Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Actuals (02/27-28); Charts Upd
The 41th Doraemon movie was supposed to come out this weekend, but it was postponed. With the Covid situation improving in Japan, when do you think they'll be releasing it ? During Golden Week ? This summer ?

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Actuals (02/27-28); Charts Upd
April (Golden Week) is too crowded to put it there, so I'd be surprised if it gets rescheduled for then.

I would suspect an early August release again (like how the 40th film was moved from March to August last year), assuming the next Pokemon releases in July as usual. May and June aren't really doable since Doraemon relies on holiday support since it skews so young.

March (Spring Break), April (Golden Week), July (Summer Vacation), August (Obon Festival), and December (Christmas/New Year) are the only months that work for young-skewing releases.

They should have just kept the March release, honestly, if it was complete. It's been the traditional release date every year (nearly) for 4 decades now, and restrictions were almost certainly going to be lifted the week after its release, so they could have just delayed it by just one-week if they wanted the bigger opening weekend. My guess, as someone mentioned in here as well, is that it wasn't delayed due to the restrictions at the time, but rather because the production itself wasn't going to be finished in time for March.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: March Release Schedule
March got quite crowded in recent weeks. Should be a very good month.

Although it looks like Raya is in at least 100 fewer theaters (more like ~120/130 less) than the typical Disney release, perhaps due to their Disney+ same-day release "strategy." Good thing the Japan box office isn't reliant on Disney releases if this would become the norm for them moving forward.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: March Release Schedule
Based on Friday's seating and showtimes, it appears that Disney is "dumping" Raya and the Last Dragon in theaters.

Its theater count is indeed only two-thirds of the typical big Disney release and it's only the fifth widest playing film for the day in terms of seating.

Japan is frequently one of Disney's strongest international markets, pretty often the best, so very unusual decision since the box office has been largely normal for 9 months now. I'm guessing they're banking on it performing better on Disney+.

Heading into the weekend an increase from last Thursday FOR DS bodes well for another great weekend hold.

Season 2 has not aired but there is also a hot debate about whether parents should allow kids to watch Red Light District arc or not. Kimetsu is so influential and trendy that it becomes a crucial part of Japanese families' lifestyles these days :funny:

I hope Ufotable will not change the story. There is a bitten lesson that Ufotable should learn from Promised Neverland Season 2. Now that series is boycotted by fans due to skipping a vital arc.

Seeing the increases it's been getting this week (thursday&friday especially), particularly in the evening/night showings, it could see a 3rd weekend increase in a row and maybe come close to your name's 21st weekend with a small chance of beating it.

DS mostly is not getting the record and I don't think an increase is happening again this weekend but never say never.

Anyways, it looks like the restrictions are going to be extended in 4 prefectures around Tokyo. Evangelion just cannot catch a break lol.

Yeah, read that yesterday. It's for the best. Cases have plummeted around 70% I believe in and around Tokyo, but they were aiming for 80-90% before lifting restrictions. The two-week extension will likely get them there based on current daily numbers. And with the Olympics just 4 months away, definitely don't want any increases ahead of time when they can be prevented by a simple extension.

I imagine Evangelion will get delayed again, since it needs Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures to be open past 8pm, but they can just reschedule it later in March. It's also nearly 3 hours, so its last showtimes would have to begin before 5PM (like 4:30PM) in these prefectures with the restrictions.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: March Release Schedule
Unfortunately, Raya and the Last Dragon is a major bomb. It barely made the Top 10 (10th place) for Friday, only grossing around $40,000. It'll do better over the weekend since it skews younger/toward families, but it doesn't look like it has any chance of debuting in the Top 5 and might be closer to 10th than 5th (thinking ~8th right now). Even if it doubles up on Saturday and increases on Sunday, I don't see an opening much higher than $250,000 if it can get there.

It's only playing in 244 locations (~30-40% less than the typical Disney release), largely due to Toho Cinemas (the busiest chain in the country) not playing it. I'm guessing they weren't on board with Disney's Disney+ same-day release and/or Disney's rumored higher share request to play their films now. Also, I didn't check many Movix Cinema locations, but the handful I did check also aren't playing Raya.

Toho and Movix combined account for almost 100 theaters, which would have brought Raya's count up closer to the typical big Disney release. And without Toho Cinemas, your film is pretty much DOA in Japan.

I would say Disney shot themselves in the foot here (and they did at the box-office), but I have to imagine they make enough on Disney+ to make up for any theatrical losses, even if it's extreme and in one of their biggest markets. In fact, it's probably part of their strategy to get more people to buy into Disney+.

141-Day Cumulative Total: ¥38,272,817,550 ($366.35 million) / 27,778,343 Admissions

Note: Mon.-Fri. are rounded estimates (excluding Holiday Mondays), therefore adding up each day won't equal the exact actual total.

Three straight days of being up over last week. Monday and Tuesday obviously weren't up since last Mon. and Tues. were boosted by a holiday. We could be looking at a third straight weekend increase this weekend since more theaters are back to normal operating hours. And if it doesn't increase again, it's going to see a miniscule drop.

Well, well, well... First, I expanded the Top 10 since the bottom half and a couple films below is very contested and could go many ways in terms of positions, but also to include Raya. And second... new #1?

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is eyeing a possible return to the #1 spot this weekend, having been dethroned by Loved Like a Flower Bouquet six-weeks ago. I'm "predicting" it to happen, at least in revenue, but don't take this forecast to mean it definitely will. A weekend increase, its third in a row, is looking good (not guaranteed, so don't be disappointed if it would drop) following more prefectures having their restrictions lifted and resuming evening/night showings again. But it's going to be a very close race between these two films.

The Sun Does Not Move should have a decent enough start. If it can open above ¥100 million, which I believe it can, I think Warner Bros. will be mostly satisfied. Hoping it can get close to ¥150 million though, which would make the battle for #1 this weekend even more interesting.

Raya and the Last Dragon is going to struggle to debut in the Top 10. The bottom of the top 10 is really contested this weekend, so it can still make it, but the fact that it may just barely make it there, much less miss entirely, is horrendous. This is definitely one of the biggest bombs that I can recall. Disney animated features have been easy money for almost a decade now (and Pixar for 20+ years), with Japan very often being their best international markets, or at least one of them, so to see this fall so far is sad.

Hopefully Disney rethinks their strategy with Disney+ in the market for future releases, because Toho Cinemas (as well as Movix Cinemas) sent them a pretty big message this weekend by not showing Raya. Of course, the decision to not show the film might have more to do with Disney possibly requesting a higher share of revenue than normal. Either way, if it's one or both reasons, rethink this for future releases, please. Disney+ makes them so much money though, I wouldn't expect a sudden change.

¥x60.0 million ($0.5 million), -10%, ¥28.85 billion ($237.4 million) - Spirited Away (2001) *est.*

Note: Spirited Away is estimated in Weeks 23-24. Annoyingly no weekend figures are available from Weeks 23-31. It fell outside the top 10 in its 25th week, but resurfaced again in its 32nd week following its Oscar win, and remained there through its 37th week. I estimated its 23rd and 24th weeks based on its weekend ranking (which is available) and any known grosses of the films in the top 10 at that time.

Note 2: Tracking ended for Howl's Moving Castle in its 23rd weekend and for Frozen and Bohemian Rhapsody in their 24th weekends, respectively. Howl would, months later, receive an expansion around June 2005, I believe, to help get it to its final total of ¥19.6 billion. And Bohemian Rhapsody would continue to play in limited released for many, many more months to reach ¥13.11 billion.

If DS returns to #1 its pretty much as impressive as Your Name and would easily lock itself in nomination of the best run in the market as well.

So Raya could be achieving the worst opening weekend for a Disney animated film since the Disney Renaissance, or perhaps in whole history?
Last year both The Addams Family and Trolls World Tour opened over ¥40 million....

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (03/06-07)
The busiest chain (Toho) and the third busiest (Movix) aren't playing it. And there are still 10-20 or so more theaters somewhere else that typically show a big Disney release that aren't playing it either, likely a smaller chain (or two) and then a couple independent locations perhaps. Clearly, they weren't happy with Disney... to say the least.

I don't know the opening weekends for the 90s Disney films, but I have a very hard time believing any of them opened with less than what Raya is going to do this weekend given their totals. Data doesn't exist, but you'd definitely have to go way back to the 60s/70s I'd imagine.

But do note that without Toho and Movix, it's difficult to predict. It's lost up to 50% of its business by simply not playing at them, and then factor in how much releasing on Disney+ on the same-day has taken away, we can predict it's going to be a absolute bomb. Easily one of the biggest ever, and depending on where it comes in, I think you can argue it as being the biggest bomb on record.

And besides greed, I don't know why they'd release it on Disney+ in Japan on the same-day, or (based on rumors) request a higher than normal share of the profit in a market that isn't reliant on them. The market has largely been back to normal for over 6 months now (even up to 9 months), and Japan is almost always their best international market (second/third at worse) at the box office for their non-Marvel releases.

Watch two movies today. Violet Evergarden is so emotionally heavyweight it makes Raya looks like a lightweight.
