Why was Stand By Me, Doraemon such an outlier?

As in it appears that all the others had similar multipliers (I only eye-balled it), but that had a far better multiplier, becoming easily the biggest Doraemon to date.

It served as a special release for the franchise. It was the first, and only, 3D CGI release in the series, as well as the first to open during the Summer. Acclaimed director Takashi Yamazaki also directed the project, and the film received great reviews and a strong audience reception.

It was able to draw in a crowd outside of the usual families that turn out every March for the annual franchise.

Ah okay thanks. Interesting that a special release could get such a higher total.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Doraemon 39 Debuts
Japanese audiences pay close attention to a films' production. If an acclaimed director is attached, or say if the creator(s) of the source material is directly involved (screenplay, character design, etc.), they'll be a noticeable jump at the box office for that release.

We've seen it occur on a more regular basis with other long-running (albeit far newer) animated franchises like Dragon Ball and One Piece, where their respective authors have gotten involved with the films. They used to be annual franchises, but both have moved away from that and now see a new film every 3/4 years instead with their authors being directly involved in the process. As a result of this, the recent films in these two franchises have become the highest grossing in their respective franchise (the last three Dragon Ball films are the Top 3 in the franchise, and the same is true for One Piece).

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Doraemon 39 Debuts
About Doraemon Stand by Me, instead of creating a new adventure story like others, Stand by Me select 4 out of 1000+ original manga chapters that are the most important, the most dramatic and stitched it together to make a one story. One could say that Stand by Me serve as both an introduction portal to Doraemon and represent the very best of this franchise.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of Moon Exploration, the thirty-ninth entry in the long-running franchise, easily claimed the #1 spot over the weekend box-office, and delivered the biggest opening weekend so far in 2019. This, of course, comes to no one's surprise since the series always kicks off the Spring box-office season in a big way every year.

This year's release did see a decrease from last year's film, but it still achieved the third biggest opening weekend in the franchise, selling 586,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 382 screens, and reaching 645,685 admissions since opening on Friday. Expect a total around the ¥4.5 billion ($40 million) mark. However, there isn't too much for families/children this Spring (no Disney or Illumination this year), so it's possible legs could end up slightly higher than the franchise norm, and this year's film could become only the third entry in the franchise to reach the ¥5 billion milestone.

>Tonde Saitama saw a second weekend increase, but I wasn't paying close enough attention to it to see why. My guess is it had some stage greetings with the cast at some point over the weekend, but regardless, a second weekend increase is always great. It's about guaranteed to exceed ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) now, and could approach the ¥2 billion ($20 million) milestone.

>Green Book performed very well in its opening weekend, selling 154,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 180 screens, and it reached 234,428 admissions since opening on Friday. This is the highest debut for the Academy Award for Best Picture winner since 2010's The King's Speech, and is 95% higher than last year's The Shape of Water. I imagine legs will be good/great, and see a total around ¥1.5 billion ($15 million).

>Alita: Battle Angel fell hard over its sophomore frame, and as a result, will likely only finish slightly above the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone. It enjoyed a so-so opening weekend, but will end up with a disappointing, perhaps bomb-worthy, total.

>Bohemian Rhapsody... following its many Oscar wins (and Best Foreign-Language win at the Japan Academy Prize) experienced a significant boost over the past week, and stayed nearly flat versus last weekend. It is now the 19th highest grossing film ever, surpassing The Wind Rises. There's really nothing left to be said about it, so let's just wait and see where it eventually winds up.

>Aquaman falls pretty hard once again, but its slightly stronger than usual weekdays (for a Marvel/DC film) is keeping its cumulative total decent. Expect it to finish around ¥1.7 billion ($15/16 million).

I wonder. If the Doraemon franchise is normalizing now after the peak opening last year, could a similar pattern occur for Conan? Or will that franchise really keep rising with each new entry?

Maybe. Eventually, I do expect Doraemon to drop-off at the box office simply due to Japan's rapidly aging population. Considering how iconic the character is, though, it'll be a gradual decline, but there'll be a time (maybe by 2030) where there just isn't much of a family/kids audience anymore.

Detective Conan is a different case since it has a much broader audience, one that primarily skews toward adults.

But they'll be a point where Detective Conan won't be able to increase on opening weekend, really, at least in attendance. The last three films have averaged 55% capacity, and that's closing in on just about the maximum capacity (60-70%) a film can realistically achieve. The vast majority of the remaining capacity comes from early morning (8am-10pm) and late-night (10pm and later) showings, and you can't expect these showtimes to reach sold-out status for very wide releases like Detective Conan.

If you recall, last year's film was expanded very late in its run (6 months later) to include 4DX showings, and premium showings like this will allow growth in opening weekend revenue.

Justin has some good points, but I wouldn't say producers are "completely guessing" on what domestic properties will find success in Western markets.

A good example of an easy sell to Western markets, America in particular, would be My Hero Academia. It's a shonen that draws a good bit on the superhero comic book genre of the West. Unless it was just very badly written/drawn/animated, its chances of finding success in the West was very high -- and it did so in spades. On the opposite side of the spectrum, a manga like Kingdom, despite its excellent reception and sales in Japan, is incredibly unlikely to find success in the West (it hasn't even been licensed, which is pretty rare these days, especially considering its sales figures). Between these two examples, it doesn't (and didn't) take an expert to "guess" which would be more successful in Western markets.

It all basically comes down to what Western audiences can relate to more, and whether or not they can compare it to their own properties or previous properties from Japan that found success (how many times do you hear people compare an anime to Dragon Ball Z?). You don't really need to consider the cultural differences or anything like that of a property as long as it has the similarities and familiarity on the surface.

So, how did Spiderverse do on OD? The numbers looks "meh" to me but I don't really know.

Not particularly well, missed the #1 spot. I'm estimating around ¥50 million ($450,000). Friday are much smaller than Saturday and Sunday, though, so it could recover over the weekend. We'll see. I think it's safe to say it's not going to breakout, and certainly won't be dethroning Doraemon (not even close).

Sony didn't given it a very wide release, interestingly enough. It's only playing on 211 screens. That's not an awful count, but it's 100+ less than I would have expected. This tells me that Sony is considering the film a "special" release and didn't expect anything significant at the box office. Had it not been so well-reviewed and a major award winner (including the Oscar win), it was likely planned for limited release.

I'll have a Weekend Forecast posted later today.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of Moon Exploration will effortless remain atop the weekend box office, and will post a very strong second weekend in the process. Unless Dumbo can deliver at the end of March, look for the thirty-ninth entry in the Doraemon franchise to stay at #1 until April.

>Tonde Saitama experienced a second weekend increase last week, and this week it's looking to enjoy an incredible hold for a third weekend on par with its opening weekend. This film really came out if nowhere, and could wind up with one of the best runs of 2019 by the year's end if it keeps this up.

>Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse looks to come in lower than perhaps originally thought weeks ago, but maybe expectations were in the wrong place. While it does have the Spider-Man brand name in its title, it's still a non-Disney/Pixar imported animated release and they often struggle in the market. The below average theater count also doesn't help, but that just means it's not playing in many rural areas, where it likely wouldn't play very well anyway.

>The Mule will see a decent debut, one that is surely overwhelmingly thanks to Clint Eastwood starring (and directing) in the film. Eastwood has a very dedicated audience in the market, and his films generally perform pretty well.

>Alita: Battle Angel has been unable to stabilize at all, proving to be very frontloaded, and even if it does manage to crawl over the ¥1 billion milestone (still likely), it has to be considered a bomb in the market.

>And yes, that is Bohemian Rhapsody you all see in its eighteenth weekend in the top 10, and not even at the bottom of the top 10 yet. It may achieve 20-consecutive weeks in the top 10, which would make it only the seventh film on record to accomplish that feat.

Bohemian Rhapsody looks locked to beat Phantom Menace. That would make it Fox's second highest grossing release in Japan if I'm not mistaken.

Based on Saturday it looks like you might want to swap Mule and Spiderverse around :P

Well, it's likely that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will have a noticeably higher average ticket price than The Mule, so while it appears to have ranked behind it slightly in admissions, it may have opened higher in revenue. Both should end up around ¥150 million ($1.3 million). That's expected for The Mule, but Spider-Man didn't really recover over the weekend and is a borderline disappointment. Its Sunday was also a tad weaker than Saturday, which isn't a good sign for its legs.

I'll have the Weekend Estimates up shortly. Besides Spider-Man disappointing, it was a very good weekend with a lot of excellent holds.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of Moon Exploration goes completely unchallenged for its #1 position, and based on estimates, achieved the second best second weekend decline in the franchise (since 2000, anyway), only behind Stand By Me, Doraemon. So, technically, it had the best second weekend hold in the main series of films in the franchise. Its cumulative total could be less than ¥100 million behind last year's film after two weeks, so this year's entry could certainly exceed ¥5 billion again, making it only the third film in the long-running franchise to reach the blockbuster milestone.

>Tonde Saitama has an incredible third weekend hold, and earns a third weekend that's higher than its opening weekend (it increased last weekend). This film really came out of nowhere as I said on Friday, and could very well end up with one of the best runs of 2019.

>Green Book holds very strong in third place, and will no doubt become one of the highest grossing Best Picture winners in quite some time (since The King's Speech, I believe).

>Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Mule are in a very close race to round out the Top 5, and we'll need to wait for actuals to determine which film came out on top. I believe Spider-Man will slightly edge out the fourth place debut in revenue, but I expect The Mule will beat slightly beat it in admissions.

And for those that follow the Japan box office closely, you may be wondering why the new Ultraman film isn't included in my estimates. It came in 8th place in admissions at the usual locations, so that should be enough for a Top 10 debut; however, a whopping 95% of its total theater count is apart of the usual locations (instead of the usual ~70%), meaning nearly all of its weekend admissions are already available. I'm confident that it didn't break ¥50 million because of this.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (03/09-10)
Hi Corpse,

If it's not too much additional work, could you post on a regular basis the week-end top 15 movies instead of the top 10. Maybe actuals are not available for movies below the top 10, if so estimates would still be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot.
