Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (03/09-10)
I can regularly do a top 12 at the very least. A top 15 is doable, but it wouldn't be very often due to numbers, especially for films released by independent distributors, not being available until later in the week.

When I post the Weekend Actuals either tonight or early tomorrow morning (a bit busy tonight), I'll do a top 12.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of Moon Exploration goes completely unchallenged for its #1 position, and achieves the second best second weekend decline in the franchise (since 2000, anyway), only behind Stand By Me, Doraemon. Its cumulative total is 13% behind last year's film, an improvement upon the 17% of its opening weekend. The thirty-ninth entry in the long-running franchise is on track for a total north of ¥4.5 billion ($40 million+), but I wouldn't rule out a ¥5 billion ($45 million+) total just yet.

>Tonde Saitama has an incredible third weekend hold, and earns a third weekend that's higher than its opening weekend (it increased last weekend). This film really came out of nowhere as I said on Friday, and could very well end up with one of the best runs of 2019.

>Green Book holds very strong in third place, and is on track to become the highest grossing Best Picture winner since 2011's The King's Speech. Very impressive.

>Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse debuts in fourth place (fifth in admissions), selling 98,074 admissions over the weekend frame across 337 screens, and reaching 151,157 admissions since opening on Friday (plus its limited previews last week). I'd consider this a fairly disappointing start, though it's solid enough for a non-Disney/Pixar imported animated release in the market. Expectations were likely just set for a higher performance due to it winning Best Animated Film this year at the Oscars.

>The Mule comes in fifth place (fourth in admissions), selling a decent 116,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 238 screens, and reaching 157,978 admissions since opening on Friday. This is a solid start that may result in it achieving the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone, making Japan its second strongest international market behind France.

>Bohemain Rhapsody keeps on entertaining Japanese moviegoers, as it enjoys its eighteenth-consecutive week in the top 10 thanks to another great hold. It will surpass Beauty and the Beast (2017) in a few days to become the 18th highest grossing film ever.

>Alita: Battle Angel experiences another harsh decline, this time managing to drop over 50%... I actually don't believe it's going to reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone now, and will finish its run as a pretty significant bomb in the market.

>The bottom of the Top 10 is a little unclear at the moment, as the weekend numbers for Psycho Pass and Ultraman are estimates. The weekend rankings (revenue) have Psycho Pass in tenth place and Ultraman in eleventh place, below Alita, but both films are above Alita in the weekend rankings (admissions). And all three films are ahead of City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes in revenue and admissions, meaning there's a very, very small margin of just ¥1,338,200 ($12,000) separating all four films.

Mary Poppins Returns didn't cross ¥1 billion? BOM has its total at $9,747,763 as of March 3.

Whoops. It did, last week. I forgot to include it in last week's updates, my bad. It's been added to the post above.

Tracking ended for it this past week. I imagine its final total will end up at ¥1.10-1.12 billion (just barely above $10 million).

Any chance The Fist of Blue Sapphire will be the breakthrough for Detective Conan franchise? It has Makoto Kyogoku which is my most favorite character.

Shockingly Captain Marvel is currently looking to debut with the best non-Avengers/Spider-Man CBM to date...

The Friday 7pm number is 59,963, compared to Infinity War at 62,621 and Aquaman at 28,398, things are looking very positive!

Now whether this is frontloading due to Endgame I don't know.

Breakthrough? The movie franchise was successful basically as soon as it launched, and the last three films have all exceeded the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone. Last year's even approached ¥10 billion, and was only the third film in the last ten years to open with 1 million+ admissions...

Yes, very surprised by its Friday performance, but maybe more so by its weekend pre-sales and early morning ticket sales for Saturday. All the numbers I'm running are projecting a debut above ¥500 million (¥550 million is about the average), which would celebrate the first time a non-Avengers/Spider-Man Marvel/DC film has ever opened to that mark.

It's probably going to dethrone Doraemon, but I expect it to still be a pretty close finish in the end. Doraemon will likely stay above ¥450 million in its third weekend. Captain Marvel will very likely score a big victory on Saturday, but Doraemon will probably take Sunday.

Weekend Forecast will be posted in a couple hours.

Also Olive over at BOT mentioned something about a holiday-thing which may be inflating CM's numbers, what do you know about this exactly? (Might've been something about spring break or something)

Also does this lead to the possibility of Endgame increasing over Infinity War in Japan?

No holidays. Spring Break will begin to boost the box office very late next week through the end of the month.

However, some schools (likely just elementary and pre-school) were definitely out on Friday since Doraemon saw a nice increas over last week, but everything else held normally.

Endgame will definitely increase over Infinity War. Finale films almost always see big gains over their predecessors on opening weekend, as long as they don't follow a particularly poorly received predecessor.

>Captain Marvel is on course to debut at the #1 spot this weekend, dethroning Doraemon which seemed poised to reign atop the weekend box office until April. And not only will Ms. Marvel likely take the #1 spot, her film is well on track to claim the biggest opening weekend for a Marvel/DC film outside of the Avengers/Spider-Man franchises.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of Moon Exploration will likely slip to second place in its third weekend, but pre-sales are indicating it might match/beat the third weekend of last year's film. If it does drop around 25%, and obviously any hold that's better than that, its chances of reaching the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone go up significantly.

>Precure Miracle Universe is the 26th entry in the overall Precure film franchise, and it's looking to continue the success the series regained last year and should debut with one of the biggest debuts in the franchise.

Looks like this will be the final weekend for BR in Top 10.

Breakthrough? The movie franchise was successful basically as soon as it launched, and the last three films have all exceeded the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone. Last year's even approached ¥10 billion, and was only the third film in the last ten years to open with 1 million+ admissions...

I mean compare to movies within its own franchise. Just like how Broly is consider a breakthrough for Dragon Ball movies.

To think about it objectively
Primary objective 1: Biggest opening weekend amongs Conan's films 2. Most domestic total among Conan's films
Secondary objective: Most WW boxoffice total among Conan's films

I'd still say it's already happened. 2016's The Darkest Nightmare opened well above the franchise average, and was the first broke ¥1 billion on opening weekend. It then became the first film in the franchise to achieve blockbuster status by exceeding ¥5 billion. Since it though, the last two films have achieve even greater heights.

Here is how Captain Marvel performed on Saturday compared to every Marvel/DC film that has opened above ¥300 million since 2015 (at the usual locations = two-thirds of market):

92% higher than Black Panther (¥309.7 million)
79% higher than Aquaman (¥314.3 million)
50% higher than Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice (¥371.3 million)
43% higher than Deadpool (¥383.3 million)
33% higher than Deadpool 2 (¥375.1 million)
28% higher than Doctor Strange (¥394.1 million)
27% higher than Suicide Squad (¥390.1 million)
12% higher than Captain America: Civil War (¥448.8 million)
04% higher than Venom (¥439.0 million)
03% higher than Spider-Man: Homecoming (¥448.5 million)
_________
24% lower than Avengers: Infinity War (¥672.4 million)
33% lower than Avengers: Age of Ultron (¥793.9 million)

Each film's opening weekend is in parenthesis.

That's a relative overperformance by Captain Marvel. I assume it's just the connection to Endgame that's boosting the numbers like everywhere else?

I wouldn't say there is a connection to Endgame. It's an origin movie set in the 90s. It's more so because of its proximity to Endgame's release, just like Black Panther's over-performance due to its proximity to Infinity War's release.

There might be some benefit that Captain Marvel is receiving by being released between the last two Avenger films. It is performing significantly better than it really should be.

However, while Captain Marvel is going to have the biggest opening weekend for a Marvel/DC film in the market outside of Avengers/Spider-Man films, it's showing early signs of heavy frontloading. Its Sunday is going to be down 15-20% compared to Saturday, which is quite high. As a result, it's going to debut in second place behind Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of Moon Exploration in weekend admissions. It'll probably still take the #1 spot in revenue due to a much higher avg. ticket price, but it's going to be pretty close.

As for Black Panther, it didn't receive any boost in Japan by being released a couple months before Infinity War, which makes sense because why would it? While hyped some, Infinity War wasn't the finale, and its opening weekend was actually below Age of Ultron in the market (it would outgross it though).
