Especially combined with another possible win at the Japanese Academy Awards.

Just to confirm, is the home video release for Bohemian Rhapsody still scheduled for March 14?

Nope. The home video release was pushed back to an undetermined date.

Very smart of Fox considering the recent wins. I'm guessing it should still have some late legs into Spring if it doesn't lose too many screens in March.

If I understand your question, you can simply search theater locations and see which movies are showing. And next to the title of the movie, it'll list what version it is (Sub, Dub, 3D, IMAX, etc.).

For example, HERE is the link to Toho Cinemas Shinjuku. When you scroll down to what's playing, you can see that Alita: Battle Angel, for example, has a screening being shown in English subtitled in IMAX. Basically anything that says "English" is an English subtitled showing.

If you're wanting to find a Japanese movie being shown with English subtitles, that's nearly impossible.

Why would the English-language movies have English subtitles? Surely it makes sense for them to have Japanese subtitles.

I believe by "English subtitled", Corpse was referring to English language with subtitles (inferring Japanese subtitles). Otherwise, as you say, it doesn't really make sense :P

Actually English language audio with English subtitles make sense to me as non-native English speaker, my listening skills sucks.
Though I ask for Japanese language audio with English subtitles cause in Bangkok every Thai movies have English subtitles and foreign language movies (French, Japanese, Chinese, etc.) display both Thai and English subtitles, very tourist friendly.

Yeah in China every film (Chinese or not) has Chinese subtitles (which is weird to me - but even TV here has Chinese subtitles, I guess they have very noisy environments!). One-in-a-million Chinese films have English subtitles. Don't think I've seen any English-language movie with English subtitles.

With the new Doraemon debuting with almost 500k seats from the usual locations, just how high can it open?

Last year it opened Saturday and gained 370548 out of 832742 seats, given Friday is at 487002, this seems like it'll have over 900k seats and the potential to improve on last year.

I guess this means that the Spring Box Office season is about to start with a bang!

It's called closed captioning, mostly for the hearing impaired and also for others who do not speak Mandarin, I might add.

It's amazing how Doraemon and Conan not only maintain the same audience and avoid franchise fatigue but actually keep growing with each installment (at least in recent years).

It's not closed captioning. It's on everything, all the time. It's not possible to be turned off. It's on streamed programmes, terrestrial programmes, the news, etc. etc. Everything. And if you do not speak Mandarin, I don't see how useful it will be to have Chinese text come up on the screen. People speak before they can read. I am sure it is because in China there is no culture of being quiet when people are watching stuff. So they have these subtitles for people instead of encouraging a culture of just shutting the fuck up. The easy route as opposed to the right route (which always happens in China). It would seem too generous a move to one small segment of society and too annoying for the majority of society if it was implemented purely for people that can't hear so good.

Written Chinese can be understood by both Cantonese and Mandarin speakers. But spoken Cantonese and Mandarin are not mutually intelligible. So if you are a Cantonese speaker/reader who does not understand Mandarin, you can still understand its written form.

The subtitles are hardcoded because not every TV or streaming player has closed captioning option?

That would only make sense in South China. But all over China there are Chinese subtitles. Nobody in North China speaks Cantonese, yet every damn show has subtitles.

And yes, perhaps they use open captioned subtitles because of what you said.

Let me rephrase: English-language films always receive Japanese-subtitle showings, and sometimes receive Japanese-dub showings.

Most high-profile imported releases receive a Japanese dub cast, and the later the release, the more likely this is to occur. Japanese audiences prefer watching English-language films (or foreign-language films in general) dubbed rather than subtitled. This is typically another reason why delayed imported releases in Japan largely perform better than day-and-date releases.

More seating doesn't always equal a higher opening. This is the first Doraemon film to open on a Friday, and this Friday happens to be the 1st (national discount day), so I wouldn't be surprised if its opening weekend comes in below last year's film. That said, Doraemon skews very, very young, so the vast majority of its target audience will have to wait until the weekend to watch it anyway.

Regardless of whether or not it opens higher than last year's film, which did score the biggest opening weekend in the franchise, it'll obviously have a big opening and kick the Spring box office season off with a bang, as the franchise does every year. All but a couple films in the franchise have opened the first weekend of March.

>Bohemian Rhapsody debuted atop the box office, delivering quite the impressive start, selling 245,258 admissions over the weekend frame across 469 screens; and 338,299 admissions since Friday. It became Fox's second biggest debut of the year, opening just 9% below The Greatest Showman. I don't believe the Queen biopic will come anywhere near the legs of The Greatest Showman, but it'll likely develop strong legs given the genre, so I'd expect a total between ¥2.5-3 billion ($25-30 million) for now.

Corpse, have you ever thought about making an adjusted for inflation all-time chart? I know once before you said there hasn't been much ticket-price inflation, but there must be a difference between, say, 1960 and now.

Eiren releases the national average ticket price here: http://www.eiren.org/statistics_e/index.html

As you can see, the last 25 years has roughly been in the same ballpark, but in 1960, tickets were almost 20x less than they are now. So I'm not sure that an adjusted for inflation chart would even make sense!

Although it would certainly be interesting to see.

Indeed! Who would have thought it would go on to best Frozen and achieve the highest recorded multiplier ever? Moments like that are what makes predicting the box office more entertaining. :P

I could. The list may be a bit limited, however, becase as you mentioned, and feasby007 expanded on, there's been little inflation since the early 1990s; and any gross for a film released after 1993 would barely change.

The 1950s-1970s (mostly just the 50s and 60s though) is where adjusting for inflation makes the most sense.

I can put together a chart in a week or so.

If that's the case, I hardly see the point. As, at least for me, adjusted differences outside of a 10 year range are kind of useless in comparing.
