An improvement over estimates across the board, and this weekend ended up having better holds then the typical middle weekend in January.

>Demon Slayer: Mugen Train continued its reign atop the box office, and achieved its 14th-consecutive weekend at #1 now. Over its fourteenth weekend, it sold an additional 123,000 admissions, bringing its cumulative admissions up to 26,445,637 (over 2 million higher than the previous record). Even after all this time, it's a mind-boggling achievement. Look for a finish near ¥38 billion (~$365 million) with nearly 28 million admissions, but don't be surprised if it has some event announced over the Demon Slayer Festival on Feb. 13-14 that could change things.

>Gintama: The Final ended up avoiding a 50% drop, which is pretty good considering the giveaway event over its full first weekend/week of release. It also has a couple events happening over the next two weeks: Beginning Jan. 22nd, moviegoers can download an app to listen to commentary from the cast during special showings. And beginning on Jan. 29th, moviegoers can receive a limited-print double-sided poster (in collaboration with Demon Slayer again). So it should have a pretty good run over the next several weeks, and I believe it still has a good shot at reaching ¥2 billion (~$20 million). Excluding the two live-action films, it needs to surpass Gintama: The Final Chapter's ¥1.7 billion total to become the highest grossing animated film in the franchise.

>Poupelle of Chimney Town experienced an outstanding weekend hold of just 5%! It took a few weeks, but it appears that WOM has kicked in now with this hold, in addition to it becoming the most searched for film on Eiga and other movie websites. It's likely going to reach the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone now (or get incredibly close), which is an excellent achievement for an animated film only based on a novel and not an established anime/manga or video game. Very impressive.

>The Promised Neverland had a great hold of its own, and and will also be aiming to reach the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone. Its chances are lower than Poupelle's, but another hold or two like this can still get it there. ¥1.5 billion or so was where most expectations were hovering around, so it's exceeded those, even if not by too much.

>Natsume's Book of Friends: The Waking Rock and the Strange Visitor hasn't had its actual released yet (not uncommon for limited releases), so I'll update it in the coming days.

It's probably aiming for ¥150 million (~$1.5 million) or a tad more.

Part 2 comes out on February 11th.

And a very interesting announcement was made today about the upcoming Detective Conan film (Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet) being released on April 16th (it was delayed from last April).

In anticipation for the new film, there is going to be a compilation film that will combine footage featuring the Akai family (featured in the new film) from throughout the long-running anime. It will be released on February 11th and have a limited three-week run through March 4th. The compilation film will also feature a new trailer of the new film, along with a special message for moviegoers.

Not really knowing the state of the Hollywood films this year (Disney's slate in particular looks rather lackluster than normal), I don't see any that would be likely ¥10 billion contenders. Therefore Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet is a strong contender to be 2021's top grossing film among all announced/known 2021 films. There is still a lot of time for other films to be announced though--domestic films can indeed be announced just a few months before they're released--but Detective Conan has set the bar pretty high in recent years, and this year's film could certainly set it even higher.

Nope that won't happen even with Jan-Feb being weak months there are releases that open to 150-200¥ which should be enough going forward to beat DS. Plus Corpse mentioned that there are three movies releasing on Jan end weekend even though it does not look likely but one of them has the potential to surprise and overtake DS.

I mean, never say never, but yes, one of the films on Jan. 29th could dethrone it, but if they would fail, then I Fable 2 will almost certainly do it on Feb. 5th.

97-Day Cumulative Total: ¥36,284,039,800 ($347.0 million) / 26,516,637

Note: Mon.-Fri. are rounded estimates (excluding Holiday Mondays), therefore adding up each day won't equal the actual total.

Very good Wednesday for Demon Slayer (down ~5% versus last week), and for the entire box office. Many films experienced strong holds of 5-15%, some in the 15-25% range, and a few even increased. The 20th is MOVIX Cinema Day, and while it does provide a boost, it's usually very small and not particularly noticeable most of the time.

Wednesday probably isn't an outlier this week either, as yesterday (Tuesday) also had very good holds of 5-20% or so in most cases.

The holds were even better throughout the day (around -8-9% on tue and it was even up 4% on wed before 6PM), then declined afterwards as the shows really died off past that time. I think we'll keep seeing really good holds during these measures.

It would be nice if any of them were nominated.

The 27 nominees this year don't appear very impressive as a group, though I haven't seen all the films that have been submitted, so it seems like a fair year for a Japanese film to get a nomination.

It could be great for Demon Slayer to be nominated at march 15. A nomination can draw more worldwide attention on this 93rd ceremony and DS movie !

Question : Do we have a chance to know the budget of Demon Slayer movie someday ? For example if it becomes one of the 5 nominees...?

Now that Gintama Semi-Final has finished airing, anime-only viewers can finally go and watch Gintama The Final
If this weekend or the next didn't see Gintama The Final rising in terms of admissions, then it'll likely go only for 2billion like Corpse said.

¥2 billion shouldn't be viewed as an "only" milestone to aim for. That'd make it the highest grossing animated film in the series.

In addition to this, the majority of Shonen films (or just films based on a manga or anime in general) are typically restricted to whatever the audience peak was ahead of its release, so I'd say Gintama is pulling in a bit more than it probably should be if we look at its manga sales and TV ratings. This is why most animated Shonen films, in particular, are usually good for ¥1.5/2 billion at most, since that's somewhere around 1-1.5 million admissions. 1-1.5 million people is usually the range that most popular series' end up having (those that buy the individual volumes and/or those that watch/watched the anime episodes when they air/aired).

It was ¥700 million (~$7 million). ¥500 million on production, ¥200 million on marketing.

Budgets can be hard to come by in the market, but most anime films (based on an anime, not films from Ghibli and such) tend to fall around ¥500 million or so.

It was ¥700 million (~$7 million). ¥500 million on production, ¥200 million on marketing.

Budgets can be hard to come by in the market, but most anime films (based on an anime, not films from Ghibli and such) tend to fall around ¥500 million or so.

So the budget is around ¥700M and so far, it made ¥36.5B yen in Japan and around ¥3.5B yen = ¥40B yen.....
So..... the total gross now is more than 50 times the budget.

oooof, Fate Heaven's Feel Spring Song started its general screening in my country and there's basically no one here lmao xD

And the Mugen Train that's airing since December 27 (here) is still grabbing some full seats in some time schedule.
Really shows how much of a difference the popularity is even if it came from the same studio (ufotable).

It's rare for anything big to open in January or February, and that's also the case this year as well. They have many releases, just nothing of major interest. Evangelion was only here since it was delayed from last Summer.

The second Fable film (starring Junichi Okada) opens on Feb. 5th, and I believe it'll be the biggest film released until March. The first Fable opened to ¥310.0 million ($2.9 million) and grossed ¥1.77 billion ($16.2 million) in 2019.

March has several notable films as usual though, including: the latest Doraemon, Raya and the Last Dragon (Disney animated film), Monster Hunter (though Japanese audiences typically ignore Hollywood attempts at domestic material), the latest Precure, Kiba: The Fangs of Fiction (based on a popular novel), Tom and Jerry (not sure of its appeal, but it has a respectable theater count), and more.

And April is looking incredible this year, but I'll talk about it at a later time.

Seems Fable got delayed.

All of its volumes are very close to breaking 5 million now.

I think the manga sales have started to slow overall though, unless there are still stocking issues. I'm sure it'll maintain a presence for the better part of the year (especially if a new season or movie is announced next month), but I wouldn't expect any further weeks of it monopolizing the top X spots on the charts and such.

And speaking of this week's charts... Jujutsu Kaisen definitely showed how popular it's become this week with all of its volumes finally being restocked. It sold over 1.7 million copies in a week without any new volume release, and occupied the Top 15/16 spots. All 15 of its volumes, which includes the prequel book, will break 1 million over the next week or two (7 already have). Again, I think this is only the second time (after Demon Slayer) a series has achieved chart dominance like this before.

It seems to me that manga readers are more interested in darker material now than they were 5-10+ years ago, probably in part due to the aging population over the years. It'll be interesting to watch if WSJ continues to focus more on darker, more adult-appealing works in the future versus their more teen/young-adult audience.
