Wow. Japan has fully embraced these live-action remakes of the Disney Renaissance films. I guess the animated versions made strong impressions back in the 1990s? And do you have any idea about how Godzilla will finish in the market or info on Gamera?

Well... Walt Disney Animation was never very big in Japan until Frozen. Before then, no Disney Animated film (excluding Pixar) ever achieved blockbuster status (which Frozen did, literally, 5x over...).

Beauty and the Beast grossed ¥2.5 billion ($20.0 million) and was the 9th-highest grossing film of 1992. It does not rank inside the Top 100 highest grossing animated films in Japan.
Aladdin grossed ¥4.25 billion ($37.2 million) and was the 3rd-highest grossing film of 1993. It is currently the 56th-highest grossing animated film in Japan.
The Lion King grossed ¥3.2 billion ($31.7 million) and was the 5th-highest grossing film of 1994. It is currently the 90th-highest grossing animated film in Japan.

Every other Disney Animated film of the 90s disappointed or bombed. And only Tarzan, grossing ¥2.8 billion ($25.9 million) in 2000, and Lilo & Stitch, grossing ¥2.91 billion ($24.2 million) in 2003, found success in the 2000s.

So... the early 90s Renaissance films did very well, Aladdin in particular, but it's not like they were massive or anything. They could have certainly gained more popularity over the years on home video/TV, but I've never seen them on any home video sales chart or TV ratings chart, so I don't think there's a direct correlation linking the box-office success of the live-action remakes to their animated counterparts. It may have more to do with all the exposure they've received from their musicals, theme parks, merchandise, etc. etc.

And finally, it's very important to note that, so far, they're all appealing more toward adults than families/children. They've all shared high average ticket prices, and the weak morning ticket sales versus strong evening/night ticket sales, both key factors in determining a film's demographic.

BOM's numbers for Gamera are right for what they have. I don't have any actual total for it since it finished below ¥1 billion, but BOM has it finishing just below ¥300 million before they stopped tracking it. But using some average weekly holds from that point on, it should have finished closer to ¥400 million ($3.5/3.6 million).

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Walt Disney Box Office History
Aladdin's opening weekend actual was released, and it grossed ¥1,122,000,000 ($10.3 million) on 766,000 admissions over the weekend frame. After 3-days in release, it grossed ¥1,396,000,000 ($12.9 million) on 960,000 admissions (the 3-day total will be exact later this evening).

Below is what I believe is the complete list of Opening Weekends & Totals for Walt Disney releases since 1998 (data is scarce before then), but I could have missed a couple films. I've done separate lists for the various Disney franchises, but never a full one for Walt Disney as a whole, so let me know if I overlooked something. Just note that while many of the films represent both lists, there are some entries that just made one of them, so if that's the case I didn't make a mistake.

>Aladdin dominated the box-office in its debut weekend, earning the biggest opening weekend for the month of June in 15 years to become the 43rd film to open above the ¥1 billion milestone in the market. Disney's latest live-action remake sold a remarkable 766,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 842 screens. And after three days in release, it reached 960,000 admissions. This debut is 5% higher than 2017's Beauty and the Beast and 15 lower than 2010's Alice in Wonderland.

While the box-office won't be dead until mid-July, Aladdin will mostly have the next several weeks to itself, so look for some potentially strong numbers for the first month or so of its release. As for where it may finish, it's too early give a reliable projection. This is the first Disney live-action remake to open outside of any major holiday frames, so theoretically it shouldn't display the legs of its studio predecessors, but having little competition for a month will go a long way. Not to mention that audience scores are very good, so it'll likely benefit from good WOM as well. I do, however, expect a total around ¥9 billion ($80 million), but I also wouldn't be surprised if it makes a play at the ¥10 billion ($90 million) milestone.

>Godzilla: King of the Monsters saw a sharp second weekend decline after its great opening last week, but its hold isn't unexpected since last Saturday was a national discount day, which inflated its opening a bit. Under normal circumstances, it likely would have dropped between 35-40%. Still, the drop is a little high and the good audience reception may not help it afterall. I still have it exceeding the ¥3 billion milestone and outgrossing its predecessor, and expect it'll finish around ¥3.5 billion ($30 million).

>The Confidence Man JP experiences its worst weekend hold yet, though that hold is still below a 30%. It's already earned what it was expected to after just four weeks, and is on track to reach the ¥3 billion ($25 million+) milestone. This is an impressive result for a film that opened right after the Golden Week holiday period.

>Kingdom has done it -- it has become the highest grossing live-action film based on a Weekly Shonen manga series, surpassing 2014's[ Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno. It exceeded 4 million admissions in its eigheth-weekend of release, and also exceeded a multiplier of 10. The film was expected to perform well, but it well out-performed those expecations.

>Pokemon: Detective Pikachu has begun to experience heavier drops now, weekdays and weekends alike, and while I do believe it'll reach the ¥3 billion milestone, it's going to just barely get there. This is still a good performance for the film, but in the end, it closely mirrored the recent animated films in its debut and its end result.

>Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire and Avengers: Endgame fell outside the Top 10 this weekend, in their ninth and seventh weekends, respectively, though both films still posted decent holds despite noticeable screen/showtime cuts. The former has locked up the ¥9 billion milestone as a result, and will be the film that Aladdin will be vying to beat for the year (so far, still lots of the year remains); and the latter locked up the ¥6 billion milestone thanks to its hold.

Well... Walt Disney Animation was never very big in Japan until Frozen. Before then, no Disney Animated film (excluding Pixar) ever achieved blockbuster status (which Frozen did, literally, 5x over...).

And finally, it's very important to note that, so far, they're all appealing more toward adults than families/children. They've all shared high average ticket prices, and the weak morning ticket sales versus strong evening/night ticket sales, both key factors in determining a film's demographic.

That's even more impressive. Disney seems to have universal appeal and on the verge of dominating every market.

I did a little more digging. Looks like your estimate is pretty much on the money. Japanese Wikipedia says ¥410 million and lists the Heisei Gamera Perfection Book as the source. According to that same book: Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995) grossed ¥520 million, Gamera 2: Advent of Legion (1996) grossed ¥700 million, and Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1993) grossed ¥600 million. Do you have any idea or maybe know where to find what the budget might have been for Gamera: The Brave (2006), how these films were critically received (the '90s films got rave reviews I believe), and why Gamera has struggled so much at Japanese box office as opposed to Godzilla or Ultraman? Information in the West is limited.

I can't find any budget figure for Gamera: The Brave, but it was likely no more than ¥500 million. It's unlikely to have made a profit at the box-office, and likely struggled to break-even in the end.

Not too many domestic releases exceed a ¥500 million (~$5 million) budget, and far fewer exceed a budget of ¥1 billion (~$10 million). It was also a Shochiku release, so a budget close to ¥500 million than ¥1 billion is even more likely. Shochiku is Japan's second biggest distributor, but they're still incredibly far behind Toho in terms of film budgets and box-office returns.

The thing with Gamera is that I've always considered the character to be more "iconic" than "popular", and just a lesser known rival to Godzilla. As you know, the later Godzilla films didn't do very well at the box-office, especially compared to the earlier films, so the Gamera films doing half or less of the Godzilla films from the 90's seems reasonable/expected to me.

An interesting weekend, one that's rather difficult to predict since five of the top ten films (three of which are debuting) are limited or near-limited release anime films. These types of films can be very tricky to track and predict and often have extreme average ticket price fluctuations depending on if they have special fan events or giveaways. What isn't difficult to predict this weekend, however, is what film will claim the #1 spot...

>Aladdin will effortlessly stay atop the box-office, as it should until July 12th, and like the majority of non-fanbase films with major debuts (~¥1 billion or more), it'll likely achieve an incredible second weekend hold. It's rare to see second weekend drops above 20/25%, and everything is suggesting a potential sub-10% hold for Aladdin. There are also some instances (Beauty and the Beast is actually one of them) of major openers increasing over their second weekend, so I wouldn't totally rule that out for Aladdin yet either, though it's unlikely.

>Men in Black International will debut in second place, but it's going to do so rather unimpressively. If it debuts near the forecast, it'll experience a 50%+ drop from Men in Black III... And I don't have it going much higher than the forecast, so this film is going to be a real blemish on the successful track record of this franchise. It likely won't gross more than ¥1.5 billion (sub-$15 million).

Aladdin was down ~6% Sat.-to-Sat., so a sub-10% second weekend hold and a ¥1 billion gross is pretty likely.

>Aladdin takes the #1 spot in spectacular fashion once again, achieving the sub-10% drop it needed to achieve a second weekend above ¥1 billion -- it's the fourteenth film in history to accomplish this feat. And not to dismiss this incredible hold, it's just important to remember that "original" films that debut big typically have excellent second weekends, so this hold wasn't unexpected. So far, Aladdin is performing very similarly to its studio predecessors, Beauty and the Beast and Alice in Wonderland, and has a good shot at reaching the ¥10 billion ($90 million) milestone.

>Men in Black International debuts in second place to a disappointing result. It's down around 50% compared to its predecessors' opening weekend, and will likely end up experiencing close to a 60% decline in total since it'll shed screens/showtime rather quick.

>Girls und Panzer: Finale - Chapter 2 did well, besting the other two limited/near-limited release anime films that debuted this weekend. I have it coming in about 8% below Chapter 1 of the finale, but it could have matched it when actuals come in. Usually, part 1/chapter 1 of multi part/chapter finale films perform the best, so this is an impressive result.

>Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl performed incredibly well in its debut, selling out ~85% of its available tickets over the weekend. It's common for limited release anime films like this to sellout the majority of their showtimes, but 85% is very notable. It averaged ~191 moviegoers per showing on an average auditorium of 219 seats..

>Aladdin claimed the #1 spot in spectacular fashion once again, selling a further 757,217 admissions, achieving an incredible second weekend hold to become only the fourteenth film to achieve a second weekend above the ¥1 billion milestone. It earned itself the 9th-Biggest Second Weekend of All-Time. So far, Aladdin is performing very similarly to its studio predecessors, Beauty and the Beast and Alice in Wonderland, and has a good shot at reaching the ¥10 billion ($90 million) milestone.

>Men in Black International debuts in second place to a disappointing result. The fourth film in the popular(?) franchise sold 188,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 732 screens. It sold 256,633 admissions since opening on Friday. This debut is 52% below Men in Black III, and since I expect legs to be worse, it could potentially finish 60% below its predecessor. Expect a disappointing finish around ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million).

>Girls und Panzer: Finale - Chapter 2 did very well, selling an impressive 118,587 admissions over the weekend on just 60 screens. This opening is actually 3% above Chapter 1, which is pretty rare for sequels in multi-part finale series'. It's very hard to project totals for nigh-exclusive fanbase, or otaku, anime films since they can have fan events/giveaways throughout their run which provide big boosts, and while ¥1 billion (~$10 million) won't be easy to reach, it certainly could do it.

>Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl might just be the most impressive performance at the box-office this weekend. The limited release anime film managed to break the ¥100 million mark over the weekend on just 31 screens. And while that's an incredible feat, it sold through an astonishing 87% of its available tickets over the weekend, selling 66,630. As I mentioned yesterday, it's not uncommon for limited release anime films to sell the majority of their available tickets, but an 87% is incredible.

On a different note, Spirited Away has just been theatrically released in China and reception is excellent so far. So Miyazaki's masterpiece could retake the WW anime crown it seems.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_h ... nime_films

1 Your Name $358,924,129 2016
2 Spirited Away $331,368,351 2001
3 Howl's Moving Castle $235,184,110 2004

Keep me/us updated on how it performs in China. I read that it was finally getting a theatrical release in China, as more and more Japanese (animated) films continue to be, so great news all around.

Since Spirited away is getting released in China i tried to look into what are it's worldwide box office numbers.. And I found 3 numbers.. 331 million $ (Wikipedia and some other cites), 289 million $ (a lot of articles, variety, ghibli page) and 277 million $ (Boxofficemojo)

So here is the problem, Boxofficemojo has SA at 277 mil with a 229 mil in Japan.. But almost everywhere i search (and in Japanese box office websites) the domestic Japanese box office is at 30.8 billion Yen

30.8 billion yen is ~283 mil dollars with today's exchange rates . If you consider Boxofficemojo getting the non Japan numbers right (49 million) then Spirited away sits at 283 + 49 = 332 million? Which explains the Wikipedia number

But of course it was 2001, so looking through dollar-yen values in 2001 through the months of SA's run the exchange rate never went anywhere close to where it needed to be to make 30.8 billion yen worth 229 million dollars like Boxofficemojo has it..

In fact 30.8 billion yen were around 240-255 million dollars in 2001-2002 taking the average and top exchange rates for the 13 weeks SA stayed in the cinemas and at the end of its run.. so even then it's ~240-255+49=~289-304 million. This kinda lines up with the 290 million $ I found in many articles

Whats the right number? How much did Spirited away make in Japan in dollars?

(Also Boxofficemojo also has Your Name making more money in Japan than Spirit Away which is contradictory with almost every Japanese and English list I saw in either currency or with even the highest 2001 exchange rates)

Pretty certain it made 249M dollars. I remember it because Frozen managed to narrowly beat it (by like half a million) thanks to a more favorable exchange rate.
Just wait for Corpse, though, if you want to be 100% sure :P

Whenever something is wrong with BOM's numbers, ER seem to almost always be the cause. I recall Corpse's charts have Spirited Away $ value at $249m, so within your range.

Like Omni said, we should probably wait for Corpse's clarification.

I need to type-up an answer for general questions regarding BOM numbers so that I can just paste it in the future. It might be the most commonly asked question, or the longest to explain... Get ready for a wall of text.

Basically, don't rely much on BOM's numbers, especially when using them as a reference for films that were in release (i.e. still in/near the top 10) for several months. The exchange rate often fluctuates too much over a monthly (sometimes daily/weekly) basis for sites like BOM to have accurate USD figures.

Just take Aladdin as a current example. The exchange rate has become noticeably more favorable since Monday, and the film would be at a $33.5 million total if someone converted its two-week cumulative JPY total today (Friday) for a "gain" of $0.5 million. Its two-week total isn't suddenly $33.5 million though... it's still $33.0 million.

In order to get an accurate figure, you need to track a film's JPY gross week-to-week and convert its weekly earnings using that week's average exchange rate rather than converting its cumulative total using the most recent exchange rate. A film can suddenly gain or lose money this way, sometimes millions. BOM calculates their international numbers by converting the current total with the current exchange rate (at least in Japan, I don't track the other markets). This is how BOM messes up, or rather, why their total numbers aren't particularly accurate. And since the exchange rate has become a bit more favorable this week, I will guarantee that BOM's three-week total in USD for Aladdin will be higher than mine come Monday.

There are some extreme cases of this happening at BOM. My favorite example if with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Just click HERE and look at its total from weeks 15-18. Its 18th week total is LOWER than its 15th week total. There are many other problems with its BOM numbers, but that's the most obvious one and easiest for people to see and easily understand.

I went back and tracked Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, along with other films that enjoyed very long runs, comparing all of its weekly grosses to the average exchange rate of the same week and ended up with a final total of $160.7 million. That may not be a 100% accurate figure, but it's certainly very close and definitely more accurate than BOM's $152.9 million. Also, films in Japan tend to play for a long time, well after they fall outside the rankings. BOM usually stops updating films once they're out of the top 10, so BOM is regularly lower on most films as a result.

And finally, to answer your question about Spirited Away, it, too, was a film I went back and recalculated and got $249.0 million for. You can also check out BOM's Spirited Away weekly numbers to see extreme errors. They have it only adding $2.3 million to its total after the eight weeks they have despite also having it adding $4.5 million over the weekends alone(!). Its total also decreased for two-consecutive weeks, too...

I never mean to bash or criticize BOM too much. It's not reasonable to expect them to track the exchange rates in every market on a daily/weekly basis and make their conversions accordingly. If anything, it's a good thing that they have a record of any kind on international numbers and continue to post them to this day.

>Aladdin will, once again, effortlessly stay atop the box-office. Expect this kind of dominance until mid-July. Its pre-sales for the weekend suggests it could see another sub-10% weekend hold, but third weekend holds are generally worse than second weekends for soon-to-be-uber-blockbusters like this, so I'm going a little higher. We'll see though, it could pull off another single-digit hold. ¥10 billion ($90 million+) is probably locked up now, I believe.

>The Fable will have the standard so-so debut for this time of year. Nothing exciting, just a decent enough opening and likely finish.

>X-Men: Dark Phoenix will bomb/disappoint like the other three films with the younger cast. X-Men: Days of Future Past was the only one among them to gross over ¥1 billion ($10 million) and come somewhat close to reaching the "success" of the original three films. That said, I actually have Dark Phoenix opening on par, maybe even slightly higher than X-Men: Apocalypse, so I guess there's that accomplishment if it does happen considering its performance elsewhere.

>And lastly, be weary of the forecast for the many limited/near-limited released anime films occupying the Top 10 right now. As I've said, they're very hard to predict (I need to edit Uta no Prince-sama's opening from last week still) for many, many reasons and can sometimes plummet or increase over any given weekend. It looks like all of them will see sharp declines this weekend, aside from Promare (which looks to increase), but you never know. My predictions are simply based on weekday performance and weekend pre-sales.
