I wouldn't be surprised if the day after a national discount day ends up a little deflated either.

I'm sorry, but I don't quite understand your question. I'm presuming you mean ¥1 billion, not ¥1 million.

And are you asking which films have had two (or more) weekends above ¥1 billion? If so, it's every film (except Your Name.) that achieved a second weekend above ¥1 billion on the chart above that Jack Sparrow quoted, as well as near the bottom of the last page. As for Your Name., it would later qualify since just its opening weekend missed the mark early in its run.

I think they are asking which film has had two consecutive weekends above 1 million admissions.

Indeed. A 24/25% Mon.-to-Mon. drop is perfectly fine since it's coming off of a discount Sunday.

But do remember that it won't be enjoying any holiday effect to benefit its weekdays until the very end of December. Technically, January 1st (New Year) begins the holiday week, so it may not display particularly strong weekdays until then.

And also remember that the first Frozen was released shortly before Spring Break, so it was able to post huge numbers over its weekdays early on in its run, and then it only had three/four weeks afterwards before reaching the Golden Week holiday frame to put up even bigger numbers over the weekdays. Mid-March is one of the best release date slots of the year in Japan (I'd argue only second to mid-July) since you're able to capitalize on Spring Break and Golden Week in just a 6/7-week period.

Got you.

The first three Harry Potter films were the only films to ever achieve two weekends (consecutive or not) above 1 million admissions until Frozen II joined them this past weekend. So Frozen II can claim the record as the first animated film to ever achieve two weeks with over 1 million admissions.

In modern times anyway. Admissions were on another level in the 1950s/60s, so I'm sure there's a number of releases then that did it first, but Frozen II would probably still be the only animated film on such a list.

>Frozen II utterly and crushingly dominated the weekend box-office once again, and did so by selling an extraordinary 1,240,000 admissions (an increase of 2.5% over its opening weekend!) in its sophomore frame. It was able to achieve the 2nd Biggest Second Weekend of All-Time, only behind Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and set a New Record for Biggest Second Weekend for an Animated Film, besting Howl's Moving Castle.

There was no doubt that the sequel to the Third Biggest Film of All-Time was bound for huge success at the box-office, and so far it's delivering upon that expectation and then some. It's far too early to project a likely total for a film on this scale, but we should be expecting a finish somewhere around the ¥20 billion ($180 million) milestone, potentially cracking the Top 5 Highest Grossing Films of All-Time.

>Doctor Sleep disappointed, possibly bombed. Warner Bros. gave it a decently wide release, but I don't believe it was expected to do very well in the market. Still, missing ¥100 million over the weekend frame is pretty disappointing. It sold 104,591 admissions since Friday.

>It: Chapter Two has begun to slow down after a couple stellar weeks, and probably won't reach the ¥2 billion milestone afterall, thus coming in below its predecessor. This isn't exactly a poor result, it can be tough to replicate a breakout success, but the early weeks of its release were suggesting a better finish.

>Joker is worth mentioning this week as it enjoys its ninth-weekend in the Top 10, because it's now a lock to reach the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone in a couple weeks. The film is without a doubt one of the biggest breakout hits of 2019, grossing more than double any modern-day DC film, and became the highest grossing DC release ever (beating 1989's Batman). It will finish as the 5th Biggest Marvel/DC film ever.

>And finally, Weathering With You hasn't concluded its run quite yet, and exceeded the ¥14 billion milestone after its twentieth-weekend of release on nearly 10.5 million admissions. Makato Shinkai's follow-up to Your Name. wasn't able to reach its heights, but still proved to be a massive success in its own right, becoming the 12th Biggest Film of All-Time (though it'll be bumped to 13th in the coming weeks/months).

20B for Frozen would be super impressive. That would be less than 20% drop from the 1st movie. That is really strong considering how crazy the 1st movie run was. But this is doing it with huge initial weekends. I wonder how much it will drop this weekend without the discount OD benefit it had yesterday. But this is a weekend movie anyway and so will continue to have good holds.

Crazy good 2nd weekend for Frozen (w/ the increase in admissions). I wonder if we'll be left wondering if they should have stuck to March and also enjoyed the benefit of the stronger weekdays/holidays, but I guess it wouldn't have been fair to keep them waiting nearly 6 months after the success of the first.

Given how popular Frozen became, I agree that 4 additional months would be a long wait for such an anticipated film. The Blu-ray/DVD would have been out by that time in many markets, and I wonder if some impatient fans might have decided to buy that instead of going to the theaters. I'm not sure when Frozen 2 is out on Disney+ streaming, but that might also have been an issue affecting a late release in Japan.

So I was looking at the Biggest Third Weekends chart in preparation for next weekend and noticed a small error. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is listed as having dropped 11% in its third weekend when it should be a 23% drop instead.

Hello everyone, I'm new here, I saw the frozen box office in Japan and I wanted to know if anyone could analyze and estimate the box office of frozen 2, for example how much could it do next weekend in terms of admissions and dollars and the next week end? is there any holiday or other national holiday that could help frozen 2 during weekday and weekend days? Could others film impact the box office of frozen 2? And finally how many admissions and dollars according to your estimates the film could it do in Japan?

PS: Are there a few things I need to know about the Japanese film market? Are there discount days like Tuesdays in the US or days or movie theaters are closed? .....

Thank you for this valuable information and thank you for reading and responding

Thank you.

I copy/paste A LOT (and just edit in the different numbers/titles, etc.), so I'm not surprised by the mistake. If you catch any others, definitely share them. I'll edit that number next week when I update that list with Frozen II.

For long-term predictions, such as earnings for next weekend, and the weekend after next, etc., be sure to follow this thread (and participate in discussion!). The Japanese box-office isn't one that can really be projected in the long-term for most releases, typically only annual franchise films that are released on the same weekend every year, so you'll have to wait and see. The Japanese box-office is like a long waiting game.

As for Frozen II's possible final total... It's still too early to give an accurate number, but look for a finish that could approach ¥20 billion ($180 million) and 15 million admissions.

Upcoming Holidays:
The next holiday is New Year (Jan. 1st), and the subsequent bank holidays thereafter, resulting in what's simply known as "New Year Week". It's one of the three strongest weeks at the Japanese box-office, alongside "Golden Week" in late-April/early-May and "Obon Festival" in mid-August.

Competition:
The Japanese box-office isn't one where films really impact one another outside of competing for screens/showtimes, but even then it's pretty rare to see a noticeable impact outside of films competing for premium format showings (3D, 4D, IMAX, etc.). And with more theaters opening that include these formats, and older theaters being upgraded to support them, the competition for premium showings is also decreasing each year in the market. There's ample room (or ability, rather) at the Japanese box-office to support many big films at a time, despite potential audience overlap. In fact, you'll usually see the entire box-office thriving during weeks of heavy competition.

Special Discount Days & Discounted Tickets:
There are many, many ways to get discounted movie ticket prices in the market.

For starters, female moviegoers always get 50% off every Wednesday, which is known as "Ladies' Day". As you can imagine, films with strong female support benefit greatly from this day. Plus females make up ~60% of the moviegoer audience in the market. And secondly, every 1st of the month is "National Discount Day". All the major theater chains offer tickets at 40% off nationwide, which significantly increases their business.

In addition to those individual days, most chains offer a variety of ways to avoid paying the general admission fee. The major chains have one day of the week or month where their members receive discounted tickets. For example, Aeon Cinemas offer discounted tickets every Monday to their members; while Toho Cinemas offer discounted tickets every 20th of the month for their members.
Aeon and Toho are the two largest chains in the country, making up close to 60% of all locations in the market.

The order of biggest weekdays goes like this: Monday/Wednesday > Friday > Tuesday/Thursday.

And finally, most theater chains offer discounted tickets to individuals if they meet a specific criteria. If you're a student, you'll receive a discount. If you're a senior, you'll receive a discount. If you're a couple, you'll receive a discount. Like to see movies after 8PM? You'll receive a discount. It's actually pretty difficult TO pay the general admission fee at most theater chains. The only demographic that is out of luck are males in the workplace that aren't of senior-age yet. Why? Well, simply, they're the group with the most money and most capable of paying full price.

Theater Hours/Closure:
Theaters never close in Japan, and those in Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures can operate close to 24 hours on the weekends (7/8AM-3/4AM). The majority of theaters nationwide open early with the first showings beginning at 7/8AM, but the theaters in and around Tokyo keep playing films up to midnight or later, and it's not surprising to see 2/3AM showtimes on the weekends.

I hope this post answered most of your questions, but feel free to ask more of have me elaborate on anything above.

This list is quickly coming to a close. Everything still in release should be closed by the end of the year, or the week after New Year. 2019 was a very leggy year, and while I'll wait until the in release films close, I'm pretty confident 2019's average multiplier will come in above 2018's, which was up over 2017's.

And remember, Frozen II will be counted as a 2020 release by Eiren, so it'll be included on next year's chart.

Awesome post. Some of the information I think should be in the 1st post of this thread.

Everything looks OK. I anticipate a third weekend of a little under 1 billion Japanese yen, which would be 5th of all time. But we'll see what Corpse thinks.

The weekdays have been good. Not amazing, but this isn't the time of year to expect great weekdays. Look for it to remain incredible strong on the weekends while the weekdays stay relatively average/normal until the last few days of the year.

However, films that go on to have phenomenal runs do often post excellent weekdays despite the time of year, so I'm starting to believe Frozen II won't have a phenomenal run. It's clearly still going to put up a massive total that could crack the All-Time Top 5, but we can likely rule out a multiplier of 20 for example. It'll likely fall inline with more traditional uber-blockbuster films with a multiplier around 12 or so (a 12 gets it extremely close to ¥20 billion).

As for a third weekend prediction, a number around ¥1 billion (as cannastop suggested) sounds reasonable, and attainable. So, it should be aiming for a spot in the Top 5 Biggest Third Weekends.

I only expected around ¥16.5B/$150M at the beginning
:whaa:

So this is music to my ears. :hahaha:

Maybe I'm being a bit conservative, but I am still predicting a 10x multiplier or lower for Frozen II (¥15-16 billion) even after the insane first two weekends it's had. After seeing how Toy Story 4 failed to get even an 8x multiplier in the best release slot for an animated film (mid-July), I'm not getting my hopes up too high.

Just watch the next detective conan trailer, I begin to see the pattern. They'll select one handsome minor character as the main focus of each film.
