Biggest Nineteenth Weekends (2000-) ¥255.0 million ($2.2 million), +31%, ¥27.84 billion ($229.1 million) - Spirited Away (2001) ¥230.3 million ($2.0 million), +20%, ¥21.93 billion ($209.7 million) - Your Name. (2016) ¥150.0 million ($1.4 million), +24%, ¥37.70 billion ($361.7 million) - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020) *Prediction* ¥x77.0 million ($0.7 million), -39%, ¥25.06 billion ($245.9 million) - Frozen (2014) ¥x52.8 million ($0.5 million), -33%, ¥12.50 billion ($112.1 million) - Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) ¥x52.2 million ($0.5 million), -10%, ¥18.67 billion ($181.5 million) - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
Biggest Twentieth Weekends (2000-) ¥242.6 million ($2.1 million), +05%, ¥22.80 billion ($217.2 million) - Your Name. (2016) ¥150.0 million ($1.3 million), -40%, ¥28.18 billion ($231.8 million) - Spirited Away (2001) ¥x64.7 million ($0.6 million), +24%, ¥18.86 billion ($183.4 million) - Howl's Moving Castle (2004) ¥x42.7 million ($0.4 million), -19%, ¥12.63 billion ($113.3 million) - Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) ¥x38.8 million ($0.4 million), -50%, ¥25.21 billion ($247.6 million) - Frozen (2014)
Note: Spirited Away (except for its Week 16 and 20 totals) is rounded and estimated from Week 15 on.
Didn't have time to put together a Weekend Forecast again this weekend, but here is Demon Slayer's projected 19th weekend based on Saturday's results.
Next week I'll add Biggest 21st-24th Weekends. Your Name. holds all these records with Spirited Away in a distant second, and anything else that may make it on being far and away below them. But Demon Slayer will probably be in contention with Spirited Away, probably even surpassing it, beginning with these weekends.
And note that Demon Slayer has continuously remained around ¥10 billion ahead of Spirted Away over the past month or two (thanks to much stronger weekdays), and since it'll likely catch it on the weekends very soon, it strongly suggests it'll finish above ¥40 billion.

Re: Japan Box-Office: New Mamoru Hosoda Film Trailer
Very good late run for Demon Slyaer!
How is the Covid situation in Japan? has it stabilized?
Perhaps in March the government could start softening the measures (as last year it took almost 2 months from the reopening to the 50% capacity, and 2 more for ~100%)

For a supposedly weak month the hold are pretty good across the board.

Re: Japan Box-Office: New Mamoru Hosoda Film Trailer
Well, the box office has been abnormally strong in terms of holds since early/mid-January. The weekends have been great, but the weekdays in particular have been stellar for the last five/six-weeks. Which is made even more unusual since the strong holds also began around the time that restrictions were put back in place. It'll be interesting to watch the holds when, presumably, the restrictions are lifted in a couple of weeks.
As for the COVID situation, cases have dropped a lot following the restrictions from last month. There'll be an occasional day that Tokyo has nearly 500 cases (and the country ~2,000), but they've been averaging more in the 300 range in Tokyo (and 1,000-1,500 for the country).

Re: Japan Box-Office: New Mamoru Hosoda Film Trailer
DS finally sees an increase and this weekend is better than not only 18th weekend but even 17th weekend. I thought the anime announcement will give it the increase but this is also good.

Re: Japan Box-Office: New Mamoru Hosoda Film Trailer
Yeah. The weekday before a weekday holiday receives a bit of a bump. Demon Slayer's increase today is the highest, but many others enjoyed increases, too. Increases will be quite massive tomorrow (several hundred percent across the board).
Feb. 23rd is Emperor's Birthday. Only the second year of Naruhito's reign, so it's a recent holiday. The birthday of the current Emperor is a national holiday. Dec. 23rd was the previous Emperor's Birthday from 1989-2018 until Akihito abdicated in 2019.

As for Demon Slayer above, all the estimated days from this past week will be largely unchanged since its reported total as of Sunday was nearly identical to the estimated total through Sunday.

Is the ultimate goal ¥40B still on the table?

Re: Japan Box-Office: New Mamoru Hosoda Film Trailer
Yeah, it's most likely going to finish above ¥40 billion. It's still ~¥10 billion ahead of Spirited Away, and will very likely outpace it on a week-to-week basis starting this week, so I don't think it'll ever lose that margin (may in fact gradually increase it). It's been beating Spirited Away over the weekdays for a very long time (and vast majority of its run), but it'll soon overtake it on the weekends as well.
Also, just to put ¥40 billion+ (and grossing ~¥10 billion or more than the previous #1 film) into perspective, it's sort of similar to a film in the U.S. earning $400/500 million more than the previous #1 film, so it'd be kind of like The Force Awakens grossing $1.2/$1.3 billion or something in the states when it beat Avatar.
Demon Slayer didn't simply become the highest grossing film in Japan (and most attended ever by perhaps 5 million admissions before it's done). It did so with a totally dominating performance.

I'd expect something roughly double Monday's result and comparable to Sunday.

Re: Japan Box-Office: New Mamoru Hosoda Film Trailer
So around $364M-$365M by Sunday, then if it follows the Spirited Away's run we could see a final above $380M. But if I am not mistaken there is still the golden week soon and the summer holidays at the very end which could still help to bring back maybe even a little more. The last remaining goal will be the 29 million admissions and ¥ 40Bn since the $400M and 30 million admissions will be almost impossible at this stage. Am I right @Corpse ?

Re: Japan Box-Office: New Mamoru Hosoda Film Trailer
I wouldn't say anything is impossible. Roughly ¥42 billion is needed for $400 million, and while it would definitely take a very long time (probably fully into the summer months) to get there, nothing is indicating it won't keep holding like this for weeks/months to come. The home video release is really the only thing that I see determining its eventual finish.
The home video release is going to be gargantuan. They're going to have to time it well. They won't pull a Disney and release it on video prematurely, but I do wonder if they're hoping on a May 10th release since that's after Golden Week, so it'll take advantage of that, but more importantly, it's Rengoku's birth date. But they're unlikely to release it on home video if it's still doing fair numbers come that time.
It's going to obliterate the first week sales record for a Blu-ray/DVD of 1.5 million set by Frozen. Will not be shocked if it can sell 2/2.5 million+ copies in its first week if they can produce enough copies for the first week.

And I'll have Weekend Actuals posted later tonight, or worse-case tomorrow afternoon. Yet another set back today in trying to skunk-proof my porch/house.

Today, Yahoo Japan announces that in order to qualify for the Oscar, Mugen Train will be released exclusively in Miami for 7 days, beginning on Feb 26th. The public release has not been decided yet. It seems that the door already closes for KNY to be nominated in the final round

Re: Japan Box-Office: New Mamoru Hosoda Film Trailer
It's really hard for a movie sequel to an anime to get nominated and without the background of these characters Mugen Train as a standalone movie does not work. There was no chance for it to get nominated in animated category but maybe some visual effects, song or an odd ball nomination to recognize the movie's impact on Japan BO is its best shot, yet I highly doubt that will happen as well.

Re: Japan Box-Office: New Mamoru Hosoda Film Trailer
Demon Slayer was never a contender to be nominated to the Oscars, unfortunatelly. It got a nomination in the Satellite Awards by the International Press Academy, and perhaps also gets nominated to the Annie Awards for Independent animated feature.
I don't even know if Demon Slayer runs favourite in the Japan Academy film Prize, considering the only movie sequel to an anime to win was Stand by me Doraemon.

Re: Japan Box-Office: New Mamoru Hosoda Film Trailer
I don't care about where it will be nominated or not. What I care now is whether it will be nationwide released in the USA or not? instead of just 7 days limited release in Miami, Florida...???

Re: Japan Box-Office: New Mamoru Hosoda Film Trailer
Given that domestic movies itself aren't getting released in US the chances of DS:MT getting a wide release there are very thin because it might end up losing more money in prints than it makes at BO.

From the last Funimation films released in the US, "My hero academia" films and "Dragon Ball Super:Broly" were quite big and wide, over 1.000 theaters, and performed very good. But any other of their released films were quite disappointing. Even "Your Name." and "One Piece: Stampede" didn't performed well. Even if it gets a nationwide release, we just dont know yet how people will return to the theaters...
