Post Re: Japan Box Office (And More): Video Game Sales (05.11-17)
Japan is lifting its emergency measures (which never did include restrictions of any kind) in Tokyo and four other prefectures tomorrow (Monday), the last of the prefectures that were still under emergency orders. Only 2 cases of the virus were reported in Tokyo on Saturday, as reported cases have nose-dived since mid-April (when the state of emergency became nationwide). Barely 100 cases have been reported nationwide over the past 3-days.

Japan's total reported cases of COVID-19 stands at only 16,536 with 808 deaths as of Saturday. Incredibly impressive numbers. Granted, testing has remained low.

More theaters are also re-opening, including additional Toho and Aeon locations (the two chains account for about two-thirds of all theaters), so I do expect the box-office to resume tracking/reporting in the coming weeks.

03 (03) Parasite (Bitter's End) Week 20

10 (---) Yukio Mishima vs. Tokyo University (Gaga) Week 10

*Re-release

Note: Still no numbers being reported, but with emergency measures being lifted, I expect they'll begin to be in the coming weeks as more theaters reopen.

I'll have more information in a few days on Japan's phased reopening plan, which includes how theaters are suppose to follow, but essentially indoor events (which includes theaters) are to follow capacity limits in each phase, with capacity limits increasing with each new phase. The current phasing road map goes into September.

Re-release.

Note: The re-releases of Your Name. and Shin Godzilla ranked 7th and 8th in admissions, respectively, over the May 23rd-24th weekend, but they either missed the Top 10 in revenue or didn't have numbers reported.

SURPRISE! The numbers are certainly small and not particularly exciting on their own, but the box-office is having its figures reported again and last weekend saw major increases (albeit still small numbers). This all came a few weeks earlier than I was anticipating.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (& More): WKND Actuals (First In 2 Mont
Box-office reporting is back, though it'll be slow and boring for some time. A lot of June/July releases have been delayed over the past month, including part one (and two) of the finale to the Rurouni Kenshin live-action series (both moved to 2021). It was pretty much the last big film still scheduled for July, so while the month still has a couple notable films still on the schedule, nothing of significance remains on the calendar.

That said, August is looking alright, at least in terms of bigger films. Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur which was originally scheduled back in March is opening on August 7th, just ahead of the Obon Festival holiday frame. Onward, also originally scheduled back in March, is now opening on August 21st. It's missing out on Obon Festival, but it's still a solid enough date. And some smaller Spring releases that were postponed have been rescheduled for August, too.

There is still a big list of blockbusters that need rescheduled, and I do expect some of them to be rescheduled in August and September in the coming weeks.

Slow software sales week, but nothing of big interest was released. Animal Crossing: New Horizons still doing over 100,000 in its tenth-week is crazy, and it might exceed 5 million copies (physical only) be mfore July.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition will be released this week and should enjoy a solid debut to liven the software sales up a bit, possibly breaking 100,000 and taking first place. This will be the second port of the game, which was originally released on the Wii, so 100,000 first week (or even close to that) would be pretty impressive. The first port was on the 3DS. Of course, the Switch version is more of a enhanced port with much better graphics and more features added.

On the hardware front, the Switch sales saw an uptick while the PlayStation systems saw dramatic declines. Perhaps Sony's announcement of the PS5 showcase on June 4th is the reason, because this level of decline isn't just a production/stocking issue. I know that the PS4's lifecyle will be coming to an end, presumably at the end of the year as it closes in on 7-years since launch, but it's a bit of a shame it's likely to fall a bit shy of 10 million units sold in the country. 9 million+ (probably on track for ~9.5 million) is good, but it is below the PS3 in the market.

Note: Sales figures include variations (e.g. Pro, SP, lite, slim, XL, etc.).

No movements for the current gen consoles (or those still in production/selling, looking at you 2DS XL), but with the PS5 looming, the PS4's run could more or less end come the end of 2020. I imagine Sony will keep it around for most of 2021, but once the PS5 launches (I'm guessing in November?), sales will become minuscule, perhaps selling just a few hundred units a week. Does it have enough left in the tank to reach 10 million units? I'm going to say no, but it'll possibly come very close and it'll be interesting to track.

Best Selling Manga by Series of 2020 (Top 10): [11.18-05.24]

01. 47,019,457 (New All-Time Yearly Record) - Demon Slayer (Shueisha/Koyoharu Gotouge)

09. 2,201,003 - Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun (Square Enix/Iro Aida)
10. 1,964,432 - Spy x Family (Shueisha/Tatsuya Endo)

A few notes about these lists:

Spoiler: show
01. Any title that's highlighted is currently in the Weekly Top 50, whether remaining there since being released or resurfacing on the most recent weekly sales chart.
02. Any title that's not highlighted has fallen outside the Weekly Top 50, and the sales figure is the total that it last appeared on the weekly sales chart.
03. And while most titles won't reappear back in the Weekly Top 50 after falling off, there are two common factors that can often cause sales to increase again: a. If the title(s) has an ongoing anime and it's entered an important/popular arc, this can sometimes drive the sales of the manga. b. If the manga series itself has entered an important/popular arc, then past volumes can often see an increase in sales.
04. Consider the Best Selling Manga by Series list to be rough, but pretty accurate estimates. The top six series are practically 100% accurate, but the bottom four are less so. A manga series typically has a new volume released every 3 months on average, so the month before a new volume is released tends to be quite low and some series can sometimes falls outside of tracking range for a few weeks and require a bit of estimating until data is released.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (& More): Manga Sales (05.18-24)
A number of previously postponed films got rescheduled in recent days. I'll begin a list of the bigger/notable releases and update regularly:

Rescheduled Films:

Little Women is opening on June 12th; originally scheduled for March.
Dolittle is opening on June 19th; originally scheduled for March.
Rambo: Last Blood is opening on June 26th; originally scheduled for July (moved forward?).
Sonic the Hedgehog is opening June 26th; originally scheduled for March.
Grand Blue is opening on August 07th; originally scheduled for April.
Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur is opening on August 07th; originally scheduled for March.
Onward is opening on August 21st; originally scheduled for March.
Scoob! is opening "late Summer." I don't think it had an original date.

There are still dozens of films that were postponed that were originally scheduled between March-June (and a few in July, but those have largely been moved to 2021), so I'll continue to provide updates on when they get rescheduled. I expect a large number of them will happen over the next couple of weeks.

Re-release.

We're going to continue to see most of these same films for a few more weeks until more films begin to be released (see above regarding postponed films being rescheduled). But the box-office is growing, and more theaters are opening, so things may appear somewhat "normal" in about a month. "Normal" meaning regular openers each weekend and higher earnings, but I don't expect the grosses/admissions to be near normal levels until August at the earliest.

And honestly, The Real Exorcist is already performing decently well. It's definitely being helped by being the first notable release in two-months, but it's still a small film from an independent studio. And, obviously, it's not playing quite as wide as it would be and has to operate under capacity limits. I wouldn't have expected a lot more out of it if released under regular conditions.

Corpse, will you lower this year''s top grossing film list to a half a billion benchmark instead of the usual 1b?

I can do that. But keep in mind that actual figures for films earning below ¥1 billion will mostly have estimated final totals. Eiren keeps track of any film that earns above that milestone, but any film that finishes below it only have their final total revealed if the distributor/studio would release it.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition enjoyed a healthy first week, on par with Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and it's particularly impressive because while this is an enhanced port, it's still the second port of the original Wii game. However, it still wasn't enough to knock Animal Crossing: New Horizons out of the top spot, which remained above 100,000 in its eleventh(!) week.

On the hardware front, the Switch consoles saw huge increases (accounting for 94% of the week's overall console sales), doubling their sales versus last week. The PlayStation 4 (not Pro) also saw a big increases compared to last week, perhaps due to Sony delaying their PlayStation 5 announcement presentation. Still, the PlayStation 4 console sales are down considerably in recent weeks due to the buzz surrounding the PS5 news.
