it could really make its impact felt in the record books.
