Upcoming Weekend Releases [Theater Counts]

WIDE
02/20, [211] - The Fault in Our Stars (Fox)
02/21, [316] - American Sniper (Warner Bros.)

LIMITED [10-99 theaters]
02/21, [50] - The Nut Job (Inter Films)
02/21, [40] - The Case of Hana & Alice (T-Joy)
02/21, [38] - The Alfee 40th Anniversary Film - The Last Genesis (Sony)
02/21, [33] - Fantastic Girls (Nagoya Broadcasting Network)
02/21, [19] - Pirameki's Children Story (Yoshimoto Creative Agency)
02/21, [17] - MET Live Viewing: The Merry Widow - Lehar (Shochiku)

Clint Eastwood is one of the most-beloved international directors/actors in Japan , and his films always do well both critically (Jersey Boys is a Best Foreign Picture nominee this year) and at the box-office. So, with American Sniper becoming his biggest film in the US, in addition to the Oscar buzz, I believe it has breakout potential despite the subject matter.

Weekend Forecast (02/21-22)

05 (--) ¥65 million ($550,000), 0, ¥85 million ($725,000), The Fault in Our Stars (Fox) NEW
06 (04) ¥54 million ($455,000), -37%, ¥580 million ($4.9 million), Mortdecai (Kadokawa) Week 3
07 (06) ¥50 million ($425,000), -26%, ¥1.19 billion ($10.2 million), Annie (Sony) Week 5
08 (05) ¥44 million ($375,000), -45%, ¥220 million ($1.9 million), Fifty Shades of Grey (Toho-Towa) Week 2
09 (07) ¥39 million ($330,000), -40%, ¥760 million ($6.5 million), Joker Game (Toho) Week 4
10 (08) ¥38 million ($325,000), -36%, ¥150 million ($1.3 million), The Mourner (Toei) Week 2
11 (09) ¥34 million ($290,000), -31%, ¥7.54 billion ($64.3 million), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 10
12 (11) ¥32 million ($270,000), -33%, ¥275 million ($2.4 million), Mr. Children [Reflection] (Nikkatsu) Week 3

American Sniper is in perfect position for a breakout performance. It's outpacing Terrace House last weekend so far, and is currently outselling the rest of the Top 5 combined. Clint Eastwood has forever been a popular draw in Japan, but Sniper should turn out to be one of his biggest films from the past few years.

If it doesn't break ¥300 million over the weekend, it'll come very close. And assuming it has fine legs (it is Eastwood), especially if it can surprise at the Oscars on Sunday, it has ¥2 billion+ (up to $20 million+) potential.

The Fault in Our Stars will join the ever growing list of young adult/popular book adaptations that disappoint/bomb in Japan. And it's funny that it follows Fifty Shades which just bombed last weekend. The Fault in Our Stars should only just make a Top 5 debut over the weekend.

And the only limited release that could break the Top 10 is The Case of Hana & Alice, but it's not looking likely right now.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (Sniper/Fault)
Usual Locations [~43% of the Market] - Weekend Admissions (02/21-22)

105,966 (--), American Sniper (Warner Bros.) NEW
46,826 (-51%), Terrace House: Closing Door (Toho) Week 2
34,254 (-24%), Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 10
24,784 (-44%), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount) Week 3
23,390 (+05%), Mr. Children [Reflection] (Nikkatsu) Week 3
15,309 (-50%), Mortdecai (Kadokawa) Week 3
14,931 (-36%), Annie (Sony) Week 5
13,674 (--), The Fault in Our Stars (Fox) NEW
11,832 (-59%), Fifty Shades of Grey (Toho-Towa) Week 2
11,092 (-08%), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 10
10,787 (-47%), Joker Game (Toho) Week 4
9,720 (-42%), Moomins on the Riviera (Phantom Film) Week 2
9,207 (-64%), La La La at Rock Bottom (Gaga) Week 2
9,018 (-53%), The Mourner (Toei) Week 2
6,717 (-45%), Maestro! (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) Week 4

Overall Weekend drops will be slightly better than those above since last Saturday was a Toho Cinemas Day (40% off at their locations), which is included among the Usual Locations. Expect most holds to improve around 5%.

>American Sniper performed very, very well. 106,000 admissions here could be enough to have reached 250,000 over the weekend, which will be more than enough to put it over the ¥300 million mark. It'll end up having the best debut so far this calendar year (until the next Doraemon opens in 2 weeks anyway).

>The Fault in Our Stars only did roughly half the business of Fifty Shades of Grey from last weekend. A sub-¥50 million debut is very likely.

>Mr. Children [Reflection] won't rank nearly that high in the Overall Weekend Ranking. It's a limited release that is playing very strongly at Toho Cinemas, so its performance is being greatly inflated at the Usual Locations because of that.

I'll post the Weekend Estimates shortly.

>American Sniper should be the first film this calendar year to debut above ¥300 million, and delivers one of Eastwood's better debuts in recent years. Unless legs turn out surprisingly bad, which they should be quite the opposite of really with Eastwood's name and the Oscar buzz, it'll probably exceed ¥2 billion (about $20 million).

I'll post a list of Clint Eastwood's films opening weekends and totals later on today. Japan has been one of his best markets for decades.

>The Fault in Our Stars joins the young adult/international book phenomenon disappointment club, along with Fifty Shades of Grey, Twilight, and The Hunger Games. None of these films have had any impact in Japan, often barely even debuting in the Top 5.

>Mr. Children [Reflection]'s weekend estimate is a very, very rough guess. It should be in the Top 10 again thanks to its performance at the Usual Locations alone, but it doesn't seem to be doing much of anything else elsewhere.

Big Hero 6's run is starting to slow down in Japan, even though it's still in the Top 3 after 10 weeks, but the Best Animated Picture win at the Academy Awards tonight will give it an additional boost.

It should remain in the Top 10 through March, so it should be looking at 14-16 weeks there. Very, very impressive.

Weekend Ranking (02/21-22)

Image

01 (--) American Sniper (Warner Bros.) DEBUT
02 (01) Terrace House: Closing Door (Toho) Week 2
03 (03) Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 10
04 (02) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount) Week 3
05 (11) Mr. Children [Reflection] (Nikkatsu) Week 3
06 (04) Mortdecai (Kadokawa) Week 3
07 (09) Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 10
08 (06) Annie (Sony) Week 4
09 (--) The Fault in Our Stars (Fox) DEBUT
10 (07) Joker Game (Toho) Week 4

Before I post the numbers from this past weekend, the Revenue Top 10 (above) and the Admissions Top 10 differed so much this weekend, that it's worth noting

The Top 10 in Admissions:
01. American Sniper / 02. Terrace House / 03. Big Hero 6 / 04. Teenage Ninja Turtles / 05. Yo-Kai Watch (!)
06. Mortdecai / 07. Annie / 08. Mr. Children / 09. Joker Game / 10. The Fault in Our Stars.

Now then...

>American Sniper delivered the best debut this calendar year, and the best opening since Yo-Kai Watch/Big Hero 6 opened against each other on December 20th.

Clint Eastwood's latest earned an impressive ¥332,396,600 ($2.8 million) with 249,321 admissions on 333 screens over the weekend. Clint Eastwood has been a big name in Japan for decades, and American Sniper earns him his best debut in the market since Letters from Iwo Jima debuted to ¥496 million in 2006.

Expect American Sniper to finish between ¥2-2.5 billion (around $20 million).

>Big Hero 6 remains strong in the Top 3. In its 10th weekend in release, it grossed ¥131,177,800 ($1.1 million) with 101,615 admissions. And so far, after 10 weeks, it has accumulated a huge ¥8,613,017,600 ($73.4 million) with 6,766,976 admissions.

And right when its run looked like it'd be coming to an end in a few weeks, it wins the Best Animated Feature Oscar last night. It's bound to receive a boost, though probably small, from this, and will now exceed ¥9 billion without any struggle.

>Mr. Children [Reflection] surged this weekend, up 9% over last weekend. I haven't been following it, but the band must have participated in some stage greetings or something. It rose from 11th all the way into the TOP 5. I hope, that eventually, some official figures are released for it.

>The Fault in Our Stars did worse than even estimates suggested. The film barely made the Top 10, earning a dismal ¥38,686,500 ($330,000) with 28,854 admissions on 211 screens. It'll be lucky to reach ¥200 million ($1.5 million) in Japan.

>Fifty Shades of Grey is, well, no longer in the Top 10! It's the first film so far this DECADE that has debuted in the Top 5 (#5) to fall out of the Top 10 after a single week in release.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Big Hero 6 Weekly Charts
Big Hero 6 Aims for the Top 10 (Animated Films)

Image

¥600 million ($5.2 million)
¥454 million ($3.9 million), -24%, ¥2.08 billion ($17.4 million)
¥665 million ($5.6 million), +46%, ¥4.14 billion ($35.2 million)
¥546 million ($4.6 million), -18%, ¥5.72 billion ($48.6 million)
¥426 million ($3.7 million), -22%, ¥6.41 billion ($54.7 million)
¥349 million ($3.0 million), -18%, ¥7.03 billion ($59.9 million)
¥307 million ($2.6 million), -12%, ¥7.57 billion ($64.5 million)
¥227 million ($1.9 million), -26%, ¥7.97 billion ($67.9 million)
¥163 million ($1.4 million), -28%, ¥8.38 billion ($71.5 million)
¥131 million ($1.1 million), -20%, ¥8.61 billion ($73.4 million)

Since Big Hero 6 won the Best Animated Feature Oscar, and with the 1st of the Month falling on Sunday (1st = discount day), either it's going to have an upcoming weekend increase or a very, very strong hold (likely single digit).

It's also still in the Weekend Top 3, and should remain in the Top 10 throughout all of March, too (achieving anywhere from 14-16 weeks there). What started off as a very good opening and strong first week, has turned into quite the extraordinary performance.

16. 13.96 - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (July, 2003)
17. 13.83 - Thermae Romae (Apr., 2012)
18. 13.64 - Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World (May, 2004)
19. 13.09 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Dec., 2001)
20. 12.98 - Summer Wars (Aug., 2009)
21. 12.88 - Ted (Jan., 2013)
22. 12.51 - The Wind Rises (July, 2013)
23. 12.50 - The Phantom of the Opera (Jan., 2005)
24. 12.48 - Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (Aug., 2003)
25. 12.24 - Finding Nemo (Dec., 2003)

Out: 26. 11.56 - The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki (July, 2012)

The lowest possible multiplier Big Hero 6 ends up with now is a 15.1/15.2, which would be just shy of the Top 10. However, it's more likely to finish with a 15.4/15.5, which will earn itself a Top 10 spot. And if its Oscar win is able to extend its run into Spring Break (late March), and everything else goes well (surviving the strong March competition ahead), it's possible for it to achieve a final multiplier of 16.

Also of note is that average multipliers in Japan have been improving in more recent years (2008-), and using 2000-2014, there are now more wide-releases with multipliers over 10 from 2007/2008-2014 than 2000-2007/2008.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: 38th Japan Academy Prize
‘The Eternal Zero’ Takes Eight Japan Academy Awards

Takashi Yamazaki’s controversial World War II kamikaze drama “The Eternal Zero” swept eight Japan Academy prizes at the 38th awards ceremony, held at a Tokyo hotel Friday evening.

Based on a novel by outspoken nationalist author Naoki Hyakuta, the film tells the story of a skilled veteran pilot (Junichi Okada) of the famed Zero fighter plane who is reviled by some of his comrades for wanting to finish the war alive, but changes his mind once he begins instructing young pilots destined for one-way suicide flights. The film was the biggest live-action hit of 2014.

“The Eternal Zero” won Picture of the Year honors and Yamazaki was named best director.

Meanwhile, star Okada received the best actor award, as well as a best supporting actor prize for his work in the Takashi Koizumi period drama “A Samurai Chronicle.” He is the first male actor to scoop two Japan Academy acting honors. The best actress prize went to Rie Miyazawa for her portrayal of an embezzling bank employee in Daihachi Yoshida’s drama “Pale Moon,” while Haru Kuroki took supporting actress for her turn as a naive-but-strong-willed maid in the Yoji Yamada family drama “The Little House.”

The Animation of the Year award went to “Stand by Me Doraemon,” also directed by Yamazaki, while the Outstanding Foreign Language Film prize was awarded to “Frozen,” the biggest hit at the Japanese box office last year.

American Sniper will be his biggest film since Letters from Iwo Jima, so I don't think so. :mer:

The fact that Jersey Boys was even nominated for Best Foreign Language Picture shows much much they love Eastwood.

Yeah true. I am just surprised that American Sniper didn't get a nomination. Or is that a 2015 film?

It's a 2015 film, and it's very likely to get nominated. Gone Girl, Big Hero 6, and American Sniper are all early candidates for next years Best Foreign Language Picture.

From the three films I mentioned, I'd go with American Sniper. It's still really early, though, and many other films will enter the fray.

Nearly all of the Oscar winners are 2015 releases, so they should be in contention as well, especially Birdman being the biggest winner. All of them will be released in March/April in Japan like every year, to capitalize on their Oscar success, so more will be known about them pretty soon.

The Imitation Game has glowing early reviews, and Cumberbatch is a popular name from his work in Sherlock (quite popular in Japan). Critics and audiences alike are favorable toward thrillers like this one, too, so it has good potential (plus the WWII factor).

12,760 (-01%), Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 11
9,639 (--), Have a Song on Your Lips (Asmik Ace) NEW

3,054 (-39%), Joker Game (Toho) Week 5
3,018 (-32%), Maestro! (Shochiku/Asmik Ace) Week 4

Great Saturday, and considering Sunday will be much, much bigger (1st of the Month = discount day), we're probably going to see some excellent holds (sub-30%) across the board.

American Sniper is looking at a good second weekend atop the box-office before it's dethroned next weekend by Doraemon.

Excellent for Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin I. It sold through nearly 70% of its available admissions yesterday. The Usual Locations does, however, represent 62% of its total theater count (8 out of 13), so it should come in a couple spots lower on the national level. I figured it had a good chance of breaking the Weekend Top 10 despite the theater count of just 13, but it might debut in the Top 5.

Big Hero 6 being down 1% shows it's already benefiting from its Oscar win, and it'll surely see a weekend increase once Sunday is over. Perhaps even a double digit increase. It'll also remain in the Top 3 (should even rise to #2) for an 11th-consecutive weekend.

It's no Frozen, but it has already destroyed any other previous performance by a Walt Disney Animation film (opening, legs, total, etc.), and honestly, it's performance is better than any Pixar film, too. It'll finish behind Finding Nemo and Toy Story 3 (its admissions may pass the latter, too), but its weekly run and legs have been much stronger.

The other openers are pretty disappointing. Have a Song on Your Lips should have a big Sunday, but it isn't going to come close to ¥100 million over the weekend. Chef looks to be doing alright, but 75% of its theater count (46 out of 61) is represented at the Usual Locations, so it won't come in too much higher than it already is. It should just miss the Weekend Top 10 (Fault, Mortdecai, and Annie will be above it).
