The situation is different in China. Everyone is a dumb-ass and nobody takes two seconds to actually question things or look things up - nobody has any patience. Those two seconds could be put to better use playing Candy Crush or some other crap Tencent game. So plastering Cameron's name everywhere should work well for it here.

Bohemian Rhapsody will enjoy its fifteenth-consecutive week in the Top 10 this weekend. I'm expecting it to achieve either 17 or 18 weeks in the Top 10.

Not surprising. To my knowledge, they've sold out all all of their Love Yourself World Tour dates since it began last August. I think their tour was the second biggest in the world in 2018.

They had two shows over the weekend in Japan, and Sunday's show was broadcast live in theaters. Live broadcasts aren't included in the box office rankings, though.

As mentioned in the weekend forecast, this weekend was a slow one before the upcoming Spring box office season begins. A few films did drop a bit harder than expected, but overall, no notable performances really.

>Aquaman repeats atop the box office, however, while this is its second victory in revenue, it actually comes in second place once again in admissions (selling 126,000). Its second weekend drop is basically the standard for the genre, and it's on track for a total a little above ¥1.5 billion ($15 million), perhaps finishing with ¥1.6 billion or so.

>Fortuna's Eye debuts in second place, selling 141,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 302 screens. That admissions figure was enough to achieve first place over the weekend in ticket sales, but its low average ticket price prevented it from reaching the top in gross. Not a bad start, and it should be enough to almost guarantee a total above the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>Masquerade Hotel remain in third place, continuing its very impressive run for this time of year at the box office. Its five week admissions have exceeded 2.8 million. It remains on course to finish around ¥4.5 billion ($40 million+), which will keep it in the yearly top 10 for most of the year, if not for the entire year (albeit at the bottom).

>Bohemian Rhapsody is still going strong, and achieves the fifth biggest fifteenth weekend on record, and is only the sixth film to gross more than ¥100 million in its fifteenth weekend of release. I expect it'll finish near ¥12.5 billion ($111/112 million) unless it surprises at the Oscars this upcoming weekend.

¥245.8 million ($2.2 million), +16%, ¥19.96 billion ($192.8 million) - Your Name. (2016)
¥128.2 million ($1.4 million), -23%, ¥15.08 billion ($159.7 million) - Avatar (2009)
¥113.4 million ($1.0 million), -21%, ¥11.67 billion ($104.6 million) - Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
¥113.0 million ($1.1 million), -11%, ¥18.11 billion ($176.2 million) - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

These are the only six films, on record, to achieve a fourteenth weekend above ¥100 million. Also note that Avatar's USD total is corrected this weekend. Its USD total fluctuated tremendously at this point in its run due to significant exchange rate fluctuations, and this is the most accurate figure.

It just depends on when Toei releases the number. Most final figures are revealed with the home video release, so I'd bet on that time frame.

My thoughts based on Alita's presales, let me know if anything I've said is wildly off!

Alita Presales for Saturday: 20029 adm. from usual locations (~68% of market)

Comparisons I could find:
Aquaman - 18255
The Meg - 13782
MI: Fallout - 48504
Ready Player One - 27598

Not really sure what a good comp would be. But based on Saturday presales alone, they predict the following OW (Sat/Sun):
Aquaman - ¥345m
The Meg - ¥420m
MI:Fallout - ¥264m
Ready P.O. - ¥267m

From this I'd say around ¥300m looks right. MI is usually a little presale heavy in Japan, and RPO is likely slightly more presale heavy than Alita.

My official estimate, based solely on presales, is ¥250-300m ($2.26-$2.71), the 3-day opening is likely around $3.0-3.5m. Probably looking at $15m total based on that, unless it breaks out or drops unexpectedly.

Again, this is purely based on Saturday presales, which as you can see is non-definitive. Just gives a little perspective.

Nice work. It'll probably be a little frontloaded, so I'd go with a prediction on the lower-end of your range. Decent start, but maybe less than expected based on the interest shown the past week or two. That said, it could certainly have done worse, as Hollywood adaptations of domestic material are very hard sales and typically bomb/disappoint.

I didn't get around to a Weekend Forecast this weekend, but I'll have Weekend Estimates up on Sunday.

At the Oscars, Rami Malek wins Best Actor but Best Picture goes to Green Book. So it looks like Bohemian Rhapsody will get a boost at the box office but not as big as it could have been.

I wonder if Green Book can pull off a decent total in Japan given it took home the biggest prize (and also a Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor win).

The headline of "Bohemian Rhapsody wins the most awards at the Academy Awards", most notably Best Actor, will certainly give it a boost, or at the very least, keep it stable for a good week or so.

Green Book opens this Friday, so excellent timing. It'll do decently, as most Best Picture winners do, but it's likely to be another sub-¥1 billion (<$10 million) BP winner. Besides the BP win, there's nothing to really interest moviegoers, in my opinion.

There was a rough storm here yesterday so we lost power for quite some time, so I didn't get around to posting the Weekend Estimates. I'll have the Weekend Actuals and chart updates posted here soon though!

Very close race for #1 this weekend.

>Tonde Saitama dashed Alita's hopes of opening at #1, and quite surprisingly, too, since Toei live-action films very rarely open this high. The film sold a solid 191,000 admissions over the weekend on 319 screens, and reached 247,968 admissions since opening on Friday. Solid debut here, and will be a welcome success for Toei. Expect a total around ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million).

>Alita: Battle Angel had to settle for a very close second place finish, selling 152,000 admissions over the weekend frame across a whopping 880 screens, and reached 212,681 admissions since opening on Friday. It achieved a very high premium (3D, 4D, IMAX, etc.) share of 59.9%, a percentage rarely seen anymore. Overall, this is a mediocre debut, but not unexpected. As I said a couple days ago, this film could have easily bombed, and this opening is high enough to secure a total above ¥1 billion ($10 million) and gives it a chance at ¥1.5 billion.

>My Girlfriend is a Mage hasn't had its weekend actual released yet, but it debuted in third place. This is a very good start for independent distributor Nikkei. I'll update its weekend actual when its available.

>Masquerade Hotel becomes the first domestic live-action film to exceed the ¥4 billion milestone since Code Blue last July. Masayuki Suzuki's latest is on track for a total around ¥4.5 billion ($41/42 million).

>Aquaman took a a bit of tumble, falling five spots in its third weekend of release. Not much has changed regarding its trajectory, it's still behaving like the average Marvel/DC film, and should finish a bit north of ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million).

>Bohemian Rhapsody enjoys, you guessed it, another weekend in the Top 10, its sixteenth-consecutive, delivering yet another great hold. It surpassed Alice in Wonderland to crack the Top 20 All-Time Chart. And, having sold 8,610,213 admissions now, it surpasses Finding Nemo to climb to the 24th position on the Most Attended Films Chart. It's likely to see one more boost at the box office following its four Oscar wins on Sunday, so don't expect it to slow down just yet. It'll probably approach ¥13 billion ($116/117 million) with nearly 9.5 million admissions by the end of its run.

Biggest Sixteenth Weekends (2001-)
¥305.0 million ($2.7 million), -08%, ¥26.56 billion ($218.8 million) - Spirited Away (2001)
¥286.7 million ($2.5 million), +17%, ¥20.51 billion ($197.5 million) - Your Name. (2016)

¥x82.7 million ($0.8 million), -27%, ¥18.29 billion ($177.9 million) - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)

After this weekend, Frozen achieved one more nice weekend before it plummeted (home video release), and then it's basically just Spirited Away and Your Name. worth tracking from weeks 18 and onward.

Spirited Away and Your Name. managed to add over ¥4 billion more, incredibly, to their totals from this point on. Frozen and Howl's Moving Castle go on to add a little over ¥1 billion more to their totals. And Avatar was almost finished at this point, adding just ¥320 million more to its total.

Bohemian Rhapsody will possibly see an increase in its seventeenth weekend, maybe, due to its Oscar wins, but it will probably drop fairly quickly from week 18 onward.
