>Aladdin fell harder in its third weekend than in its second weekend, unsurprisingly since third weekend declines are typically bigger than second weekend drops... However, it still managed a single-digit hold based on estimates and possibly achieved a third weekend above ¥1 billion. No big deal, right? ;) If it does come in above ¥1 billion tomorrow, it'll be only the sixth film ever record to have accomplish this feat. Its cumulative total is running a bit behind Alice in Wonderland and Beauty and the Beast due to lack of holiday support, but its weekends have been par/better than theirs so far. A total above ¥10 billion ($90 million+) remains likely.

>The Fable came in higher than expected, and a debut close to ¥300 million certainly isn't too shabby for this time of year. It should be good for ¥1.5 billion+ ($15 million).

>X-Men: Dark Phoenix bombed to no one's surprise, more or less matching the debut of its predecessor. It will be very frontloaded as well, so only expect a finish around ¥600/700 million ($5/6 million) or so.

>Ride Your Wave debuted this weekend, and I forgot to include in my weekend forecast. Unfortunately, it failed to get off the ground despite a wide release from Toho.

>And lastly, once again, take all the numbers for the many limited/near-limited anime film releases as very, very rough estimates. Only Girls und Panzer behaved as its weekdays and weekend pre-sales suggested, but actuals can still be way off from estimates for all of them.

>Aladdin fell just shy of achieving a third weekend above ¥1 billion, but that's hardly a criticism given it enjoyed another single-digit drop and earned itself the seventh biggest third weekend on record! Disney's latest live-action reboot smash sold a further 691,000 admissions in its third weekend, bringing its 17-day admissions up to 3,856,800. Aladdin will continue to dominate the box-office (though Spider-Man: Far From Home will offer some competition next week) until mid-July. Expect a total north of ¥10 billion ($90 million+), perhaps finishing around ¥11/12 billion ($100-110 million).

>The Fable came in even higher with the weekend actuals, and managed a very solid debut above the ¥300 million mark. It sold 229,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 327 screens, and 296,492 admissions since opening on Friday. It'll likely finish above ¥1.5 billion ($15 million), and a total of ¥2 billion (~$20 million) could be in play as well. Toho has been on a bit of a winning streak with their mid-tier live-action films lately, which is quite the turnaround compared to the past few years.

>X-Men: Dark Phoenix bombed, selling just 95,000 admissions over the weekend on (a rather ridiculous) 705 screens, and 137,743 admissions since opening on Friday. This debut is almost 20% lower than its predecessor, making it the lowest opening weekend among all films in the X-Men franchise in the market. Expect a finish barely above ¥500 million ($4/5 million).

>Godzilla: King of the Monsters continues to display heavy frontloading despite good reviews/audience scores. It's basically performing as it was expected to prior to its very impressive debut, so it's doing "fine", but it should have been able to easily clear the ¥3 billion milestone following its debut and reception... not have to crawl to the mark and possibly even miss it.

>Ride Your Wave came in a bit higher than estimates, but its debut is still pretty disappointing given Toho's apparent confidence in it based on its impressive screen/showtime counts. It only sold 62,719 admissions over the weekend across 299 screens.

>I feel utterly defeated in attempting to predict Uta no Prince-sama The Movie: Maji LOVE Kingdom. I was off a ludicrous 60% last weekend, its debut weekend, and I was off nearly 30% in its second weekend... My only explanation is that it has wide-spanning fan events/giveaways which are greatly affecting its admissions and ticket prices.

>Avengers: Endgame experienced an incredible hold in its ninth-weekend of release. It's been displaying strong late legs, perhaps due to a repeat viewing rush factor by fans before it leaves theaters.

With Aladdin breaking out, it looks like this year is set for at least three ¥10+ billion films. Too bad Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire finished a little short, or 2019 could have made a play for the record or at minimum tied 2003 for most ¥10+ billion films.

Spider-Man: Far From Home debuts over the last weekend of June, and while I think it'll fall a bit shy of dethroning Aladdin, it's looking to be an actual contender for the #1 spot based on its Friday performance and Saturday pre-sales. In fact, its pre-sales are the second highest among all Marvel/DC films that I've tracked, trailing only Avengers: Endgame (by about 33%) and ahead of Avengers: Infinity War (by about 8%).

So, Far From Home seems guaranteed to open above ¥500 million, and even ¥600 million+ appears quite doable so long as it doesn't see a big Sunday decline. If it opens above ¥580.9 million, it'll out-open The Amazing Spider-Man to become the biggest opener in the overall Spider-Man series since Spider-Man 3 (and its predecessors). A 25-45% increase over Spider-Man: Homecoming is expected right now -- very, very impressive if all goes well.

You can check out the post above, Marvel/DC's Box-Office History, to see where the projected ¥650 million debut would rank it among all other Marvel/DC films.

Hi Corpse!

I'm more interested in how the Anpanman movies typically perform. How do they compare to other long-running series at the box office?

I'm still surprised at the low numbers for the latest Yuasa film.

As you know, Anpanman is a very well known and one of Japan's most recognizable characters, and has been running for quite some time (1973-). The first film was released in 1989, and each year since has seen a theatrical release. The film that opened this weekend is the 30th entry in the film franchise. The film franchise, however, is much less successful than other long-running, annual film franchises such as Doraemon, Pokemon, Detective Conan, or Crayon Shin-chan.

The films are distributed by Tokyo Theaters, Co., an independent studio that, as their name may suggest, release their films primarily in and around the Tokyo area. That means they usually play on around 200 screens, enough to qualify as a wide release, but that number has been steadily growing as the market has been opening more theaters at a pretty fast pace in recent years.

And unsurprisingly, the films skew very young (elementary-aged children and younger) and their last showtimes are typically around 5PM at most locations, with very few playing them after 6/7PM. At the box-office, they do decent business given their release (while they get a fair number of theaters, they're often on small screens and have few showtimes). Most of the films debut between ¥75-100 million, and I believe a couple have managed to exceed that range just slightly. None of the films to my knowledge have ever reached the ¥1 billion milestone in total, and they usually finish around ¥500 million or so.

The films also nearly always open on the last weekend of June or the first weekend of July. Feel free to go back to pages in this thread during this time frame to see how the films from this decade have performed.

Same here. Toho gave Ride Your Wave the widest release for a Yuasa film by far, and it definitely has underperformed. Granted, it wasn't expected to do huge numbers or anything, but given the acclaim of some of his past work (namely 2017's The Night is Short, Walk on Girl), it looked like Ride Your Wave was perhaps set to be his first breakout at the box-office. But I guess not. Audiences scores are average (3/5 on most movie sites), so I'd wager that's why it didn't do better.

When a bigger films opens, I like to track its tickets sales throughout the day and compare them to other notable debuts from the past several years. I didn't think Spider-Man: Far From Home would be quite big enough to be worth doing this for, but it just made the cut on what I like to keep track of.

It's still going to debut in second place behind Aladdin (in its 4th weekend), but it may achieve the third biggest debut in the MCU, behind Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and about on par with Avengers: Infinity War. And it'll have a a very impressive ~50% increase over Spider-Man: Homecoming.

I'm going to go back and gather its hourly ticket sales and have that post up here soon.

>Aladdin holds onto the top spot despite a strong showing from Spider-Man, managing another incredible hold. When a 12% drop is your biggest decline to date, you're doing something very, very right. It sold a further 611,000 admissions over the weekend, bringing its four-week total above 5 million already to 5,048,500!

And due to another incredible hold, Aladdin achieved the sixth-biggest fourth weekend on record, and while its cumulative total continues to trail Beauty and the Beast and Alice in Wonderland due to no holiday support, its fourth weekend is significantly higher than both films, by a whopping 53% and 68%, respectively. Since Beauty and Alice no longer had holiday support after their fourth weeks, I imagine Aladdin will catch them in total very, very soon. A total north of ¥10 billion ($90 million+) is guaranteed now, and I expect it'll finish around ¥12/13 billion ($110-120 million).

>Spider-Man: Far From Home had to settle for second place, but don't let the silver medal fool you -- it had an excellent debut. The second Spider-Man film in the MCU sold 460,340 admissions over the weekend frame across 824 screens, and sold 669,304 since opening on Friday.

Spider-Man's debut came in an incredible 56% above its predecessor, and even 4% above Avengers: Infinity War, to deliver the third biggest opening weekend in the MCU behind only Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Spider-Man has always been the most popular superhero in Japan, and Far From Home's opening further proves this fact. Expect a total around ¥4 billion ($35 million+), which would make it the fifth-highest grossing superhero film of all-time, behind the original Spider-Man trilogy and Endgame.

>The latest Anpanman release, the 31st entry in the long-running franchise, set a new franchise opening weekend record (and opening day franchise record according to the studio), selling 104,526 admissions over the weekend frame across 233 screens. Of course, this is a very notable accomplishment for such a long-running franchise, though the wider release due to theater growth expansion in recent years definitely helped it a good deal. It's expected to set a new franchise record in total as well, which currently stands at ¥650 million.

>Godzilla: King of the Monsters finally managed a respectable hold after weeks heavy frontloading to remain in the Top 5. Reaching the ¥3 billion milestone remains very difficult, but if it can continue to post similar, preferably better, holds and Toho keeps it around come August, then it just might barely reach the mark.

>Men in Black International wasn't so lucky and continues to drop ridiculously fast. It's barely going to finish above the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone, finishing an embarrassing 65-70% below its predecessor...

>X-Men: Dark Phoenix... well, that's one of the biggest drops in rankings I've ever seen (EIGHT), as well as one of the biggest percentage declines... It was already going to become the lowest-grossing film in the overall X-Men franchise, but this is something else! A 64% drop in Japan is basically the equivalent of a 80%+ drop in the U.S.. The only films that see these types of declines are very, very niche otaku anime releases that generally have giveaways to opening week/weekend attendees.
